But the fact that the Droid fits in my pocket is appealing and is making me consider the new 7" 1024x600 tablets. But again I don't think I could stand to type on a touch screen.
If you do, wait until one comes with an active digitizer in addition to capacitive touch. The handwriting (even script/cursive) recognition is fantastic. It can even correctly recognize my friend's handwriting and I have a hard time deciphering his handwriting.
On my convertable tablet, handwriting is my primary form of input (it has a full size keyboard that I rarely use), but weight is a huge drawback for convertables.
Oh and capacitive touch pens for use with capacitive touch screens are absolutely HORRIBLE for handwriting and inking. /shudder. I just got an 11.9" slate hoping to replace my 12.1" convertable tablet, but no go. Without an active digitizer there's just no way I can use it productively. Capacitive pen = horrible horrible horrible for writing. /sigh for the 15 USD wasted on a quality Boxwave stylus. It still works fantastic for casual windows use however. Media (1080p playback and output over HDMI), web browsing, games (I'm starting to like popcap style games now that I have a touchscreen slate
).
I probably should have gotten the HP slate since it has an active digitizer, however it's too small for my needs. Oh and the Atom processor is entirely TOO slow for a lot of productivity tasks (complex PDF viewing for one) which is something else that I need to change. Luckily some Core i3, Sandybridge, and Fusion slates on the horizon with active digitizers. Sacrifice some battery life, but the increased performance will help for productivity.
The Fusion and Sandy Bridge slates have me interested. Those might be able to play something like Civ 5 on a slate which would be fantastic.
Oh and a 16:9 screen is absolutely horrible for a slate. Waaaaaay too narrow when in portrait view.
