[360, PS3] BF:BC2 and BF 1943 online

Heh, that's the exact same strat I used to own 1942 with waaay back when. Does 1943 still have the same parabolic shot modeling that 1942 did? That was the sign of a person who actually knew what they were doing, when they could quickly respond to a surprise tank attack and hit at range with the first shot.

Yes, although it doesn't appear that snipers have much, if any, bullet drop  I guess they thought lag was sufficient!

In this case though I was more referring to anyone hopping in to be the turret gunner being a sitting duck with a low lifespan. Either you died fast if the tank driver tried to stay near the front lines, as in typical WWII tactics as infantry support and cover vehicle. Or bored to death if they stayed at max range as small artillery (what I usually did if the map was conducive to it).

The gunner was also GREAT at detouring aircraft from coming around. A couple tanks with gunners would be sufficient to ping your typical bombers to death before they got a good approach. Of course they were always sniper bate... Gunners were a nice addition when you had a tank or two flanking a flag while ground troops came in. Now with destructible cover the gunner can really mop up guys exposed in buildings, but the inability to "get safe" when needed or having some decent front cover does make him an easy target for those not in the immediate mix.

On the negative the "fast and furious, dumbed down" gameplay of BF1943 also still has not adopted prone and with it the *far* superior deviation model in earlier games that really rewarded thoughtful gunplay. I am finding jumping and shooting, or in the least no penalty for free look 180 degree spins, to be a run-and-gun pleasure but really diminish the gunplay balance of crouching and minimiing movements to take good shots on moving targets.

/sigh...

Damn, that right there makes this an instant non-purchase for me. That was part of the attraction of 1942 for me. The small nod to realism in infantry and vehicle combat.

Ah well...

SB

I played the trial version last night,. The game completely caught me off-guard. I thought it was a remake of an arcade game with flying planes. Wasn't expecting the 1st person view & the Tribes vibe. Unfortunately I didn't realize that there was a time limit on the trial. That was totally bogus & cheap. Had I known that I might have sought out the tutorial first. Now I've got a game were I have a much better handle on things, but the trial is now expired. By the time I get around to affording the game(when it hits $10) all the online players will be so seasoned that playing online won't be very enjoyable for somebody that's not as good as the opposition. This is one of the reasons why playing online games like these months after they're released isn't very fun. Too bad I won't have anymore trial time later to verify this. Great move EA.

I think you can download it and play again 30 minutes with another Playstation account.

So how does the Coral Sea unlock work? the 360 is at 41mil while the PS3 is at 21 mil. Do both consoles have to be at 43mil or does the 360 get the unlock as soon as it hits 43mil?

btw, it cracked the Top 10

BF1943 is a fun pick up game. BF1943 is also one of the buggiest console games to date. Server issues, lag issues, squad issues, rendering issues, crashing issues. The number of basic collision issues with navigating the map has been annoying. While the gameplay is fierce and accessible (great job there) it definately won't weather time well IMO. I know it isn't supposed to, but the gameplay doesn't pace well with the Conquest style gameplay (which still rocks... just not 12v12 with dumbed down gameplay).

Even with the dumbing down, I've gotten used to the gameplay and it's quite fun. Wake is probably the worst map for only 12 vs 12 due to it's size. The other 2 maps works pretty decent with 12 on 12. However, it's the technical issues that annoy me. Lets take a look at the some of the major squad issues.

Creating a squad before joining a game: last night, I was with 2 other people and we tried to create a lobby and then join. We'd get into a squad and try to launch into a game. Never worked. Worse, each time the squad was disbanded and we had to send the invites again. Seriously, this never came up in any of the QA testing? I find that very hard to believe.

Sending squad invites during game: this one is my favorite. You goto the squad screen, pick a person and goto send the invite. All of a sudden the "A" button to invite does not perform any function. You simply cannot invite them to your squad and often vice versa. Then at some random time, it might work again and it might stop working also. Again, are they trying to tell me this didn't show up in testing?

The news ticker at the bottom of the screen now reads: "43 Million Kills are completed, faster than expected, Coral Sea will unlock today congratulations"

Coral Sea is pretty fun, if you haven't tried it yet. I did pretty well, but only played two rounds. I think it would get old quicker than the other maps because of the lack of variety in play. You'd think it would just end up being a shit storm of planes crashing into eachother and no one would really excel, but in one round I played one guy had 20 kills and the next highest guy(me!) had less than 10. I think I went 14 and 4 in my second round?

Trying to join and there are all sorts of network issues right now, again :( Still haven't got to play Coral Sea...

are you still having issues?

after the 2nd day, I have connected first time, every time with never a disconnect

Still random games will have major lag issues and periods of spikes. Squads being split up between man changes and such is also an ongoing issue.

A couple things I think need to be addressed.

* No parachutes. This encourages using aircraft as taxis. Not to tute my own horn but I am a pretty good pilot and I can wipe out enemy ground targets like there is no tomorrow (even with a gamepad!) I don't mind sharing the air craft BUT I loath those who get in a plane and use it as a taxi to the nearest flag to cap it. What a waste of resources! If you won't take away the parachutes then at least take away their guns (give them a pistol). Even when parachuting for the right reasons (e.g. a good pilot on your six or getting nailed by AA) and bailing only to cap an unprotected flag it seems quite cheap, especially 12v12. It also takes away a hard earned K for the other pilot/AA gunner. If DICE cannot disable chutes or force a useless class on pilots, then why not make the cieling really, really high? This way aircraft, AA guns, snipers, etc can pick the pilot off on the way down.

* C4 is unreliable. I don't know how many times I put C4 down and detonated only to have nothing happen.

* Spotting. I wish 'spotting' enemy targets was more intuitive. It is odd in the plane to see a plane but it not show up on the minimap but it is on the HUD directional windows when it gets behind you--or the reverse, I never see a plane but it is on the minimap. I can see the later as my friendlies "spotting" it for me, but when I have made visual contact with an object it should be on the HUD. This is really annoying with tanks. You see them and can see someone is in it but it doesn't go onto the minimap or, more often, it isn't "designated" on screen. So you see all the red triangles for the troops but not the tank??? Personally, I would prefer all the troops NOT be visible from the aircraft because they are pretty cheap kills--the triangles give them away before I can even see them and I can straif theme with ease.

On the other hand I don't think Scott or Robert will agree that making Tanks more visible to me in the air is a good idea :devilish: On the other hand I cannot seem to get AA units spotted on a regular basis, even though I see them... and feel them!

* Lag. For having servers the game can be extremely laggy. Between the lag and bullet speedcertain tasks like sniping, dogfighting, and AA have an extra layer of variability that don't make them quite as accessible.

* Squads. Squads, Invites, Chat, etc are some of the most broken I have seen. Utterly suprising considering how much experience DICE has with the genre. The lack of ability to give basic commands, spot targets, or anyone to figure out how the "Frontline" is determined is ... frustrating. The lack of "team" in a team game is frustrating. As an aside, I wish my squad was Green on the mini-map.

* No Small Group Games. A small number of friends wanted to do some dogfighting (2v2) but we couldn't. This is a bummer :(

I really like the game and I am not sure ODST will pull we away for long. DICE did a lot of good things (games feel quite active for 12v12, the destruction fits WWII well, air strikes are done well, etc) but I hope some, if not all, of the above can be addressed.

Btw, great advertising for BFBC2. Hopefully communitity feedback helps BFBC2 ... and we can all hope for a full fledged 1944!

I fully expect that DICE will do nothing about these problems as they basically did jack squat to correct the issues with BF:BC. Voice chat in BF:BC is unreliable (at least on the PS3) to this day.

It sucks but they just do not seem to care and with the sales numbers as good as they are for this title, presumably there is little motivation for them to do anything about it.

The C4 bug especially drives me up the wall as the sniper class is my favourite.

IMHO of course.

Cheers
