Console pricing thread

8-10m world wide from sept - january yes. I think they can. In the USA alone they can do 4-5m I believe.

that is indeed an aggressive target. i suppose they are expecting a large uptick in sales because of key software releases.

Highly doubtful. 8-10 million for sept to jan would be Wii like number with an average of 2 to 2.5 million console sold at month worldwide and 1 to 1.25 in the US.

I think with the price drop you will see a large jump in sales world wide. Look at whats happening in japan. There is demand for the system still .

8-10m is doable.

Not only that but the 360 provides a revenue stream that the PS2 didn't.

I fully expect MS to dump consoles on the market as quickly as they can in order to get as many people as possible to subscribe to Live! and start purchasing movies and TV shows and other content in addition to games.

The PS2->PS3 model simply isn't one that can used as a parallel.

Live movie download service has been tabbed by MS as ancillary.

It's not ever going to be a driving force, just a secondary value add.

MS goal is not to sell people lots of 360's to get the movie service into people homes. That is secondary.

Even Itunes profits are dwarfed for Apple by Ipod hardware profits.

MS already has the tools to offer movies , music (zune store intergration ?) and games through live. I think all those are a good reason for ms to get systems into peoples hands.

europe is getting the bundles also

The titles kinda suck , but with the elite and pro they are two big movies from the summer and are kid friendly. The price is the same as without them so its not bad for someone who also wants their kids to play the system. For most of us it wont really add much value though

Sony urged to drop PS3 price before Christmas

The high price of the PlayStation 3 could drive a considerable amount potential consumers towards the cheaper alternative this Christmas – Microsoft's Xbox 360.

That's according to EDAAR analyst Jesse Divnich, who believes the PS3 is "too steep" in price for the mainstream market, and urged Sony to cut the price before the key retail period.

"We still urge Sony to consider a possible hardware price cut this holiday season," wrote Divnich.

"We should note that if Microsoft’s first-party titles perform significantly better in quality and popularity than Sony’s this holiday season, we could begin to see a considerable amount of potential PS3 owners, who may be waiting for a PS3 price cut, to choose the Xbox 360 over the PS3."

...

Sony has maintained it will not be cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 before Christmas, with SCEE's David Reeves stating in August, "There is no price cut. We're not going to drop the price this year."

The titles are clearly aimed at parents going holiday shopping

Cheers

Pretty much. The hardcore 360 audience is getting saturated, time to tap in to the next slot. Well executed IMO, though the Wii will remain a tough competitor in that market.

I wonder if Sony will bundle more hardcore titles as it will maintain the PS3s hardcore price point. We already know they will have an Uncharted bundle for the 160 GB unit in the US which is pretty hardcore. In Europe we will get a LittleBigPlanet bundle which has more of a parent friendly appearance. Anyway I doubt those are the only bundles we will see.

Ive been waiting for the price drop (check), a bundle (check), and now jasper (not check) before I repurchase another 360.

Hopefully the Jasper's get confirmed before Gears 2 as I will need to buy it either way before then.

You know the new 60 gigs have a diffrent setup . Mine is very cool and runs very quietly. Installing to the hardrive will make it almost silent. You don't need to wait on jasper anymore. Do a search for xbox 360 failure rates on neogaf. The post falcon systems are rock solid and don't even have a handfull of problems on gaf.

Seems like a rather muted announcement. How close was XB360 to the 6 million mark before the drop? I haven't seen any reports of XB360 Cores selling gangbusters in the likes of GI.biz, which normally quotes some store or other when sales have a big upturn.
I don't have the feeling that the 149 euro arcade , 199 euro pro or 249 euro elite has sold a lot more 360 consoles here in Belgium. It was kinda lonely yesterday (like always) in the 360 section of mediamarkt.

Here they don't care a lot for Microsoft and the same is to be said for Microsoft. It's now 3 years that there are problems with the language setting. Microsoft thinks we all speak French, while the most of Belgian speaks Dutch. Spend some points online for an xbox game and you will get the french version. Call support and you get the answer that they know that there is something wrong with the language, but that they aren't planning to do something about it and you will get your points reimbursed. In a country where language tensions exists it certainly gives Microsoft a good image.

Looking at my own environment it seems that a lot of new 360 where sold to people already having a 360 console. It's a good time (because of the temporarily price drop) to replace your early RROD prone version for those where RROD's are less likely. I even was tempted to do the same. But with the bad economic times I'm a lot more reluctant to do such actions.

Time for a 'will Sony drop the PS3 price this year' poll? ;)

Apparently not.

Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai has reiterated Sony's commitment to the current set of PlayStation 3 price points for the rest of this year, insisting that the platform is a "very good value proposition".

"The answer is yes, if you're asking, 'Are these the prices we're going with this Christmas?'" he told the FT.

Speaking from a UK perspective, I think Sony are deluded if they think their current price point is a good one to be at this Christmas. In the current economic climate, with shares tanking, food, fuel and mortgages getting more expensive and unemployment on the rise, luxury items are one of the first things that are going to get cut. And a games console is certainly a luxury item.

If I go to Gamestation here in the UK I can get a brand new 60GB XBox with Halo 3 and Mass Effect for £169. A similar deal with the 80GB PS3 costs £339 (albeit with 10,000BC thrown in on blu-ray). That's twice as expensive.

I think they're counting on their big releases making the price difference immaterial to buyers. But if MS get their marketing right this Christmas (and I can't say I'm a fan of their latest TV ads here) Sony could be in trouble.

Microsoft are throwing a lot of commercials our way here, I don't think too many will have missed at least knowing about the price-cut ...

http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/16/xbox-360-holiday-bundle-prices-slashed-with-dell-coupon-magic/

The dell coupon knocks the aracde down to $169 with a sonic game and the memory card plus the 5 xbla games. You can then get the hardrive for $30 bucks with 3 months live. Good option for anyone who wants in.
The 60 gig at $250 might be the best dell deal though.

This is just what I have been waiting for...SOLD! I wasn't going to replace my 360 until it got to 199. Now I can get a 20gb for 199. Even better!
