- Nintendo of America announced the retail price of GameCube will be reduced to US$99 (~11,800 yen) by the end of September.

Go MagicBox!

If true, this is a damn smart thing for Nintendo to do. It'll boost their own marketshare, _and_ bleed some more out of MS as they follow suit in price cuts.

I'd wager money that you won't get a free game at the $99USD price point though ;)

This is what Nintendo wanted all along.

Now they can concentrate 100% on games in the second half of the GCN's lifecycle.

It's about time. If Ninty would have done this a year ago they would'nt be staring at a million unit lead by XB. Matt said it's very likely that NOA would do the free game deal with the $99 price.

Hopefully they will, because if they don't.. well, then the consumer doesn't actually save anything (ie: this is just a big phony marketing stunt).

The GCN has been selling for $150 with a choice of a free GBA player or a free game for some time so the GCN alone was already $100. However this deal allows consumers to spend their saved $50 on anything they want. I don't think it will come with a free game though. If it does then I'll be getting myself a second GCN ;)

Magnum PI: While I don't think that the GameCube should be considered a child's toy, you've got the right idea. ;)

"(discounting Japan, it is)"

Once again. Huh???

Silly claims/marketshare math like that belong on Usenet or planetxbox, not here.

GC and XBox are neck and neck for world wide sold units. GC has a couple of million units sold in Japan, Xbox has like 400k. Subtract that couple mil of GCs and the 400k Xboxes from their worldwide total (to disclude Japan), and the Xbox has a 1 mil (or so) lead.

The argument for discounting Japan is that EU and NA experience larger growth than the shrinking JP market, thus they are of more importance.. and it also makes the Xbox look better ;)

Ofcourse, this is what I'm assuming Goldni was referring to.

3 posts and you're already an expert on what should and should not be discussed here? :?

what a strange definition of worldwide...

me too i want to make my own arbitrary worldwide sales figures. i just decided we wont count consoles sold at a loss.. because this is no viable bizness..

whats a tremendous lead the GC now has over the xbox !!!

;)

oh god.... again with a GC vs Xbox thread??? u guys are just unbelievable.... does it really matters if one of the 2 sold 1million units more than the other? that's not gonna change their situation by much is it?!?!
their situation would be MUCH different if they started selling like PS2 is selling. now that would be fun and it would raise the standard of the software sold by a decent bit, given the competition....

I think if BOTH (i.e. GC and XBox) were to start selling like the PS2 then the standard of software would drop considerably (on at least one of them ;)).

Sorry. Couldn't resist... ^_^

interesting... is this supposed to ba funny or do u really think that?

i always thought that competition raises the standard......

or maybe i'm missing the funny side of your post... i mean i get it, but i was talking seriously...

Well... the reasoning behind it was:

Uh! The GC/XB are selling like crazy. We've still got all the licenses lying around. NOW! Get some devkits and make some rushjobs so we can cash in on it.

which I think holds a certain degree of truth; if suddenly a systems becomes popular people will want to take advantage of that popularity --- more often than not without adequate resources (I'd imagine it is quite hard to find good people with experience on a GC, XB should be less of a problem) which may well lead to an increase in subpar titles instead of more high-quality ones.

well of course the amount of shovelware on ps2 is pretty high, but thats because there are a whole lot of games for it. that doesnt mean that there arent good games. more games means more shitty games but also more good games....

I don't see Nintendo's reasoning n this one. Why wasn't thi s annouced during that last shareholder meeitng? Why halt production and then annouce a price cut? The price cut should help gamecube units move better, which would mean more units woul dbe needed.

The only reason I can think of would be so the retailers, that have a backlog could clear their stock easier. However I can't see retailers not wanting more at that price aftwards...
