20GB version PS3 pricecut: 59800 yen -> 49980 yen and HDMI added!

So why would anybody get the premium now? Pay $100 for 40 GB more hard drive? On a console that supposedly can use generic hard drives anyway?

And if true, that 80/20 premium manufactoring split is basically going to be forcing people to pay $100 extra for those 80%, because it's much less desirable now.

I repeat: split sku's are stupid. I would eliminate the high end model altogether now.

This is kickass news btw, if it makes it to USA. It's basically $100 price drop as the tard pack is almost just as good as the premium. Moreso if they can hit 399 anytime soon, they will actually be a fathomable purchase for me.

Actually, I'm thinking the same thing too. Do they sell the chrome strip separately :)
...coz I really like the highlight. Otherwise, I'll just fake one myself.

My 0-day prediction: Price cut in the US as well. Us euro-peons get shafted again :devilish:
Would make a lot of sense for Sony I think.

I agree but it's a pipe dream. 1 SKU -$100 with HDMI? It's obviously a steal and too good to be true. Therefore it's not going to happen. I will say if it does happen they will fly off the shelves.

Hmm... something is still not right. The disparity between Premium and Core is too great now (in Japan at least). They are still playing chess with MS, aren't they ? Or have they finally lost it :D ?

Oh god shortages galore I forsee. Lower price then announced and less consoles to go around than initially planned.

Suprised to see Sony getting all aggro. They are obviously taking MS and Nintendo seriously. I say so because Sony's general ambivalence is percieved as their biggest threat at the moment.

Go Sony. Kill.

Short answer, we don't know but there is likely to be a little bit of an uproar if they don't atleast take a little off of the price.

I seriously doubt the price cut will make it's way to the U.S..

If so, I would expect a 50 dollar price drop on the 360 sku's to follow shortly after.

But this is good news for the Japanese after that abomination that was KK's keynote.
And if The hardware is region free..I will be geting a jp ps3, for sure.

with Japan prices being dropped all most 100 on both configurations, I think its only a matter of time before a US Press announcement is issued. If US and EU dont get price drops, I can imagine quite an riot umoung all of us in the US/EU buying a ps3.

Price drop and HDMI on base models is a very good move. HDMI will help convince the studios to stay with BR and it's better to drop the price now given that 65nm is round the corner than wait till next year when a price drop would make them appear desperate to compete with x360.

Shamelessly stolen from teamxbox:
UPDATE: SCEA told 1UP that the price drop in Japan for the 20 GB version of the PlayStation 3 is exclusive to that territory and that the scheme for the U.S. pricing of the console would remain identical. $499 for the 20GB version of the console and $599 for the 60GB SKU. However, as previously reported, both versions now have HDMI.

So is this a hope killer for a lower PS3 price in the US(after all I have to get my GT:HD fix...)?
