360: VF5 Playable Preview

omg, they say the online play is good! they say you may lose ~5 fps though in a normal match but bad matches can make combos nearly impossible. Maybe they had a high ping since there's only other reviewers to play against.

I've tried the demo, but I really can't get into it. The characters don't seem to respond very quickly to my moves. Is there something wrong with the demo in that regard that anyone knows of? Or am I just not used to VF anymore? I'll try some different characters later, but I was really disappointed. The graphics really aren't all that either, but that's not that important.

you may need to sand the edge of the D-pad to make it more responsive. It's a very hardcore game so the combos are probably really difficult unless you're a longtime fan.

I used to play some VF4, but since I've never had the opportunity to play really hardcore levels, I never got drawn out of my Tekken passion, which I've been playing since Tekken 2. For a HD version of a PS2 game, Tekken 5 on PS3 looks very nice and smooth. I never got to play the PS3 demo of VF, so I don't know if there are differences or if it is really just the controller ...

I'm pretty good with all the different combos in Tekken though, so in that respect I should be fine. Maybe someone has some pointers, I'll check online ...

The combo methods you learned in Tekken won't matter much in VF. VF is as much about spacing and timing as it is button tapping. Most hardcore Tekken fans dislike VF and vice versa because being great at one doesn't necessarily translate to being great at the other.

Just remember, with VF, getting your timing and spacing down is first and foremost. Hitting the "right" buttons but miss-timing your attack will result in a lot of frustration. In this regards VF has a steeper learning curve and takes a lot more skill/practice.

Well, 1Up just gave the game a 10! Eurogamer also gave it a 9, so it's a thumbs up from the press it seems... another 360 game getting >=90 on Metacritic. What a year!

I'm loving it, by the way. I take back my "easy" comment now I'm 10th dan. I just ordered the Hori arcade stick for $75AUD delivered from Gameasylum - an absolute bargain when you consider the use it'll get from SC4 and SSF2T:HD.

If anyone wants it, you can use the voucher code asylumgift for 15% off.

A few other reasons noted
  • They added tonnes more items to customise your character - I think the actual number was nearly double the customisation items
  • More money at the start of quest mode made it less of a grind... making money isn't easy, so you can pretty much customise a character quite well without fighting anyone at all in quest mode
  • You can take your customised character to a friends house via a memory unit. The PS3 unit doesn't let you do this, so you can only have local customised character fights, which AM2 apparently cited as a "hardware issue" on the PS3 (which sounds like nonsense ;))
  • Of course, there's online battles, which are noted to work very well. I haven't tried yet since I'm still in noob territory :p
They did criticise the 360's DPad, but I'm using the analogue stick and have no issues except for some of the crazy stuff. A quick summary noted
In all, this is the game the PS3 version should have been, but wasn't.

weird... thats the first review saying the game looks a lot better on 360... most reviews say they're more or less the same but a little cleaner on 360 and colors are more vibrant.

Doesn't appear they are alone.

Virtua Fighter 5 comes to 360 with a variety of updates from the PS3 version. Already a fine-looking game on PS3, VF5 looks even better on 360. On Microsoft's monster machine, you get clean lines, excellent lighting, and some great environmental effects (such as mist rolling through the arena)

i don't think IGN is saying the 360 version is cleaner, has better lighting and better environmental effects, i think they're just saying its clean, has good lighting and good environmental effects. they clearly say its better than the ps3 version i see that, but they don't necessarily say its a lot better. GR makes it sound like the 360 version is far superior.

edit: heres a comparison video. http://www.n4g.com/News-74673.aspx

GR clearly states they've done a direct HDMI cable switch comparison. I doubt many other reviewers did anything like that.

I also doubt a lot of gamers would notice (or care about) the difference (like other comparisons we're talking details), which says a lot about the importance. Gameplay features like a newer version of the game and online play are far more important.

I disagree. They go out of their way to mention the 360 version is better, then mention those things immediately after in the same paragraph.

The only thing I can really tell from the low rez video is the aliasing is more noticeable on the ps3 version /shrug. Would have been nice if they actually ran the same characters side by side in the vid.

I don't really doubt that the 360 version is looking better at this point, but I distrust anything gamesradar says by default, as especially after they were bought by MS they have had a very bad history of strategic 'disinformation' (the 3 great lies during E3 2006 being their absolute lowest point).

Anyway, again, great that this turned out so well for 360 owners and great also that the online appears to hold up for fighting games, as I think it's a big plus for the genre.

Soon now, Tekken Online will also be available for me (which is still my big favorite, but I'm giving VF5 another shot soon - I would really like to be able to compare the two games in more detail and learn from the comparison - oh and I'd really like to be on a team that develops a completely new fully next-gen fighting game :p - I can dream, though, right? :) )

360 version has been publicly advertised as "the one with better AA" by the developers, it's fairly safe for reviewers to say "better" even if they are blind (which is probably the case most of the time).

I don't know how much AA PS3 version had, but AA is important in general. Good for 360 VF fans.

the visuals part of the review is usually in the same paragraph. one of the reasons why i don't think hes saying those particular things are better on 360 is because he says "and some great environmental effects (such as mist rolling through the arena)", the PS3 version also has mist rolling through the arena. also, if he was saying these particular things are better on 360, i think he would have said it in the same sentence. the one thing i can see being better on 360 is the "clean lines" comment because of the higher level of AA.

just so were clear, i'm not doubting the 360 version looks better (thats a given), i'm only questioning how much better GR is making it sound.
