Another nVidia/GF FX concern?

chance favours the ready and well prepared ,and yes call it timing call it luck call it what you want ,but through out history this has happend ,nvidia was at the right place at the right time but they were also up to the job, 3dfx couldnt keep up ,and they offered the best deal at the time to get the xbox contract .ati delivered with their 9700 so was it luck for them that nvidia couldnt bring the fx to market on time ?ati were able to capitilize on this and take back a bit of ground lost through hard work and insight . you can argue that if nvidia released the fx on time it wouldve been different but there are a lot of ifs .

Ok guys, could we PLEASE keep it more civilized.

Being able to take advantage of opportunities when they come your way is a skill. You call it luck, I call it, recognizing an opportunity when you see it, and taking advantage of it.

Everyday there are opportunities out there. When someone starts a company and gets rich off such an opportunity, you say "they got lucky and were at the right place at the right time". I say, they saw something other people overlooked, and worked hard to get it.

It's the hallmark of entrepreneurism.
Yes completely. To make the good choices at the right time, is what makes a company to take the lead.

The point is, the management of Nvidia did quite a good job. For the futur, well, which firm will do likewise?

The problem is: it's not because you are at the right place at the right time that you take the opportunity to do it. Every firm has this situation, but few do the right thing. And the others, they get out of business or stay with low profile during some time.

Right now, i would say that Ati top management has made the right move, and Nvidia is trying to kick back (6-8 month late boy). It's not because a firm (Nvidia) has done the right move in past that they will always do it likewise, and conversely. 8)

Yes, ATI is making the right moves at the right time. They saw an opportunity to take the lead with DX9 and make some smart acquisitions (ArtX), and trying to do something very complex on .15um which are now paying off big time.

NVidia made a big bet this time (.13um, DDR2), which didn't pan out as well as they hoped. It may help them in the future that they went thru the .13um pain early, but it also made be the case that by the time late-adopter ATI goes .13um, all the "kinks" in the dev tools and process will have been worked out, so that going .13um for ATI will be alot early than Nvidia.

This time around, Nvidia being an aggressive "early adopter" of new technologies might have lost them some money and time.

As I understood it, one of the reasons NVidia got the XBox contract was due to the fact that they weren't just developing the NV25 graphics chip, but were also diversifying into the motherboard arena. This technology and the integrated sound in their Northbridge obviously made them much more attractive to MS than other IHVs as it ultimately meant 'less work' in organising the console as a whole i.e. instead of getting different graphics chips, Sound chips, main chipsets etc. from different companies they could get them all from one source.

Whether or not NVidia realised that their diversification into integrated chipsets would give them a good chance with the upcoming MS console is a matter for speculation, but I'd guess they had a fair idea and, all in all, it has worked for them very well. I don't think anybody can disagree that a $200m injection into the company to fund R&D which they were already planning to do was a great deal for them - possibly one of the reasons why MS are now trying to shaft them on the prices of the NV2A chips! Oddly enough, the one thing NVidia didn't gain, which you would have expected, was the opportunity to produce chipsets for Intel processors - probably because Intel wanted to keep the sales of their own chipsets high.

My view is that NVidia were lucky in many ways (i.e. the failures of their competitors) but, as the saying goes, you make your own luck and their willingness to diversify into the motherboard business paid great dividends. Only recently have ATI started making chipsets (although they have an Intel license) and there's no doubt that they are a long way behind NVidia in this area - perhaps they are also hoping to be in the running for XBox 2? If so, we can assume they will be looking to produce sound chips soon.

Again, I'm going to try to steer this thread back to where I wanted it to begin with.

no one has even brought up the cost of the finished cards to the manufacturer and just what kind of profit margin they may recieve. The reason I bring this up is I believe the whole GFFX debacle may have even more far reaching effect on the relationship between nVidia and it's customers than it's end users

Please try to stay on topic, which is the future, NOT THE PAST. And please be civil, guys..... maybe we should ask Dave to ban all users who's name begins with "D".........(j/k)
