The price of next-gen console games was a hot issue last year when the bulk of Xbox 360 launch titles carried a $60 price tag. This week, Activision CEO Robert Kotick confirmed what many gamers already expected or even assumed: the company's PlayStation 3 games will retail for roughly $60.

In a presentation to the Merrill Lynch Media and Entertainment Conference yesterday, Kotick indicated that the company is taking a next-gen pricing approach to its next-gen software, thanks in part to its success pricing PlayStation Portable games at $50, and Xbox 360 software like the best-selling Call of Duty 2 at $60.

"We have not seen a lot of consumer resistance at the higher price points and we expect that all of our next-generation products will be launched at $60 price points," Kotick said.

Well, hopefully, if PS3 games are sold at a cheaper price, 360 games will follow suit... But based on PSP game prices I don't have a lot of faith.

I can't believe they are charging 50 bucks for PSP games, nor how they'll keep that up if the "next-gen" games are only 10 dollars more. I hope some publishers get bitten in the rear in the near future and lower game prices for at least some of their games.

Good to hear. There'd been some rumours of even more expensive PS3 prices, so this is a relief (if slightly expected).

Well typically all the good games become budget titles eventually, and I've grown accustomed to waiting until that happens. It's almost like an automatic filter for quality titles ... :D Of course, some titles even I can't wait, but then they are clearly worth getting them for the higher price for me.

yeah waiting for budget price it is again. hopefully with the increase to the initial price budget wont go up but i wouldn't bet on it.

You know what sucks about articles like this though? It's like apples and pears or something...

They tell us what PS3 games will sell for in Japan, tell us what Wii games will sell for in Japan, and then tell us what 360 games sell for in the US... I mean, what do 360 games sell for in Japan? ;)

Frankly I think the US game pricing for PS3 titles will be $60, in line with Activision's own moves.

No resistance by consumers??? Now that's a new line for pricing something. I'm just waiting for some company to see how far they can push it. If they buy at $60, would they take $65 if we convinced them it had more (but really didn't)?

I think it is widely accepted as a matter of fact, it does cost more to dev on PS3. This can give an idea of what devs might be thinking for the PS3.

A) The system will have a much larger install base over 360 giving the opportunity for more sales (although 360 games are selling like they come with a bag of crack inside).

B) By having the price at $60 for both platforms, we can offset the higher development costs on PS3 by spreading the expense between both systems.

Probably a sound strategy either way.

Where is this accepted and why? I'd say the largest part of game development cost by far this gen is content creation, and that should be nearly identical between the 2 systems. But even if you consider the programming effort to cause that increase in cost, most multi-platform games will use third party middleware anyway. And Xenon is also a multi-core in-order CPU with quite a small shared cache, so it's not much easier than Cell to get good performance out of - unlike Xbox1 vs PS2.
In short, I contest this widely accepted fact.

Unless of course you believe that PS3 games will have higher quality, more expensive content ;)

Did anyone actually think PS3 games would be cheaper than 360 games?

MS doesn't force the $60 price. It's sort of a gentlemen's agreement between publishers that prices need to increase.

Content creation will be the same across both systems seeing as their content would be created on a PC anyway. However, if you are saying that multi-plat devs have just been smoking crack when they say it will take more time/effort to work with the PS3 and cell than the 360 you should stop kidding yourself. The PS3 has the power advantage, but to draw it out will require more time/effort which my friend=$$. You can middleware all you want, but you're still going to have to modify code and use some of your own.
You can use middleware for the 360, but the same still applies as above. The difference between the two consoles is the documentation/software libraries available for 360. I know you're not going to argue Sony is good with either one of these. They've proven this time and time again.

I don't know if this info had been inform yet? but at Sony PS3 homepage, price for preodering games are for $59.99.
