CryENGINE 3

It would seem that the first wave of comments didn't have the proper context to interpret what people saw. They were simply criticizing it based on the visual elements. Happens when people jump the gun.

I'm not sure why these latest videos are garnering such praise when theyre showing essentially the same thing as prior videos that were highly criticized here? Dont get it.

This new footage looks less impressive to me than old stuff, if anything. Which I always thought were among the best graphics on console, dont get me wrong.
I think what they're showing now is much better in terms of visual quality. Plus, its impressive to see the tools at work.

@Rangers, combination of small improvements to the demo and offscreen video looking more impressive than the GDC capture. BTW they seemed to have fixed the shadow update speed in this build of the demo.

Engine looks good enough for a decent Crysis port.

Not really, the area that is shown (from Crysis 1) is not even close to the slowest (fps wise) area in the game and do you see that across the bay the land has nothing on it? If that is because of a LOD setting... just think of what the big inland levels will look like! (like the tank one), the pop up will drive people insane.

What's interesting is that how the PS3 version of engine is completely tear free (v-synced) while it's constantly tearing in the 360 (presumably triple buffer being used in the PS3 version) Also he mentioned how physics rendering (ie. soft cloth physics) would be identical between the PC & PS3 while not mentioning the 360. I was particularly impressed with the cloth physics as it's something that you'd only see in PC games with physics engine accelerator.

Dont you guys find funny that history its repeating itself?

One time you have the id guys revealing its next tech and vision. Then the Crytek guys deliver a similar technology and earlier time. I.E:

Doom 3 its revealed first, heavy emphasis on Normal Maps. Farcry is realesed first with what Crytek called "Polybump".

Rage is revealed first, easy and transparent multi platform development. Cryengine 3, centering in simple cross platform development already shipping to devs. (if we take the press release as true). :)

I dunno I think the whole Stencil Shadows was much more hyped in Doom 3 than the normal maps.

Some things are going to happen in parallel regardless due to new hardware being able to do things that were previously too difficult.

Regards,
SB

It was nice however CE/CE2/CE3 uses PC/console CPU for physics (soft body physics in this regard) and unless the clothing is interactible and can tear apart then it really aint close to 'PC games with physics engine accelerator'.

After watching that GC demo I must say I'm extremely impressed especially for it running on a PS3. However since it's a tech demo, I wonder how would a real game environment with AI and all stack up. The last scene with the Fantasy theme is really putting me in doubt since it's pretty much maxing out the console, can we really realistically expect a game level of that visuals?

Why everybody are so surprised that engine is doing well on PS3? Is this console flawed or something??No to mention that some of the most complex and graphically advanced titles this generation are available exclusively on PS3...

No one is doubting its power but the beauty lies in how one can harness those power from its obscured architecture and produce something like this demo. No small feat to say the least especially for a multiplatform engine which usually suffers on the system.

Didnt the demo had AI in it ? I saw 2 guys shooting at the player, not much but atleast thats some kind of AI

I wonder if Crytek has made a concerted effort to make the PS3 version dance due to the Unreal engine still prefering 360 and offering substandard ports to PS3 (although it's getting better - Maybe this has something to do with CliffyBs PS3 exclusive game they announced a while back?)

With an engine that offers levels of graphics we've seen in PS3 exclusives and comparible graphics on 360 they will surely steal sales from Epic.

I don't know what Cryteks goals are but I hope it's as flexible as the unreal engine and not just an optimised FPS engine as that would be a tremendous shame for me.

I dunno... from what I've heard the Unreal engine isn't inherently all that flexible :???:

As an end user I wouldn't know about that, I can just judge on the variety of the games using it I suppose.

Seems to be able to cover a number of genre's.

Yeah that is what I was thinking.

They kind of missed the boat this generation. They could have been a major contender for most used middleware engine this gen if they put some focus into making Cryengine2 work on consoles. I think they now understand what they must do and have even said that they feel it is important to find out what will be in the PS4 now in order to get a leg up on someone like Epic who beat almost everyone to the punch this generation and were rewarded for it.

If Cryengine 3 could be used to make racers, and games like Lost Odyssey then it has my vote.
