blu-ray = 2x?

I have a question about the speed of blu-ray in ps3. Everyone keeps saying that it'll most likely be 2x speed.

So if we have 16x DVD drives and the biggest difference between DVD and blu-ray is the laser, then why is a 6x blu-ray drive not possible at this point.

It just seems like blu-ray is more of an evolution of DVD rather then a completly new technology and should be able to borrow some of the speed advancements.

Please explain? i don't know enough about the technologies and would like to know, thanks.

P.S. i'm just sick of load times and maybe it's just wishful thinking that Sony will give us a 6x drive. But of course, it probably won't happen.

The blue laser is much smaller than red so I'd think that the problem will be keeping the laser on target as you ramp up the spindle speed.

And be thankful that it's not gonna be 6X or faster. This will help to make PS3 much quieter than X360.

Dude

The noise from the 360 is mostly due to the cooling fans. When youre playing a movie DVD, its very quiet.

Not commenting about the X360 per se but I believe the noisiest time of a the drive is when the drive is seeking which movie watching doesn't cause much of (compared to playing a game).

I don't think there has been even a hint from sony of what the speed of the ps2 drive is going to be.

It's generally assumed that it will be 2x because simply because would keep the costs down on an already very expensive drive.

A 2x BR drive will be slower than than a 12x DVD drive - but not by as much as you would think.

Don't the Dev Kits have 2x Blu-ray drives in them? Or is it 1x?

If the dev kits have shipped with blu-ray drives, then that means they've shipped with the RSX as well; and thus far we have no confirmation of either of those.

But isn't there a slide that shows what speed drive dev kits will have?

I think the slide said 1x drive, but I'm not sure, but are they even in the dev kit yet I think I remember someone saying they weren't

I don't think it can have anything less than 2x speed, simce you need atleast 1.5 to play a movie, unless Sony dies not want the PS3 to be used for playing BR movies, who knows...

streaming the content off the disk isn't as much as a problem as are the seeks when acounting for long loading times. Regardless what speed the Blu-Ray drive happens to have, there will be games with long loading times and other with short regardless. Also, if you do a search, I'm sure you'll find many many many threads and the answers to your questions. ;)

Sure you're not confusing the drive speed with the higher bandwidth movies can use? A 1x blu-ray drive can act as a 1.5x drive with movie content, IIRC.

You are probably right, I don't know so much about the BRD drives, only that people use that argument as to why Sony will minimum have a 2x drive...

Copied from Blu-Ray.com
According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x speed is defined as 36Mbps. However, as BD-ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data transfer rate the minimum speed we're expecting to see is 2x (72Mbps).

Isn't that logical? How could 1x act as '1.5x' ?
1.5x is what you would require in a perfect world, but IRL you never reach the absolute peak of the speed, so you would need to have a bit more than 1.5x IRL, say 2x - if not even more.

Just to confirm what Titanio said, this is from an interview with the Sonopress VP for Technology and Development:

BIZ: What are the likely Blu-ray player speeds at launch, knowing that movie playback is 1.5x of "reference velocity"? What speed would a 2x Blu-ray
drive transfer data at? 72Mbs or 108Mbs?

PS: 108 Mbs.

Whether the PS3 will use the 54/1x scheme or 36/1x for games remains to be seen. Technically it should follow the 36Mbps/1x format since that is what the BD-ROM discs are rated at for non-movie applications. Things could get confusing when the actual drive speed is announced.

The only thing that is known for certain is that it will be atleast a 1.5x drive, as that is the MIN speed needed for Blu-Ray movie playback

It's a 2X drive. If not it's faster. Minimum is 2X and most likely the final spec. But it all depends on the release date, and it looks like PS3 will be a bit late, which could mean faster drive.
