[360] Halo 3: ODST

The trailer is great, just like the Halo 3 trailers. I just wish the Halo games had a similar tone and colur schemes. Halo is too cartoony for me, whereas these ads showcase how it should be (and how much better it feels, if this way). The cartoony aliens and sounds along with the colourfull colour schemes of Halo3 totally put me off.

I am guessing , one day they will HAVE to reboot the franchise and I hope they go the way these Ads are made. If that happens, they might find me buying Halo games too. :)

I wouldn't say that Halo is my fave game of all time (Enjoyed 1, never played 2, 3 was "Meh" until I played it Co-Op, then it blew me away) but I personally think that one of the very best things about Halo is the look of it.

The Halo games have managed to achieve a rare thing, in that they looked like no game before them and no game since has really looked the same. Compare that with the Call of Duty titles, Killzone, Resistance, Medal of Honor, Ghost Recon, Quake 4, etc and, with the exception of a few stylistic differences, are pretty much interchangable in looks.

Few shooters manage to create a distinct visual identity, Halo is one, Crysis is another and possibly Gears too.

One thing to consider is that in 2012-2013 the original Halo 1 gamers will be 10+ years older. A grittier look may fit well with an aging fan base... then again MS will probably want to keep the gore down and the look cartoony as to be a more "palettable" shooter. Just last weekend I overheard some parents talking about games as they let their kids play Halo 1, and one of the mothers really lamented the violence of Call of Duty but she was aok with Halo. It was interesting listening in on the discussion and seeing what was categorized "over the top" violence. The blood and death animations and more gritty, human looking nature of the enemies was what they were focusing on (good thing they NEVER played Gears!). Halo has mainly space marine vs. alien action with little blood and "pass out" or "other" style death sequences. There is more focus on doing than focus on what you did maybe that seems to shift people's focus?

Interesting…
So a game place in a colorfully circus where you chainsaw locust's clowns, it's OK for them?
If yes, I'm selling the idea to Epic!!! Well you got some paiement for the study market! ;)

But, yes in Halo it's not something that kids thinks that it's real, so this have not the same impact that a COD who related reals or possibles situations, and try to be the more realistic possible.
I'm also hope they don't let their kids shown TV news…

I think the point was there wasn't any overt or over the top violence.

So in addition to no blood and guts and realistic exploding bodies, you also don't have curb stomps, chainsaws, people running around on fire screaming, etc.

Everything is done in a rather downplayed cartoon like fashion. Which evidently some parents are more comfortable with their kids playing.

So yeah, remove the blood and guts from Gears. Remove violent finishing moves. Remove the chainsaw. Make it a bit more cartoony and less realistic. And then figure out a way to make it attractive to not only kids but also adults.

Something Halo has done quite well for a FPS.

Regards,
SB

I don't want to watch it but for anyone who has - how does the length compare to Halo 3? I'm guessing it's obviously shorter but by how much?

I have watched the intro and first mission which I think ended at Part 7 out of 25 or something like that. It definatly is going to be shorter game than Halo 3, probably around two hours shorter at minimum from what I saw, granted he was playing on easy mode which is a cake-walk in terms of difficulty. Overall I thought the production values where superior to Halo, and it just looked like a much more cohesive single-player experiance.

It's an easy setting though, and Halo plays completely differently between Easy and Heroic. So realistically ODST is a 6-7 hour game.

Well base on Halo 3 in easy it's 4 hours in Legendary more than 14 hours.

@upnorthsox: No problems, but yes for one time we are the first delivered! But not me! ;)

My first run-through of Sacred 2 was in excess of 30 hours. My second was about 6 hours. The time taken for one person to complete a game isn't a particularly accurate measure of an average length or how long you'd take. ;)
