[360] Halo 3: ODST

Cheers, I always did like these live-action ones... Makes me believe a movie could be done pretty well. :p ;_;

Come on. Someone do a Halo movie alread!

I had no interest in a Halo movie (I don't really "get" the Halo Universe) until I saw the Neill Blomkamp shorts. Then when he was down to direct the feature, I saw the potential.... potential that has been bourne out by District 9.

As that's seemingly all fallen apart, I've pretty much lost interest.

Wow... that is easily the best advertisement I have ever seen for a video game! No one can touch the advertising quality of the Halo series, that was just too awesome.

I agree. Makes you wonder how the gaming market gots so big because outside of targeting gamers, most publishers don't seem to put much dollars into advertising to the general public with any level of creativity.

The best ads are all in game, like the current Batman one. Anyone can pay ton of cash to a Hollywood studio to make a cool movie, but the money is better used to improve the game IMO - I'm not playing a movie.

While I agree with that part it still doesn't take away that the trailer was awesome and well done and fitting for the Halo series war story.

Well, as an ad, I think this particular style really sets it apart. Although it may not have much to do with the game other than the story setting or name, these Microsoft ads are looking somewhat beyond the gamer. At least, that's the impression I get when they start bringing in human actors portrayin war-scenarios that do not glorify war in the very least.

-> It's grabbing the attention of casual viewers rather than gamers who are most likely going to know about the game. At this point, a game-ad for anything related to Halo seems redundant. ;)

Pretty much. They could just come out with a "Halo:ODST out Sept 22." and flash that on the screen for 5 seconds and it'd be enough for the existing fanbase. These ads are designed to generate buzz outside of that and I'm sure and spot like that will do just as intended.

Can anyone tell me why they're speaking hungarian in that trailer??

Edit: apparently it was filmed here with some hungarian actors... although I have to assure you the country doesn't look like alien planets or ruined landscapes ;)

Awesome stuff by the way...

Ok sorry for the ignorance (bare with me I'm not a console person), but (as an American) where is the best place to preorder this? Is Amazon an acceptable place? :D

Halo is pretty much beyond the point where they would benefit from creating an ad that was just gameplay. Enough people have been exposed to Halo at this point that whatever gameplay they might show in a 30 sec clip is probably already in a consumers mind when they hear the name of the product. And any ad focused on showing what is different in this game would only be interesting to the sorts of people who are going to buy it regardless of how it's advertised. One thing that should be very clear by now is that MS know exactly how they need to market the Halo franchise.

I'm also not sure why you believe that the marketing budget and the development budget for a game like Halo is in any way related.

For me I preordered it from Gamestop because at Gamestop they have a limited edition that comes with a wireless controller which looks pretty nice. I also like picking it up on release date.

That trailer kicked ass.

MS really doesn't screw around with marketing the Halo franchise.

Mario Kart Wii has sold more than twice as many units as Halo 3. You must mean the best-selling Xbox exclusive.

Mario Kart's sold 17.2M and Halo 3 10.1M. A lot more, but not more than twice as many.

I'm wishing I had pre-ordered this. But it's too soon after Batman. Tempted to sell it just to get ODST. Might even sell Halo Wars, still haven't played that.

Halo Wars is a quick and dirty fun. But for me didn't have much replay. The cutscenes are great through.

I'd recommend just doing a quick playthrough then selling it. Shouldn't take you more than a few hours.

Oh and that advert kicked much bootie. Hope the director for it gets a lot more work, he deserves it.

Same director that did the Believe ad for Halo 3 acoording to the PR. Also extended version coming next week.

PR

In addition to the online debut of the 90 second short, Halo fans in the United States will be treated to a special, extended two minute 30 second version exclusively on Spike TV on Monday September 7. The extended version will premiere during “Band of Brothers” at 10:30 PM ET/PT.

The short will also be available to download on Xbox LIVE starting September 8.

For the production of the “Halo 3: ODST” live-action short, Microsoft and Bungie partnered with ad agency TAG SF, Legacy Effects (props), Asylum (visual effects) and Final Cut (editing). The short features an original musical score written and produced by Human. The short was directed by Rupert Sanders with MJZ, the director of the award-winning “Halo 3” ad spot “Believe.” The short was filmed on location in Budapest, Hungary.

Also launching today at 6:00 p.m. PT is a unique “Halo 3: ODST” interactive experience site on www.xbox.com/halo. Visitors will be in control of an Operations of Naval Intelligence (ONI) application that blends science, psychology and analysis to evaluate which ODST candidates are best suited for upcoming missions in “Halo 3: ODST.” Featuring over 20 minutes of interactive content, visitors can interact with the evaluations of the four ODST squad members they will be fighting alongside in “Halo 3: ODST” in order to dive deeper into the fiction of the game. Microsoft and Bungie worked with AKQA SF and TAG SF on the experience site.
