2007 major widespread Japanese publisher support for XB360

We're as sober as the Pope. Watch and see how other Japanese publishers react. Mark our words here: Other publishers, other big-name Japanese publishers aside from Capcom (how we love thee, Capcom), will begin putting their once Sony exclusives on Xbox 360. And, in some cases, they'll put them on Xbox 360 first. Don't believe us? Watch for Namco and Konami in 2007. We're still not certain whether Metal Gear Solid 4 will hit Xbox 360, but if numbers (of units sold) do the talking, count on its arrival to Xbox 360 sometime after the PS3 version. What about Namco? We're sworn to secrecy, but the tide is changing here too. Prepare for some real Namco hardcore gaming love in 2007. Overall, Sony has reacted with alarm, anger, confusion, and is now realizing it must deal with this new situation: It isn't the console leader anymore. Oh yeah, almost forgot. Then there are Mistwalker's Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, two highly anticipated Japanese RPGS exclusive to the console. And, oh yes, did somebody say something about Resident Evil 5?

Hard to believe that the japanese dev & publishers are gonna support 360 instead of ps3, knowing that ps3 its gonna sell 10 times more than 360 in japan.

I don't think it's one or the other - more like both. Also I'm sure they realize it's a smart business to take the rest of the world in consideration when designing their games to expand their potential sales.

A lot of those games are going to get sold in the States and Europe as well.

If they can't make enough money off Japan alone, and the PS3 install base in other countries are not that great, then I would think they have not much of a choice besides put the game on another system

I do think that if nintendo had a system closer in power and architecture to the PS3 then they probably would skip the xbox 360

Exactly.

The Japanese publishers are going to be multi-platform with their titles. PS3 will only get exclusives if Sony pays for them.

What major exclusives are on the cards then? All I can think of are MGS and Tekken. MGS I think very unlikely. Tekken seems possible, which would be a big deal I think and along with VF5, would make XB360 a good fighter platform. As for XB360 having a couple of exclusive JRPGs...PS3 has its own too. Perhaps you've heard of a little game called Final Fantasy :p

So...um...the story here is 3rd party games are more likely to be cross-platform? Is that shocking to anyone?

Fan***tastic

MS has some fantastic dev support this gen. And their exclusives are making/will make a lot of people sit up and take note.

How do you console yourself if you're a hardcore Sony fan? I think a lot of people think that Sony's 1st parties will help differentiate the PS3 (of course that can be said for any console!). I don't wanna jump on the bandwagon of the senior and more insightful members at B3D but the age of the 3rd party exclusive is almost dead.

Anyway, if you look at it up to this point we've got Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm and Warhawk for a start. (I'm not talking about released games, just games that we know about.) Things can only get better. This gen is absolutely fascinating.

Well...maybe they did? Maybe Sony execs were seen running out of Sony HQ with arms in the air, looking lost, stamping their feet, and crying out 'what are we going to do?!'...

I'm sure a journalist wouldn't write it if it wasn't true. :yep2:

IIRC, Namco and Konami already released these games on Xbox 360 (RR6, PES, Rumble Roses, etc etc). What's new here?

If you look at the sales for 'traditional' games in JPN, this should come as no surprise.

Exactly that can not be stated enough. The PS2 should of been a money printing machine the last 18 months in japan but has not been. There is a super large PS2 user base in japan that is not buy games. The money that used to go for traditional consoles is clearly going to hand helds and other electronic devices.

On the other hand games on consoles keep selling well in the west. The 360 is seeing record attach rates and software is selling damn well.

The 360 owners should be proud of themselves the act of buy so many games has caught the attention of every 3rd party there is. It is not what MS or sony have done that will get some of the former PS3 exclusives on the 360 it is the 360 owners who have lots of disposable income and use it to buy games. It would be foolish for a 3rd party to ignore a user base of millions who buy lots of software. The only way a 3rd party could justify a exclusive for now is either money from MS/sony or the game is something that will only sell in the east where the 360 is weak.

I can't wait to see the PS3 attach rate 6 months from now. Will it be the same kind of user base the 360 has that buys games or will it be the user base the PSP has that is more into the secondary fuctions isntead of gaming. By including so many secondary fuctions sony could very well be shooting themselves in the foot with people buying the system as a media device first and a gaming machine second. I can see why 3rd partys would hedge thier bets with the cost of game development sky rocketing.

Honestly this is the best, most accurate, most concise analysis I have seen in many months.

Home theater newsletter had a brief article in an email describing the difference in approach by the two companies. Quickly, its that no one knows what the actual function of PS3 sales is for (BluRay? Games?) Whereas every 360 can be counted on for games and every HD-DVD attachment is definitively for HD-DVD. The credit really does go to the 360 owner(s) for this latest turn of market events...

Agh, not again the "Blu-ray is useless for games" story. There are people who want more than the lowest-common denominator.

Technically those are second party

I don't think I said they were 1st party. But I can see why you said it. Thanks. :)

I've seen the differences pointed out a few times around here and to all intents and purposes it doesn't make a great deal of difference. Not to my perception at least.

It's reassurance they won't just release games on the PS3. Knowing that developer sentiment in Japan is strong, that makes a 360 a more compelling platform investment from a consumer perspective. I don't recall Tekken, Ace Combat, or Virtua Fighter appearing on any other platform but the PS2 on last generation hardware. For many that don't own a 360, this knowledge makes the 360 platform more appealing.

Microsoft X-Box 1 hardware had paltry Japanese developer support. For fans of Halo and Fable I'm sure this is music to their ears, that they'll also have the option to choose AAA games from the likes of Capcom, Konami, Namco, and SEGA.

I think he meant that people may be buying the PS3 because it's the cheapest blu-ray movie player out, and if thats the case the attach rate for games is not going to be so high, I don't think he was talking about games at all

actually, my bad, its late here in norway, and when i read your post i thought you initally meant that those were 3rd party...
