AMD: R9xx Speculation

"They're" and "their" :p
Heh. That one doesn't happen as often as "you're/your". The "too and to" mix up happens a lot... even on CNN's site. I've seen this stuff invade the real world. I actually received an advertising post card with "Your invited" in large bold letters. How does it not get caught somewhere along the way.

something about the 12th of this month? Their not helping the cause with the lack of info on there "FlagShip"

That's the day after tomorrow. Seems highly unlikely to me. More likely the 21st of January at earliest or even launch in March should not be ignored as a possibility.

"dual GF110" just cracks me up every time, I wonder what's it like in Fuads universe where things like that are actually thought as a possibility

Not to sound too cynical but in Fuad's world he dreams of clicks rather than sheep.

Now he can claim he's right if they launch any time in the first quarter. Brilliant. I learned just as much about the launch when I read my cereal box this morning.
Yeah, especially since it is the same info from ~1month ago.

In reference to Cayman availability-

Depending on sales, there might be a small hiccup in Feburary due to Chinese New Year (and another reason).

Hm? Where do the 1GB Cayman fits into the grand scheme of things...??? I got a feeling AMD messed up the HD6xxx branding...I know its just a numbering scheme...but i dont think they are getting the desired profits... or the marketing impact they wanted...could AMD also have misjudged Fermi 2.0?

BTW it doesn't looks like Caymans are doing as well as Cypress....as in sold out > increasing MRSP well...stocks are still abundant....could be 40nm yields are too good...but i thought Barts did quite well to see some price hiking....Caymans...my predicted price jacking did not materialize...

True...from a consumer view...the last few weeks were not kind to AMD.....first with bad internet feedback from Barts' renaming...then Cayman after all the secrecy did not make a major impact....Fermi 2.0 did better...and come Sandy Bridge with its positive reviews, BD still unknown ... CES had tons of portables propping the news and Nvidia/ARM/MS tie up...AMD has none to note..and back to the GPU wars of GTX560 vs 1GB Caymans, GTX590 vs HD6990....tight contests for AMD again...

Yes, and the results are obvious and visible to everyone. Things are not looking good.

Also, Dirk Meyer is fired, there is a new CEO. Why? Are things in the company going well? :(
I don't think it has to do with Nvidia alone, AMD is still a company that lacks vision about where they are heading, sometime it looks like they don't heard about something as simple as SWOT when it comes to strategy...

Nvidia was facing a challenge with the dying IGP market but MS announcement about Windows 8 just reverse the situation AMD is in deep shit imho and they are late at it on top of it (or as usual..).

I'm disappointed this company had great idea lately.

Half the places say fired, other half he resigned?
Anyway, that's not exactly "big news", CEOs get changed when the company wants strategy changes - Meyer did what he was supposed to, get APUs executed ready, get the manufacturing to GF carried out and company "stabilized" at least somewhat.

As for "underestimating Fermi 2.0", no, there's no Fermi 2.0, there's just same old GF100, just b revision of it which is somewhat better than the original due optimizations made to layout, some fat cut off etc, but if you think AMD "underestimated" them, do you also think they've been underestimating them ever since they moved to the "sweetspot strategy", since the current situation is the exact same it has been the since the HD3800-series (10-15% behind the competition when comparing fastest single chip cards, while having a lot smaller chip)

And u think that a tegra 2+ some 2*1GHz ARM cores will make u throw away your 3 GHz desktop quad core cpu and a decent GPU when windows 8 arives ?
These "mobile revolutions" and "super phones"are just shareholders wet dreams. I think they will get over it after a while when people get sick of all those gadgets and who knows what with 1 milion unused functions.

Me thinks when fusion comes out and later APU aplications will emerge than i think the rest of the industry will just stare what did they miss out. And of course how far will they trail behind with AMD working on new gpus paralel.

AMD was late to the netbook party, like coming when the party was practically over. And now they are missing the boat on the tablet. That's two major computing trends that AMD missed while Meyers was at the helm.

It's the way it went down that's big news. It's not often that a board fires a CEO in such abrupt fashion. The fact that they haven't identified a successor is telling.

The biggest failing I can think of is getting outmanoeuvered by Intel in spite of all the Fusion hype. Intel essentially delivered Fusion before AMD did and that was supposed to be their ace.

It takes several years to make a new CPU.

Besides, Atom is actually a sort of failure that was saved by the sudden arrival of budget mini notebooks. It was supposed to be their chance to get into MIPS / ARM territory but it has far too high power usage for that. Additionally it is an offshoot of the failed Larrabee tech.

Is Bulldozer behind schedule? They seem to be stretching their Phenom II line like back with Athlon 64 X2. Bulldozer is starting to remind me of Barcelona.

Sure, but Dirk Meyer has only been serving as CEO since July 2008. How much of an impact could he really have had on Llano's schedule?
