[360] Halo 3: ODST

Just thought I would post a link to the IGN stage demo, which I felt did a better job of presenting the game than the demo they did at the Microsoft press conference.

Halo ODST ~20 min demo

Some things I picked up from the demo:

  • game begins with orbital drop into New Mombasa when something goes wrong and you are separated from your squad and knocked unconscious
  • totally open game world right from the beginning(surprised they never mentioned that at E3)
  • you use an overhead map to set way-points and investigate areas of interest
  • game uses health packs and a small regenerative "stamina" system
  • you explore the open world to find clues about your fellow squad mates
  • each clue plays a flashback sequence that allows you to experience events through the eyes of your squad mates earlier in the day
  • The graphics look improved over Halo 3, the city at night looks great with occasional lightning flashes above the blanket the screen in white. The city looks epic and there are some really nice vistas in the background
  • animation in the cinematic looks professional now, whereas before it looked amateurish to downright bad in some cinematic sequences

Anyways, whereas before I was not impressed with the E3 stage demo this IGN hands-on video preview has done a far better job at presenting the game and it seems like Bungie has another winner on its hands with Halo 3: ODST.

Thanks for the vid link. I'm pretty stoked. Fightfight mode looks to be just what I hoped it would be - Horde. Man, this is going to be awesome in co-op, and I like how it seems you can take your time and explore the city.

Theres been a lot of clarity from MS regarding Halo coming out of Comic Con

First, the Peter Jackson Halo is apparently shelved,

Jackson told Joystiq that, "The Halo project is no longer happening, it sort of collapsed when the movie didn't end up happening."

Second, Bungie has stated Reach is their last Halo:

"After Reach that's it for us," Bungie's Lars Bakken told IGN. "We're already working on a new IP that we can't talk about yet, I don't know when we'll be talking about it - when we're ready I suppose."

So, things are pretty clear now, with the Jackson Halo out of the way. There's ODST in 09, Reach in 010, and then likely the next Halo (4?) from MS, probably in 013 (if it follows the every 3 years pattern of mainline Halo games) and quite possibly for the next xbox.

And to make this more OT, here is the comic con ODST trailer

ODST is looking pretty good to me overall, despite being on the Halo 3 engine. Amazing what a little color will do.

Shame they couldn't manage a little more resolution, or at least some AA. It's disappointing MS doesn't bother to put more effort into the image quality of their flagship franchise, but hopefully it at least runs smoother than Halo 3.

I think they had to make some choices, I would tend to think that they have prioritized content for OSDT while Reach will be the title seing a technology update.

I think like Halo 3, they prioritized gameplay which seems to have resonated with players much more than some games that prioritized graphics.

So far it's been a good tradeoff for them it seems. Although myself, I'd REALLY appreciate it if they at least got some AA.

They prioritized some goofy lighting system which requires rendering the scene twice only to come up with a sub HD resolution and no AA, yet even the lighting looks rather ugly in a lot of places and never looks notably more impressive than other games which have HD resolution, AA, or both.

Sure, but at least those have AA, giving them notably better image quality than Halo 3. The worst part is Bungie always releases insane quality screenshots, while the actual game looks so rough.

Well, if Halo 3 is a big seller, which it is, I dont see why Bungie has to care. It's not as if the populace turned up their collective noses. Only an ultra tiny minority on message boards apparently did.

I certainly hope Reach looks a lot better though.

It's not necessarily the lack of AA that bothers me about H3, but a lot of other things.

I'm busy playing Crysis on maxed settings with no AA, and the lack of AA isn't very noticeable in that game. It wouldn't be in my top 3 graphical flaws.

Similarly, I dont think applying 2XAA to H3 would make much difference in the fact I feel the graphics are subpar.

All that said, the game has a unique saturated look, and I dont think ODST looks bad. I think some people really overrate how horrible the game supposedly looks, especially on neogaf.

And doesnt everybody use bullshots these days? If they dont, then they just get ripped up on message boards even more, since everybody else does, their shots will look particularly bad in comparison.

They clearly care enough to "mislead people", politely speaking.

Evidently either most people weren't mislead or the game was so great in their mind that they didn't mind.

Either way, I doubt most of the people on this forum were mislead and it remains the best selling exclusive this generation by a long shot.

And most certainly the best (or at least most popular by a LONG shot) multiplayer exclusive this generation so far.

I am really looking forward to see how the story plays out..
This holiday I replayed H3, and I really enjoyed it. ODST can't come soon enough for me :)

Mario Kart Wii has sold more than twice as many units as Halo 3. You must mean the best-selling Xbox exclusive.
