Business Approach Comparison Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox

Yes Shifty, and that´s one of the reasons for the lack of appeal here in Europe of "live tv" on XOne, How It´s supposed to work? Where the majority has the tuner on the telly?

Why would it be different? Whether it's over-the-air TV or STB, Xbox, for the most part, needs to use an IR blaster.

Well, as far as i know, you won´t be able to use the hdmi in, no voice control, no xbox overlay, no seamless change between tv/games/apps using just the console. If i´m not missing something.

I was referring to a digital tuner embedded on the telly for OTA, yes you could use the HDMI in for a STB be it satellite or cable tv, but the penetration here is far far lower than USA.

Or you could just hook your 360

Although true in part, you could still use voice control without on screen using the internal tuner. Say "Xbox BBC Four" and it'll blast the room with the channel number, I guess, and make the change. That's easier for folk than having to either memorise the channel numbers or search through the guide.

You are right about "no overlay" part. Voice controls should work,
Regular controller should also work, I expect full TV browse mode on Xbox input, and at least channel/volume up/down and "back to Xbox" otherwise.

Nice, i didn´t know it, i hope it works on Day one (not counting on my country though)

On a side note, after the announcement of the Vita TV (PS4 extender, Gaikkai receiver, etc)

Will Ms give the greenlight to the Xbox TV? Was it called stingray or something like that?

And couldn't the channel switch be done via HDMI CEC too?
Yes and example RaspberryPi XBMC client uses LibCEC to send cec commands . I can use BraviaTV remote controller arrow keys to browse xbmc interface back and fort. Or AV amplifier controller to change tv channels, mute, volume changes etc.. I do not know much about how DVR(analog, dvb) tuner boxes provide cec actions, I bet results varies a lot between manufacturers.

Its even old rusty PS3 supports cec codes of some sort. LibCEC command line tool is available for homemade shell scripts as well. Sony could provide relatively similar "Simon Says And Waves" magic through PSEye and/or headset mic. Not that I expect them to push much development efforts on that part.

It was just stalled not canned -allegedly- correct?

I really don´t know, prior to the reveal and to some extent the E3 there were rumours and leaks all over the place.

What we don´t know is what was supposed to be:

-A Roku/apple TV device
-An Xbox extender with gaming capabilities
-Backwards compat module (driveless)
-Just the X1 system partition

At this point, we now for sure that they were mixing features of the new 360 model.

If I remember correctly Paul Thurrot told that it was put on hold (even for good), but with the recent news from Sony, i´m not so sure anymore...

I'm a cord cutter, but I'm planning on something like this for OTA broadcasts...

I would get the use of the overlay. Plus it has a rudimentary DVR so I can record live TV too.

Yeah, the rumor was that it wasn't canned just on hold...

Personally I hope to see Microsoft release a TV type device at the $99 or less price. Would be great way to remotely access Xbox games/content in other rooms in the house. Although if they're planning on dropping the price of the Xbox 360 E to $150(currently at $180), then a non-360 device at $99 might be a bit hard to sell. Maybe that's why pushed it back? Nice to see Sony release the Vita TV device. Should put some pressure on Microsoft to do something.

Sony jumped the shark.

Vita TV is their "32X" moment.

Sony went too far trying to attach the fail stink of Vita to the pre-launch hype of PS4.

IMO Sony jumped the shark with a cboat a long time ago. Just before the PS3 launch. They can't seem to make money any more and unlike MS they can't really afford to lose any more money in the console business. This is it for them. They have to make money or exit the market IMO.

I'd be much more worried about MS xbox division:

Microsoft Investor Wants To Fire Ballmer And Sell Xbox Division

Things could get interesting in the coming weeks. ValueAct must notify Microsoft of a proxy fight by Aug. 30 – next Friday – and there is an analyst meeting at Microsoft on Sept. 19.

ValueAct will likely call on Microsoft to make some big changes. Sherlund – who is likely well-sourced on this – believes ValueAct will suggest Microsoft sell off Xbox to another tech company.

“Xbox is cool,” Sherlund wrote, “but by our estimates Microsoft has not made money at this.”
That was only few weeks ago... what just happened with Ballmer?

ValueAct now sits on the board at MS.

and they still wetn out and bought a devices company that will continue to make devices , they will still be launching surface 2 , xbox one and dozens of other hardware products. Thy are also looking at buying Blackberry

ValueAct has the least power on the board I wouldn't actually worry about them changing anything. Balmer is out but that's about it and it was in motion from last year.
