Nintendo News: The World Goes Portable with Nintendo DS - 21 Million Sold!

REDMOND, Wash., July 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Nintendo delivers on its promise to bring video gaming to the masses. In less than two years since its Nov. 21, 2004 launch, Nintendo has sold more than 21 million Nintendo DS™ systems worldwide. By comparison, Apple® shipped one million of its ever- popular iPod® music players in its first 19 months. The rate of Nintendo DS units being sold equates to 23 systems per minute -- that's nearly one every two seconds -- non-stop since launch.

Well deserved too, I might add. I was sceptic initially, but the console just continues to impress. This success in sales will assure great software support over the long haul as well, which is just even better. The DS lite is a true masterstroke - NV PR-heads, take note! I've hardly heard anyone who thinks the Lite sucks, and uncounted numbers who think it rocks. I'm very happy for Nintendo, I hope the Wii is as big a success - though that does seem somewhat doubtful. :)

off-topic

oops, which reminds me: does anybody know a decent source of fat graphite (or black) DSes, that would be a good bargain from within canada?* i've spotted some at play-asia and lik-sang, but as usual they come at a preminum.

* i'm sharing my single DS no more.

Why would you ever want a phat DS, man? It's so inferior to the Lite it's silly. If it's a matter of cost, just wait another month, save a little more cash. $cheap for a DS phat is $cheap thrown down the drain on an inferior piece of kit. Get a Lite, that's the way the DS was always meant to look! :)

seriously like wtf? How does the ds sell this well? What did Nintendo do to better market their product to the masses? I really just don't understand :p is there a particular formula to follow for such success or can it be attributed mainly to sheer luck?

This really makes me think that Nintendo can pull the Wii off. They've proven that they know how to innovate and not just produce a gimmick.

I'm seriously thinking about picking up a DS depending on how well the Opera browser does.

Because it's a unique, smart piece of hardware with - most of all - a whole bunch of great games for it. Some of them being very unique and smart themselves.

It's not sheer luck, but rather courage to dare make and support a product like that, and some great brainstorming to come up with a number of ORIGINAL titles with gameplay that hasn't been seen before - or at least not in the shape you get it on the DS.

yeah fair enough, now that I think about it the video game market has been starved for orignality as of late, I guess the DS capatilizes on this. I expect the Wii will as well.

pssst! i can't allow to be seen in public with a nintendo, so my plan is once people's memories of the fat ds get blurry enough then i can play in public and delude people into thinking it's that uber cool new ms' ipod killer ; )

either that or i just like the fat one - and the gba cartridges fit just nicely in it ; )

What can I say? Girls are impressed by girth!

Nintendo reported a 10.2 percent increase in first-quarter net profit today, crediting the healthy earnings to the success of the Nintendo DS Lite and hit games for the system, such as Brain Age and New Super Mario Bros.

During the quarter Nintendo sold 4.54 million DS units -- three times more than the 1.38 million sold a year before. Software sales for the system were even more impressive: Nintendo sold 18.4 million DS game titles in the first quarter, compared to 5.3 million in the same period last year.

All told, the Nintendo DS has sold more than 21 million units since it debuted in November 2004. Nintendo expects to sell 17 million DS units in fiscal 2006.
...

For its first quarter ended in June, Nintendo's net income climbed to 15.6 billion yen ($134.3 million), above 14.1 billion yen last year. The company posted sales of 130.9 billion yen ($1.1 billion) for the quarter, an 85 percent increase from 70.7 billion yen in the same period last year.

Invigorated by the quarter's earnings, Nintendo has increased its annual net income forecast to 83 billion yen, above the previously forecast 65 billion yen.

Does anyone have comparative sales figures for the GBs? I'd like to see if DS is selling faster or similarly.

I remember a press release from Nintendo saying it was the fastest selling handheld ever. So I guess, it still is.

2 years and DS outsells Gamecube. Congratulations, Nintendo.

Nothing says "Word up yo yo yo I'm an OG early adopter homeslice" like my DS Fat.

It's a nice handheld and all but...all this success!? For games i could play on the internet with the exception of Mario 2.5D.

Your point that you're trying to make doesn't work unfortunately when you exaggerate in this manner. There are lots of unique games on DS (or with unique DS-centric features) that are not available off the internet. Trauma Center, Phoenix Wright, Nintendogs, Another Code, MP Hunters etc.

Well i was talking about games that played in a similar fashion. Those games you've listed are good, not great and doesn't warrant such success.

Except a laptop won't fit in your pocket, and who wants to play a crappy Flash-based knockoff of Advance Wars or Castlevania?

These are the first ranked DS games, according to http://www.gamerankings.com/

Mario Kart DS
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
New Super Mario Bros
Meteos
Kirby: Canvas Curse
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Super Mario 64 DS
Tetris DS
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Metroid Prime: Hunters

Where on Internet could i play these games (except tetris and meteos) ? and nintendogs, wario ware, rub the rabbits, phoenix wright..

Apparently you don't know what you're talking about..

And playing with a notebook on an internet access would be far less practical than playing with a DS, isn't it ?
