blu-ray = 2x?

I guess this means PS3 drives will be quieter than normal DVD drives 'coz it spins slower. Thinking of the slimline PS2s, though they have no fan they're far from silent. You can hear the disk motors chugging away. It'd be nice if slimline PS3 would be quieter.

No, he didn't. The article is referencing the E3 presentation, and no disc speed was mentioned then. The writer may be confusing this with the fact that Blu-ray offers ~6x the capacity of DVD.

If we're real lucky, we might just find out the drive speed in the next couple of days, at CES. If Blu-ray is going to be the focus, and PS3 is to be shown at all, it might make sense for them to confirm its Blu-ray functionality and maybe even demo it. My guess is it has to be 2x..I've yet to even see an inkling about 4x Blu-ray drives.

Not that this in any way confirms or denies anything, but Panasonic's 4x chipset is entering mass production this month.

i have a new question. Will the speed of the blu-ray drive set an upper limit for DVD speeds?

So if the PS3 has a 2x blu-ray drive, will this prevent 12x or 16x DVD speeds?

Yes and, no. The same motor is used but, it will most likely be down to the drive controller to decide speeds based on medium. As I understand the situation BR has a higher wavelenth laser relative to DVD so, though BR speed is slower to read more accurately DVD speed could be ramped up. This all depends on the control chip though.

Must have 2+ operating voltage points for motor but this is standard technology, nothing new.
