20GB version PS3 pricecut: 59800 yen -> 49980 yen and HDMI added!

with Japan prices being dropped all most 100 on both configurations, I think its only a matter of time before a US Press announcement is issued. If US and EU dont get price drops, I can imagine quite an riot umoung all of us in the US/EU buying a ps3.

Why? 360 is considerably cheaper there too, most consumers will be totally clueless.

Shamelessly stolen from teamxbox:

So is this a hope killer for a lower PS3 price in the US(after all I have to get my GT:HD fix...)?

Maybe. And ok, Japan you deserve it.

As long as I get my base PS3 w/HDMI, it's all good...

From 1up

UPDATE: SCEA told 1UP that the price drop in Japan for the 20 GB version of the PlayStation 3 is exclusive to that territory and that the scheme for the U.S. pricing of the console would remain identical. $499 for the 20GB version of the console and $599 for the 60GB SKU. However, as previously reported, both versions now have HDMI.

I'm confuse, why can't they do the same for U.S. and Europe:?:

Wow that's discouragement. The US price was already cheaper than other regions
But HDMI in the 20GB version still remains.

Well, Sony is engaging an enemy in Japan who's seemingly willing to slash and burn the price at retail, who will be coming out with a equally cheap HD-DVD player add-on (vs Blu-ray), and who will be getting some strong RPG titles shortly.

So... if it had to be *one* territory, Japan makes sense. Better for them to take the threat seriously and do their best to make sure Microsoft doesn't establish a foothold than to take victory there for granted.

Suprised to see Sony getting all aggro. They are obviously taking MS and Nintendo seriously. I say so because Sony's general ambivalence is percieved as their biggest threat at the moment.

Go Sony. Kill.

well since this is Japan only, that's like taking a howitzer to kill a fly ;) (at least against MS, Id say this was more in fear of Wii).

or not

In the post-keynote Q&A, Kutaragi was quizzed....

When asked about the expensive nature of the PS3, Kutaragi somewhat bizarrely claimed that in the U.S., the $499 pricing had retailers and manufacturers happy at "such a great function for that price", trying to paint a picture where Europe was similarly happy, and it was only Japan (where the lower-spec model is 59,800 yen, and the higher-spec price up to retailers) that price came up as an issue.

He commented: "We set the price in other currencies and converted back to Japan", but there has been a change of heart, and he directly stated that the lower-price model will now be below 50,000 yen in Japan when it launches - presumably 49,980 yen, an effective 10,000 yen price cut for the machine.

edit:
woops... just saw the 1up post BB ;)

Is it an apology to the domestic market for shorting them?

This news is good for gamers, but it's just as puzzling as Sony PR has ever been. Which was the last console whose price dropped before it even launched?

I have to say though that the HDMI in the 20gb model is good news. For many, this distinction was the main reason over here to only consider the 60gb model a viable option, but this will effectively make the 20gb a viable option as well, which is a price-reduction in its own right - I'd consider the 20gb version having gone up about 50 euro/dollar in value because of this.

Anyone know if the $600 will have any good photo viewing options since it has memory card slots?

Now that HDMI is on both SKUs, trying to rationalize the price difference -- bigger HDD, Wifi, memory card slots.

It might be nice if you could plug in an SD card and have the photos displayed on 1080p, which is only about 2 megapixels. But that would be better than putting your photos downrezzed on a DVD (using iDVD).

I'm pretty sure thats possible, theres an old interface video somewhere where the sony rep is displaying photo's off the ps3 storage. Theres a bunch of options for displaying, including a slideshow of course. And if the psp is anything to go by, I think you will be able to set your wallpaper with your pictures as well.

But if you do end up going with the lower model, usb flash drives should still be possible as well.

Hmmm does this mean Sony will have to put a bigger HD and maybe 512MB XDRAM in the premium version and sell it as a computer/pvr/media center running Linux?
