AMD: R9xx Speculation

swaaye, you should test boards supporting TapaTalk (any vBulletin board for example works if the admins install free plugin), works great on at least my HTC Desire

But the fact that the Droid fits in my pocket is appealing and is making me consider the new 7" 1024x600 tablets. But again I don't think I could stand to type on a touch screen.

If you do, wait until one comes with an active digitizer in addition to capacitive touch. The handwriting (even script/cursive) recognition is fantastic. It can even correctly recognize my friend's handwriting and I have a hard time deciphering his handwriting. :D

On my convertable tablet, handwriting is my primary form of input (it has a full size keyboard that I rarely use), but weight is a huge drawback for convertables.

Oh and capacitive touch pens for use with capacitive touch screens are absolutely HORRIBLE for handwriting and inking. /shudder. I just got an 11.9" slate hoping to replace my 12.1" convertable tablet, but no go. Without an active digitizer there's just no way I can use it productively. Capacitive pen = horrible horrible horrible for writing. /sigh for the 15 USD wasted on a quality Boxwave stylus. It still works fantastic for casual windows use however. Media (1080p playback and output over HDMI), web browsing, games (I'm starting to like popcap style games now that I have a touchscreen slate :D).

I probably should have gotten the HP slate since it has an active digitizer, however it's too small for my needs. Oh and the Atom processor is entirely TOO slow for a lot of productivity tasks (complex PDF viewing for one) which is something else that I need to change. Luckily some Core i3, Sandybridge, and Fusion slates on the horizon with active digitizers. Sacrifice some battery life, but the increased performance will help for productivity.

The Fusion and Sandy Bridge slates have me interested. Those might be able to play something like Civ 5 on a slate which would be fantastic.

Oh and a 16:9 screen is absolutely horrible for a slate. Waaaaaay too narrow when in portrait view.

Regards,
SB

And to keep on topic...what are your thoughts on unlocking 2 SIMDs gains Cayman only 1-2% more performance...? Overclocking Cayman Pro to CCC limits net its more performance....btw Dave, please unleash CCC limits for Cayman Pro...

I'm waiting on the release of the ISA doc for Northern Islands.
I suppose the changes it would contain are already known, but perhaps there could still be some tidbits in there.

1GB 6970 to cost only $279....what the...$100 off the original Cayman XT? Is that even possible or AMD going kamikaze against GF114?? Early Barts and Caymans adopters have to be screwed....and the hell was all the renaming about....

Then again...Cayman shouldnt be too much more expensive to manufacture than Cypress....now that could be why the SIMD were not laser cut too....

The Catalyst Control Center includes an early prototype of some new tessellation controls. Our goal is to give users full control over the tessellation levels used in applications. The default selection “AMD Optimized” setting allows AMD, on a per application basis, to set the best level of tessellation. The intention is to help users get the maximum visual benefit of Tessellation, while minimizing the impact on performance. Currently no applications have been profiled, so the “AMD Optimized” setting will be non-operational until further notice.

The “Use Application Settings” option gives applications full control over the Tessellation level. Users can also manually set the maximum tessellation level used by applications with the slider control.

The long term goal for the “AMD Optimized” setting is to use the Catalyst Application Profile mechanism to control the AMD recommended level of tessellation on a per application basis. AMD’s intention is to set the tessellation level such that we will not be reducing image quality in any way that would negatively impact the gaming experience

I think the news is wrong , they meant HD 6950 , not HD 6970 ..

Just give us unlock Overdrive limit....too much profiling and optimization makes judging a card harder.... It is kinda crazy how GF114's impending launch... has threaten to shake up the gpu price/perf....the market became totally stagnate after the first few months of Cypress launch....I wonder will AMD have a 6970 OC version..the 1GB Caymans and GF114 looks to disrupt what AMD would like for higher tier cards..

Why do you write in endless "..." segments? :D You remind me of.....

The graphics card market is so flooded with options right now that it's almost impossible to make a decision and feel good about it. Every $30-40 increment has been filled it seems. It's crazyness.

And what are they going to do with the 6700 series? Is that going to be a new GPU? Where will they price it!? Or the 6600?!!??!?!?!!? :D :D :D

Well, the more options the better :). Generally, you do get a bit better performance for a bit more bucks, so this is a good thing.

HD67xx is recycled Juniper.
HD66xx is Caicos. This looks like Redwood with one more SIMD. Should be quite interesting, this is actually a chip with no direct nvidia equivalent (GF108 has no hope of catching even HD5670, yet alone a faster chip). I would suspect though AMD will keep TDP under 75W (no pcie connector) even for the fastest version which probably means similar clock to HD5670, hence it will be faster than that but with still quite a gap to HD67xx (unless there are some options there with more simds disabled / lower clock than HD5750).

I thought that was Turks?

Anyway, I'm not sure there will be much of a gap between the XT variant and a 5750. A 6850 (960SP@775MHz) nearly matches a 5850 (1440SP@725MHz). Assuming the same front-end advantages apply, performance differences should be similar, too.

At ~850 MHz core clock it would possibly even beat both the 5750 and GTS 450.

I wonder if the pretty colors I get with 4X EQAA in STALKER SoC are gone now? ;)

I hear talk of instability and I have had some weird periodic crashes with Mass Effect. But I was going to chalk that up to Mass Effect PC being a mess, judging by the 35 page thread that I found about the GPFs. :D
