20GB version PS3 pricecut: 59800 yen -> 49980 yen and HDMI added!

Minor redesign to the 20GB version (chrome PS3 logo)

So the only difference is HD size and WiFi?

Looks like they've decided to make the production a bit easier.

Good move!

My main question ultimately comes down to whether USB WiFi adaptors and USB card readers are supported out of the box. Hopefully this will be answered before launch rather than after...

And c'mon, where's the Linux news!

wowow only 335EURO for a 20gb ps3 with HDMI! i was already importing one from japan but now its a killer deal .

Any chance we will ever know what the real reason for adding the HDMI is?
Presumably because it's the most widely supported way to connect to 1080p displays. Looking at the XB360 1080p talk, there's concerns how many 1080 set owners can connect up the XB360. Lots of 'em don't have 1080p component support. Not only movies are 1080p, but we're hearing of a few games doing that too. If Sony really want to push 1080p (and sell more of their TVs) they need people to be able to connect their PS3's up to them, and it looks like HDMI is the connection of choice. If it only adds a few bucks, and simplifies production a little, it makes sense to me. And it drops the entry-level price considerably for those who were keen for HDMI. For games and movies, the low-cost PS3 is enough. The high-cost is for those who want the extra-and-as-yet-unknown production software and ancillary features.

Same here, if the base SKU incl a Wifi add-on is a lot cheaper, I'd go for the base unit now.

Heh... I guess i'm back on the train. A 20GB version with HDMI will be very nice and pretty much seals my decision... eventually...

I really wouldn't want Sony to cut the HDMI from the EURO PS3s though. Wouldn't be the first time they cut connections and features from European versions of their latest equipment (the Bravias for example). Fingers crossed!

I'm confused as hell right now...

- Ken Kutaragi announced that the 20GB version of PlayStation 3 will come with one HDMI port, and the 60GB version will have two HDMI ports for super letterbox display on side-by-side HDTVs. The 20GB version will be sold for 49980 yen in Japan on November 11, 2006.
"

thats gotta be a typo. dual hdmi is back?

Time for a price reduction for Xbox 360? $199 core $299 pro

I wonder how much would each unit sold cost them if they did so ?

As for the PS3 japanese price cut, i hope that we (EU) won't have to pay the price, if you read me ...
I hope that HDMI will still be there .. (for my 720p videoprojector)

Well they should atleast lower the price for europeans due to delay! However if PS3 REALLY is region free gaming, I'll be damned, I'll be the first one to import it from Japan. :)

Not sure. I'm wondering right now if the E3 price announcement maybe has something to do with a very clever PR trick. ;)

I think we might be in for a surprise.

*crosses fingers*

Well I sure hope so! If the price doesn't go down anywhere else I might have to consider getting it from Japan then, would probably still be around 200€ cheaper! :)

wow! did I just read a couple of times in this thread that Wii is the reason that Sony drops the price?
come on dudes, you are smarter than that !!!!

It might not be THE reason, but it's undeniable that Sony can see that their competition have MUCH cheaper platforms. We're not talking about a little bit, we're talking about almost half the price. Sony knows that if there is anyone who can hurt them in Japan, it's Nintendo, especially now that they seem to have a lot of momentum.

So, it is definitely one of the reasons. Would Sony lower the price if they didn't have such fierce competition?
