But it's nice to see that we're finally going to mature into all RT into the near future, it has taken some time for adoption, and understandably, but the future of games will be better for it.
I don't know what to do after this phrase. Laugh because this will be true, or laugh because this will not happen and games will become even worse in general and then cry because of that. :)
 
Yea, we're 6 years of RT hardware now, it's good to finally see some of these titles come out with this type of thing.
Though I suspect Indy is probably the limit here, it runs on Series S, which is perfect, because that's likely going to be the limit for handhelds in the future.

But it's nice to see that we're finally going to mature into all RT into the near future, it has taken some time for adoption, and understandably, but the future of games will be better for it.
these are the advantages of having a tailored engine specifically made with very precise and certain features in mind. They can get away with "forcing" the user to have RT by default yet the performance is really good.

In that sense, the generalist engines -Unity, Mono, Godot, UE etc- meant to run everywhere have a much harder time, that's the difference I find.

Indy even runs on the Steam Deck.

It won't happen overnight for sure. lol.

It's a super long process for hardware and software to continually improve and to get more performant. Once it's highly performant, over time, game design will begin to accomodate for dynamic environments and events - as that is the largest beneficiary of runtime calculated lighting - games no longer need to operate in a static way. To be able to work with complex lighting setups without fear that things will break. This combined with being able to retrieve assets on demand, allows you to do some interesting things like destructible terrain, imagine a building collapsing, or a mine shaft collapsing on you, but the lighting is reflective of what's happening at that time of day.

Will it be a massive change? No. It's largely going to be an evolution over time. I don't think we'll ever see a revolution in gaming and immersion unless you're jumping into something like VR.

But all games could benefit from RT, even cell shaded games.
 
Can you be more specific please. Because I don't understand what are you talking about.
You mentioned that Stalker, Hellblade and Indiana jones comprise your top 3 graphics of the gen so far? I just meant I don't agree with that assessment. Particularly with all the visual issues in Stalker. It's completely unfinished. Reference the Digital Foundry video. Stalker has it's moment though but it's whole package cannot be in a top anything list of graphics for me.

I meant what games quality already a lot lower that some years ago, not all games, but most of them. And situation will be worse in coming years.

I understood your message, but didn't understood what exactly you don't like. Can't agree what Stalker is completely unfinished. This is to strong word. Completely is when not all quests completed, not all NPC placed, not all locations finished etc. Stalker was released and game was ready. Some minor fixes needed, but now after patch game is playable, I already have spent ,ore than 30 hour in that game, and after patch there is no problems. At least I haven't seen any.
But graphics level, geometry level, texture resolution, foliage, landscape, ground is just top tier, better only in Hellblade 2. So this 3 games for me for now in top 3 in terms of graphics. What can you name what is better? Can't immagine anything. TLOU Remake, very good, but not on same level, Stellar Blade, very good, but in comparison to HB2 it's not even close. Same with Wukong. FF7 Rebirth looks good, but games looks more like PS4 game, and falls short in comparison to FF16. FF16 also was very good, completed that last year, but when I first turned on HB2 I already understood what FF16 doesn't look so great anymore. What else? Hogwarts Legacy not even close, COD MW3 or COD BO 6 also far behind. Many games released in last two years are still cross gen and can't compete. Sony first party are on vacation and when will release something pure PS5 we didn't even know. They didn't even announced at least 1 top tier PS5 exclusive. This is ridiculous. Just half year ago they looked like they are on horse, but now MS release game after game and already have good lineup for 2025. This is they momentum. But we will se what will be in next 5-6 months.

Yea, it definitely may feel like that, but if we look into the problems, I think you're just seeing a compounding of issues that over time gets sorted out.
UE5 gets a bad reputation because most studios looking to adopt it are trying to churn out content as quick as possible, they aren't looking to get into engine work, and that's going to be a performance problem once the game developers start putting in more than the stock engine was meant to handle.

And then we get into discussions around feature sets, how well they are plumbed, the level of optimization, time, and it can be very challenging. RT and all these new next gen features require a serious amount of work to integrate properly into these engines, and we saw a lot of half baked games get released during covid.

I do get the fear, but I think we've rounded the worse corner in terms of performance. I suspect things are going to get better from this point forward.
 

First GPU (aside from some used 3060 12GB) that is better than a full price PS5 in a similar price range custom PC build.
4 years for that 🫠

If you don't care about consoles simplicity of set up and use it's a no brainier.

The only unknown are if Intel is going to support their gpu's in the long term (who knows what Intel is going to be, even 6 months from now).

probably the best performance per dollar of any modern GPU by a long distance
 
I hope it sells well. This is far below my preferred performance tier, but I wish it good results.
Agreed, if there's not issues that will come back on me I am going to put 2 of these in some cheap builds for my nephews in the new year. I picked up a couple of 12400f cpus for cheap the other day, these could turn out way better than I was hoping for with the budget i'm working with thanks to these gpus.
 
Good! Business has gotten used to fat margins and insane profits in recent years. Proper competition makes that impossible, so it's basically been an abuse of market conditions. The market needs a proper reset to get multiple players offering comparable, competing products, or you'll just drive bigger monopolies and poorer value for consumers and larger conglomeration.

(The flip side of this is too much competition driving prices and profit margins too low, to negative, which rubs out businesses and jobs and creates unrealistic expectations in consumers)

They are eating margins to try and penetrate the market, that factor shouldn't be ignored.

They’re also doing it at a significant perf/mm and perf/watt disadvantage. They’ve gotta address those issues if they hope to maintain their value proposition long term.
 
It's good that Intel is still big enough to afford these, but I worry about Intel's condition in the near future might prevent them from doing this. It'd be very unfortunate (and stupid IMHO) if Intel decides to leave this market.

AI (companies speining money) har more money thant consumers...get used to it.
I just installed hardware for ~$1.000.000 this week, buying power matters.

Windows 95 imho was the peak of Microsoft. It made Windows what became later. The best is maybe Windows 2000/XP/7 but Windows 95 was made with good taste: the interface, the songs included, etc.

This was one of the videos included with the CD. I hated the whores pimp dancing by the end, and the song is too posh but watching video on your PC at the time from a file was really nice.
