20GB version PS3 pricecut: 59800 yen -> 49980 yen and HDMI added!

It might not be THE reason, but it's undeniable that Sony can see that their competition have MUCH cheaper platforms. We're not talking about a little bit, we're talking about almost half the price. Sony knows that if there is anyone who can hurt them in Japan, it's Nintendo, especially now that they seem to have a lot of momentum.

So, it is definitely one of the reasons. Would Sony lower the price if they didn't have such fierce competition?

Well, Microsofts Core console is much cheaper and comes with a JRPG in Japan for $250.

... And it still selling really badly.

As i said, if there is anyone who can hurt Sony in the short term, it is Nintendo.
Long term, MS might just get their act together and become more strong in Japan, but it will take time.

The difference between MS and Nintendo in Japan is that Nintendo have a console at a very competitive price coming out which people actually seem to want to buy. That's what will hurt Sony, certainly not Core X360's.

This is a fantastic thread, it has weekly sales figures from 2003 till today, and it's always updated. This is only for Japan, mind you. Shows how much the DS Lite is dominating, absolutely amazing sales, showing that price in certain cases doesn't matter, since now PSP is actually slightly cheaper than the DS there...

Sounds great :) I like how they suddenly confuse everyone now that the 20gb model is fully upgradable to the premium and suddenly puts it in a much better position to compete with the premium 360. Unfortunately now a lot of people have to reconsider their purchasing decisions (chrome or not to chrome...)

On the other hand how much sense does it make to upgrade the 20gig sku now that they announced that its going to be only 20% of the units out there....and why do this when in Japan theres only going to be 100k units :?:

Except we're not doing console comparisons this week. Move along, move along. . .

@ london-boy..

not to mention XB1 was dead in Japan and (so far) X360 is selling half the amount XB1 does (and remember X360 didn't have any competition at this time whereas XB1 was up against PS2 and GC!).

here's a great site and it shows various sales and also allows you to compare console v console...

http://www.vgcharts.org/

example X360 v XB1 in Japan...

http://www.vgcharts.org/japconscomps.php?name1=X360&name2=XB&type=2

hours of fun!

Wow that is one great site, the realtime chart system thing is great! Shame it doesn't have older consoles, i'd have loved to see how some older consoles sold compared to today's ones...

Most excellent news. The inclusion of HDMI in the $499 pack means effectively a $100 price drop for me - 20GB pack will undoubtedly be the wise choice now.

Prediction: Supply on the 20 GB model will be very, very limitted.

Reducing the price on the 20GB model and adding HDMI is not about making the PS3 more affordable, but about winning the PR war.

Sony can say our basic model is fully featured and at a new low price.

Nevermind that it will be available in very low numbers. They claim 80-20 split, but it wouldn't surprise me if it were an even higher split for the premium version.

This is just like MS with their two SKUs, except in reverse. The MS premium was hardly available, but the core was. You could buy the core and upgrade to the core by spending alot more then just by purchasing the core.

Now the Sony premium will be readily available, but the basic will not be, but Sony will still be able to claim a lower price point.

It wouldn't surprise me if by next E3 both MS and Sony phased out the basic versions.

They claim 80-20 split

They don't, actually, and they haven't given any indication of the split at launch. That ratio was what retailers were saying would be appropriate (but of course, that may change now).

At launch I'd expect lots of 60GB, but it'll be interesting that it'll likely be the "second choice" for most people, as the core pack was for 360. Overtime I could see the 20GB pack becoming the predominant unit, as volumes ramp and they get costs under control.

Magic Box is the only one reporting that so far though... we need further confirmation IMO.

Didn't someone from Sony said that there would be more of the premium SKU because polls/surveys showed that this SKU was the one people wanted ? In light of the lower price and HDMI in core SKU, I can see those survey results changing...

Wii is the direct reason for the price drop, anyone thinking it had anything to do with the 360 is crazy. More than twice the cost of the Wii was stupid in Japan, the market isn't a lock for them anymore. I think Sony is finally coming to realise the serious issues they might have with a potentially dominant competitor in Japan. About time too, they were swanning along like nothing was wrong.

One only needs to see the absolutely amazing sales of the Nintendo DS compared to the PSP to understand how things can go wrong for Sony in Japan.

If Nintendo can show some really amazing games like they have on DS, they'll be laughing all the way to the next-next generation.

Can you tell me what incentive Sony has for selling more of the basic SKU this year over the premium?

They have a limited supply that they are gauranteed to sell out through March at least the very least.

I highly doubt Wifi and a bigger HD add $100 of cost to the premium version. I bet the premium version loses less money then the basic. It would be bad business to sell more of the basic SKU.

Since, they're going to sell out no matter what, might as well flood the market with the $599 version, but blast the PR trumpet of "it's only $439" (or whatever is the US equivalent). They'll get enough people who wanted the basic to "upgrade" to the $599 version when they only see that one the store shelf.
