Consistant / Reliable European / Other sales data source?

Well by the whole region they might mean Europe in general. Sure in individual countries maybe the PS3 is more popular but put them all together and overall the 360 might be selling better. The better PS3 sales in smaller countries might be enough to be enough to overtake better 360 sales in bigger countries, e.g. UK...

Yeah but on Gamekyo (maybe its semantics and the fact that I'm not a native English speaker) you can read this

Microsoft announced today that Xbox 360 sales surpass PlayStation 3 in all European countries since three weeks, according to GfK-ChartTrack sales numbers. 7 million of Xbox 360 have been sold in Europe since December 2005.

PAL territories include Australia, New Zeeland, the middle east and various other places. SCEE != Europe.

According to Eurogamer 360 leads Ps3 by 1million in main euro markets.

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=344133

Xbox 360 currently has a combined lead over PlayStation 3 of around one million sales across five key European territories - the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
That's according to GfK Chart-Track data seen by Eurogamer that shows like-for-like sales of console hardware across October and November.
The installed base totals suggest that Sony is catching up on Microsoft, which launched Xbox 360 over a year earlier than PS3.
But following a price cut in September, Microsoft's figures have jumped and the platform holder can be confident of holding its lead into the New Year....more...

Does it lead in all those European countries ? Because I have the feeling that the difference has been made for the biggest part in the UK. Can't imagine that the 360 in Italy or Spain have a lead on the PS3.

IIRC XB360 had a million unit headstart or thereabouts in the UK but PS3 led overall in the PAL territories. I don't think XB360 has gained the ascendency in Europe overall yet, unless there has been a marked change since the price drop.

The latest announcements do imply that there has been a marked change since the price drop. The question is whether it will be sustained.

I know vgchartz is questionable, but they have the 360 doing stellar sales in Europe+Other in recent weeks, exceeding the 360's North American sales.

I would have thought so, given that MS talked in percentage terms about its increase in console sales since its price-cut.

From some PR French declarations from Nintendo, Sony, MS you have for the France this situation, probably in the end of October, not sure that November is include.
Because 360 was 750 000 in September, and MS announced 22K/ week after price cut.

So,
Wii: 2,2 M
PS3: 1M
360: 0,8M

In September, ChartTrack (the same source as "seen" but not quoted by Eurogamer) said the 360 had a 900k unit lead over the PS3 in the UK. The latest 360 price cut also hit in mid-September, so there's two and a half months of that to take into account too. LINK.

So to say that the 360 has "around 1m lead" over the PS3 across those 5 countries is a bit misleading, as pretty much all of that lead is down to the UK. But then, their headline is "Xbox 360 leads PS3 by 1m in Europe", and they've left 45 countries out to start with :D

It does tell us that LTD sales across France, Germany, Italy and Spain must be pretty much neck-and-neck though.

That would be an astonishing turn of events for Microsoft. Last year's top ten Christmas games in Spain and Germany (probably others) didn't include a single Xbox 360 title. I wonder how it will be different this year.

MS just cherry picked data to make the 360 look good. Yeah, European sales look great if you have decided not to count all the countries where the sales aren't very good.

They "cherry picked" the top 5 countries that represent 90% of all video game purchasing in Europe. Does it really matter how it fared in the remaining countries of Europe? Now, Sony lumps a very large part of the world in with Europe when it makes sales announcements about this region, but even so, those sales will be dwarfed by the "big 5" European countries.

There has been a MS PR? For me all of these is based on Eurogamer statement/news.
I can see how Ms is involved in this. The situation for France is irrelevant for the big picture.
The big point is Eurogamers saw figures from reliable sources which give us better clues about the overall situation in Europe.

impossible
check the weekly software sales figures here they are recent ones
we have a grand total of
0 xbox360 titles vs 9 ps3 titles
its a similar story week after week, now if the consoles sales figures in those territories were similar then u would not have a 0 vs 9 score

btw this data can be gotten from www.gfk.de .fr.it etc

here in nz (+ oz is similar) its a different story the xbox360 is doing similar to even better than the ps3

It's enough that MS can't simply crow about their success across the whole region, isn't it? The fact is that their sales advantage in those five countries is basically nullified by their disadvantage in the rest of Europe.

Why exactly is that a fact? Can you provide some link to official data that supports your argument? Or has it just been pulled out of thin air?

It's another PR roundabout just like back in April (summary link). One side claims one thing, the other claims something else, they both use clever language to make it sound more impressive but reality falls somewhere between the two.

You can rest assured that if there was an unarguable lead across Europe falling out of the GfK numbers for either party, they'd be pretty quick to make a song and dance about it.

Besides, one has been on sale in Europe for 151 weeks (December 2, 2005), the other for 91 weeks (March 23, 2007), so outright lead here is a moot point to all but the people who write the corporate gloating.
