Console pricing thread

Re-instated. Hopefully folks can stick to what the companies are doing with console pricing and strategies. It may be difficult, but it means you're putting even more thought into it. :D

Well, FWIW: The Arcade X-Mas bundle just went on sale here (with the largest DIXONS-owned electronics chains offering preorders and promising lots of supply) for NOK 979,- ($115+VAT at current rates).

Damned hard to resist for holiday shoppers, I'd guess, and also a definite answer to why the harddrive-less 360 was around to begin with...

Think that SCE is doing the right thing by not reducing the PS3 price this season.

Now that Sony has amassed a solid amount of exclusives, probably its best line up in years, it will be silly to not take the risk and reap the potential benefits. Plus even with a cut now, they wont be able to match MS price levels anyway. Save that price cut for the time when the cows start to get thin :) or things start to slow down.

Still there wont be any doubts that valuable lessons will be learned when this season reach its end.

I expect the HD DVD player to give way some day. It is a dead end anyway (If his wife allowed a HD DVD player, she may not mind a Blu-ray player replacement in the future).

Everything gives way at some point. I have a 8 year old dvd player already. That dvd player has gotten many more plays than my hd dvd player and so it should last much longer. heck my father still has his first vcr and it still works

Sure, but there are no new movies for HD DVD anymore. It's a dead end *if* NacNucST3 is really interested in Blu-ray content (not just upscaling DVD). There will be newer Blu-ray promotion along the way, so I wouldn't worry about getting Blu-ray now if he's not ready.

I meant pick up the 4 BRDs and sell the 4 BRDs to get some money if not the $100 worth ;)

That would work well economically but I fear his wife may be complaining about the excessive geek factor in the room (like my wife does !). It may be possible to convince her via economics though, but it's a chore.

I think you missed the PS3 offer. It was included in the promotion earlier on. Fear not, I am sure there will be more PS3 deals this fall.

Yes but is it worth investing in another niche format that may or may not be around in 2 years.

Thats one of the reasons I haven't bought many bluray movies. I just simply don't know if it will be around for very long

Since NacNucST3 already has a PS3 and bought HD DVD + Blu-ray movies, I believe he is in the early adopter segment. You bought Blu-ray movies too, the same label applies to you.

It's too early to tell whether Blu-ray is niche. Based on their channels today, it looks like a mass market play. They have been targeting the enthusiasts, but are moving to address a wider audience starting this fall.

I don't think you need to worry about Blu-ray 2 years later. Just look at UMD movies, it's still around after more than three years. At this moment, Blu-ray is doing rather well.

[Why are we talking about Blu-ray future in console pricing though]

One can only hope the storage upgrade site continues at least through January, it may or may not cannibalize Pro sales but with deals like the Dell deal MSFT can shift some serious units this holiday.

Rumor is a $100 xbox arcade unit / $200 pro unit if you sign up for the microcenter arcade unit this dec . If thats true that can shift a few units at those stores.

Microsoft has unexpectedly cut the price of its 360 console configurations in Australia for the second time in half a year.

The Elite and Pro editions of the console have experienced the biggest price reductions, dropping AU$100 each with the Elite now retailing at AU$549 and the Pro going for $499. The Arcde version has taken a further cut too, dropping from AU$350 to AU$300.

Microsoft says that the Xbox 360 Arcade continues to be the best-selling console in the region.

Speaking of Blu-Ray, DeepDiscountDVD has a 25% sale off going through 11/23. Enter DVDTALK as the coupon code. Does not apply to preorders like Dark Knight.

I've never bought more than one console a generation, even when the PSX I had was breaking down.

If they came out with a PS3 slim at under $300, I would be tempted to add to my 60 GB.
