I agree - however, we DO have dieshots of both PP cores and they look nigh identical in size (and many parts of the layout such as the L1 cache). So the milion $ question is, given that PPE has 4x smaller VMX register banks and simpler VMX execution units from the PPX, what is that space used for?

I don't think there's an extra VMX either - but I would think something is using that space.
 
Peter Hofstee has confirmed on the ibm forum that Cell DOES use the DD2 version of the PPE. What that verson contains though is a mystery to everyone that is not under NDA...

Well the die increased in Size. And compared to the Xenon Core the part where the VMX Exec. unit is is double the size (symmetrically) on the CELL PPE and looks absolutely identical. So there'S not much left ...
