[360] Forza Motorsport 3

That's why I usually do the WMV HD videos on GT. The compression artifacts while still bad aren't quite AS bad. Still impossible to tell whether there's any AA or not though.

From this link above...

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/pax-09-forza-motorsport/55689?type=wmv

The cockpit view in shows virtually no aliasing except where the obvious compression blocks are. Light poles in the distance however appear to be aliased.

Is it possible to do selective AA?

One thing that is quite noticeable though is that environmental reflections on the cars remains quite impressive. Watch the reflection of the roadside trees on the car while in cockpit view for example. Stadiums and everything are quite well reflected.

Also check it out in WMV HD at 1:12. There appears to be virtually no aliasing in the cockpit while there appears to be some aliasing on the two cars ahead of it. It's a bit weird. Wish they had better quality.

The road surface still remains quite impressive.

Regards,
SB

I downloaded the vid and stared at an ocean of blocks.....very poor quality, i don't even know why they call that quality "HD", i saw some jaggedness but it was to much mixed in with a lot of blocking.

i think this pic of GRID is 2xaa, not sure.

and this is a shot of 360's GRID.

...............maybe forza3's AA cycles back and forth.:???:

Anyway, it was good that GT showed the realtime footage.
By doing this, they force Turn10 to release direct feed realtime footage, in order to make up for the GT compressed vids.

Edit: Misread your post, my apologies. As Rockster pointed out you were absolutely right on.

I have stated my lack of experience analyzing the qualities of 3D images (especially as compared to other members of this community) I am very experienced with video compression. These videos even in the highest quality WMV versions (both the Flash and Quicktime are 960X540 resolution in addition to being poorly encoded) show a whole laundry list of compression artifacts. Banding, blocking, mosquito noise, lack of detail. They're a mess!

Having said this, there's one graphical issue I see that comes through in this video that isn't as apparent in the off-screen videos we have seen previously: The aliasing. This is likely present in the source and is actually softened in the off-screen captures making it less apparent.

Other than that you now have a choice between a softened, washed out image that's encoded well (at nearly 4X the bitrate in the case of the Gamersyde videos) or a pristine image that's encoded poorly. Unfortunately, I think at this point neither represents the game completely accurately.

Yeah and its only taken them 1 month away from the launch date to do so.:p

Huh? There's been plenty of real gameplay footage, going back to E3. Some offscreen I suppose, but the E3 trailer featured gameplay and was direct feed, and there has been other direct feed at Gamespot, IGN etc since.

And the gametrailers videos look good, imo. Yes of course the compression is poor, but the game itself still looks great to me, not sure what I'm supposed to be missing, other than apparently an organized troll attack today across various forums based on these poor quality vids.

I cannot see the video (QT) but is the above a frame from the video?

Seems you are correct, and confirmed at 60 fps. The bugatti video has also just been posted in hd on forzamotorsport.net for those interested.

Che (Turn 10 PR/Community Manager) promises a 2 Min gameplay video with higher quality (and 60fps) will be posted on the Forza Motorsports website tomorrow. Seems they weren't too thrilled with GT's videos either.

Doh, I thought it was going to be direct feed gameplay.

Yeah same here. For a while its being looking like "Forza Motorsport 3 Manager" rather than "Forza Motorsport 3". Glad to see some racing captures are coming out soon.

Also, strange, I too wonder why they didnt allow Gamersyde to capture video? They always upload with nice high bitrate and 60fps captures.:???: (unless thats just rumours)

Without knowing the details, I would suspect it's because Gamersyde wasn't present at PAX and Turn 10 wasn't ready to allow direct feed at Gamescon. When the review code goes out, I'd expect Gamersyde will be able to get some videos made if T10 doesn't specifically accommodate them before them.

You know what they say about assumptions...

Yeah tomorrow is gameplay with HUD. But what all the trolls fail to realize is that these so called "promo vids" are all captured in-game with the HUD turned off at 60fps (notice there's no motion blur) which means it's basically what you'll see when you play the game. The Bugatti footage was captured during a race and not during replays.

Anyway, haters will hate, no matter what the circumstance, so keep on keepin on. ;)

It actually looks like a mix at best, though. At least some of the shots look like the "attract mode" at least. And it seems as if it would be awfully hard to drive with some of those camera views. ;)

my grabs of that vid.

I spotted some jaggedness in the environments, obviously you cant really see it in these pics but if you watch it in motion you can see it. to the best of my knowledge the anti-aliasing seems to be primarily focused on the cars. (i did notice AA in some of the objects in the environments, so it could be selective type of AA)

what ever it is it seems to be working out nicely.....it's fooling a lot of 360 gamers in some of the forums who think it's 1080p ;)

Do we have any screens showing the Laguna Seca so we can compare with real life?
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/09/08/circuit-logic-mazda-captures-laguna-seca-on-google-street-view/

It still seems that the game's extremely saturated look is what keeps it from looking realistic, colours simply aren't that vibrant in real life. I wonder why T10 still persist with it, are they intentionally going for a non-photorealistic look? Like the art styles of Halo 3, Resistance etc.

Cause employing a more realistic colour palette wouldn't be more expensive to run now would it?
