auzentech x-fi prelude

Don't these things also lack the same level of EAX support as official X-Fi's? :???:

*edit* Guess not. Could've sworn it was these... Or was there some other soundcard based on the X-Fi that didn't fully support EAX?

Now THIS could be a interesting card. I'll be looking closely for some peoples experiences, etc. I'm glad to see Creative finally allow a third party to use their chips, I think it could be a good thing for Creative. Expand their market, I think it could help bring sound cards a bit more to the forefront. If each sound card has the same basic gaming features, but then the third parties can add their own additional features... that would rock.

I totally agree. I believe it was a huge mistake for Creative to buy out the competition (both on the hardware and software/algorithm side) back then when their strategy seemed targeted at becoming a monopoly player. Instead of facing the challenge of expanding their market through competitive innovation, they ended up as the sole proprietor of a declining niche.

Your probably thinking of the X-Fi XtremeAudio which is a Audigy SE based board (ie software CPU processing).

I was sure it was from Auzentech... I remember reading up on it about 5 months ago :???:

there definatly was a creative xfi card that didnt support all the featurs in hardware

Edit:
yep it was the x-fi extremeaudio

"The new, ultra-low end card is the X-Fi XtremeAudio. However, this isn't really an X-Fi card, so we can't really recommend it for PC gaming. It actually uses a different, low-cost DSP, and some of the X-Fi functionality is actually handled in software."

Argh! No!

It was definitely not an X-Fi. I remember it being a competing card that everyone was praising regardless of the fact that it didn't support the same levels of EAX and such that the official X-Fi did...and it was in a thread about Auzentech cards so i'm certain it was an Auzentech card :p

Have these things always supported the same level of features as the official X-Fi's?

Nope, outside of the Prelude, none of them do.

Any news of Auzentech writing x-fi drivers from scratch? That'd be nice.

Does Sapphire write Radeon drivers from scratch? Neither does Auzentech.

There's always a first time for everything..... :D

The drivers are a Creative and Auzentech collaboration. Auzentech has spent considerable time with Creative working on drivers and I've heard nothing but positive comments.

Yes it will be compatible with Vista, the reason why Auzentech shifted to Creative is that C-Media will never have properly functioning Vista drivers.

DD Live/DTS Connect/DTS NEO are all supported in hardware but can't be activated until licensing paperwork has been completed.

Yeah I read that from NCIX, they don't know what they are talking about. C-Media chips function just fine in Vista, and the reason Auzentech shifted to Creative is EAX HD and hardware acceleration support. In addition Auzentech has no engineers to write drivers (they've never had, even when they used C-Media chips). Drivers are solely done by Creative (even DDL and DTS:Interactive).

is that good or bad? :|

Neither really. I mean who would you rather write your 8800 Ultra drivers, Nvidia or BFG? Clearly BFG because Nvidia is made up of bunch of tools (I kid, I kid  ).

But seriously I own Vista x64 with the X-Fi (that's about as bad as it gets as far as drivers go), and outside of the 4GB issue, drivers are perfectly fine. I admit with Vista it takes extra tweaking (ALchemy and a few audio options in Vista) to get the same "audio experience" as XP, but it is definitely doable. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

Well I haven't used a 32bit operating system for about ~18 months now (used XP x64 before Vista x64), so I can't really comment on a direct 32bit vs 64bit comparison. I can say I play games at the same settings on Vista x64 that I did with XP x64 (although I do have an ATi card atm, not sure if Nvidia's Vista drivers are still under performing), and that in general, I do not have performance problems with Vista x64. I know that's not exactly what you wanted, but that's all I got.
