XBox One and Windows 10 Programs [UWP, X0, W10]

I think this is the right place to post this
despite all the talk of uwp games running on the x1 and pc
microsoft are also commited to releasing games excusive to xb1 and games exclusive to pc

In his latest interview with Major Nelson, Xbox’s Phil Spencer stated that Microsoft will release some exclusives games to the PC in the future.
I know a lot of people looked at our early PC launches and they said <>. And we know today’s games will take two-three years to actually go build a good game. I look at Halo Wars 2, I think it’s a good PC game. But you know, let’s be honest; a genre that started on the PC as RTS, that we on Halo Wars 1 took it over to console, and now with Halo Wars 2 we’re shipping on both platforms. And people see that and they are like<> <>. And we are going to say yes. But I’ll say in the long run Windows is incredibly important to Microsoft, and gaming is one of the most vibrant activities that happens on the Windows platform, and the Xbox team now runs gaming for Microsoft. Gaming on PC is something that we are committed to, we’re gonna have more things to talk about. We’re gonna have games only released on the PC. We’re gonna have games only released on console. And PC gaming is critically important to the company

was just thinking that I could've been wrong, just because re7 is play anywhere, that doesnt mean its a uwp game.
probably just uses the xpa api's?
x1 doesn't get full uwp game support until later this year.

In the windows store I could either find Android type-shovelware, or games which were already out on Xbox.
Does anyone know any non-Xbox high profile game (not available on Android Phones) which is UWP?

If you mean UWP games that don't also have an Xbox version, then I don't think so.

If you mean UWP games that won't run on the XBO, then yes. COD: Infinity War in the Microsoft Store is technically a UWP game. However, it's a Win32 game with a UWP wrapper, IIRC. ROTR, Dead Rising 4, Quantum Break and a few others are native UWP games in the Microsoft Store that won't run on the XBO.

I imagine that the Play Anywhere announcement coincided with the UWP development environment getting to the point where it was universal with regards to it being able to run on console as well as PC.

Publishing a game on the Microsoft Store, Publishing a game on Xbox, and writing a (version of a) game using UWP that can run on both platforms could very well also each be individual decisions.

Thank. My apologies, I though you could get Portal and Half-Life and Crysis and such games on the windows Store, and that you could play those on Xbox One hardware, but I overrated the windows store catalog.

Yeah, up about a year or two ago, Microsoft would not allow AAA games into the Windows Store. Games had to be below X size. Games had to be "family friendly." Etc. The rules for getting accepted into the MS store at that time were oriented more towards mobile-type users (phones, tablets, etc.). So load times had to be low (size requirement) and casual audiences were the main target (family friendly content).

Once they started changing the focus of the Windows Store, they opened it up to AAA games as well as mature rated games. Reception from non-Microsoft AAA developers was tepid at best.

The catalyst to get them interested in publishing to the Windows Store was likely due entirely to Project Scorpio (and to a lesser extent XBO) running UWP games. Hence the recent release of COD: Infinity War (Activision royally screwed up on this one) to test the store and the Play Anywhere release of RE7.

It still remains to be seen whether it'll be widely adopted by publishers. But at least we're starting to see a trickle of non-MS Play Anywhere titles in the store.

The big take away for me with this announcement, is perhaps a shifting wind in the way games are announced. If more and more games are looking to become announced followed by <12 months for sale date, we've got some great potential for games post e3, especially if you're an xbox guy feeling like you've been living in some drier climates.

I prefer this method because it significantly lowers the chances of 'cancelled' projects and delayed projects.

Yep. I think 1 year from release is a good amount of time to do promotion. Indie titles can be especially bad. Still waiting for Below to get released ... My expectations are incredibly low at this point.

also...is this the first game that is specifically announced for Scorpio? I think it is.
First unannounced game ;)
I think we're pretty sure of some future franchises already, and I imagine there is some expectation of MS going back to post patch their games to support Scorpio.

I think it's pretty safe to say that any of Microsoft's current Play Anywhere titles will work on Scorpio without the need for a patch. The download for Scorpio will just automatically including the settings file for either the XBO (already exists) or Project Scorpio (might already exist or waiting for final hardware specs) depending on which one it is downloaded on.

I'm going to assume that Capcom's RE7 is also similarly ready for Project Scorpio at this point. Again, just needing a Project Scorpio settings file for the graphics preset.

What is going to be interesting is older UWP games that aren't Play Anywhere. For example, Quantum Break. Will it use the XBO code on Project Scorpio or will it use the UWP code on Project Scorpio? Or will they update the engine for the newer and more universal UWP? Yes, yes, I know redundant, but the newer UWP "is" more universal than the older UWP. :p
