XBox Next Naming Convention

They didn't want to call the XB360 the XB2 and have it on the shelves next to the PS3 because it would be numerically inferior. So they matched the PS3 number and rationalised the choice with some additional digits and some totally unexplainable reasoning as to why 360. Full circle? Yeah, right! We're not back at Pong, we ain't gone full circle!

I know this, I said as much in my first post ;) :p

Though my lifestyle suggestions are very tongue-in-cheek, I do think they'll go that route. They'll be looking at Wii and seeing how much sense that makes from a broader audience POV. Shed the ties of a limited brand-name, the existing fans of whom will already know that the new machine is the next XB iteration, and come up with something hip and more inclusive to attract a broader demographic. Just as they did with their OS brand.

I'm not completely sold on shedding the XB brand altogether, but your reasoning is sound.

Well, it's not a certainty that the PS4 will be named PS4.

Only in the sense that nothing in life is certain.

The number 4 is associated with death in several Asian cultures (of which Japan is one), and although I can't remember whether discussion on that matter has taken place before here on this board that you can search through, I know I've participated in a number of discussions on the matter in recent years. It'll be interesting to see what they do in terms of naming the next PS.

You do raise an interesting point. How jingoistic is Sony then becomes the question.

I think if you familiarize yourself with the importance of numbers in Asian cultures, then you'll realize I'm not implying jingoism at all. You wouldn't call a console released in NA the Playstation "bullshit" after all, would you? It's a similar thing.

Anecdote: I was buying a Japanese tea set for a friend who was getting married and was going to buy a set of four; I was told by an advisor on the scene that I must absolutely not do that, because it was their wedding and a set of four would have been considered an ill omen. So I bought them two. Seven or eight on the reverse would have been considered good luck though.

I'm not saying that Sony won't name it the PS4... but if they are looking to break from the consecutive numbering pattern, that will be the time that they go for it.

I meant no disrespect, perhaps I should've used another term. Jingoism was the best I could come up with at the time and what I meant by it was this:

Would Sony actually go so far as to change the naming convention of their Playstation family to be respectful of the superstitions of a single market? I know it's the home market and all, but I think you'll find the power of the Playstation brand (and people's desires) simply outweighs any superstition.

I know what you meant, but it's the idea that the significance goes beyond superstition that I'm trying to convey.

Whether it's just the home market or not as well will depend on if China is seen as a viable market for consoles at that point or not also. If it is, they're not going to want to enter with that name, believe me. But even beyond that, since you point to the Playstation brands strength, wouldn't it just make more sense to call the next PS Playstation Hive (or whatever) and have the West accept it rather than the contrary? I don't care if it's called PS4, PS Network, PS Sorcery, or whatever... but if there are some people that care, well, certainly I don't have a problem with Sony deffering to that sensitivity. I don't see what you think they lose by losing the numbers such that to do so would be viewed as some sort of failure of reason; if the name that replaces it is a good one, isn't it better all around?

Do you think Microsoft would name a console Xbox 666?

I have always thought that the 360 signified "Revolution"...360 degrees is one full "Xbox Revolution". As for it's next name, I doubt it will include any numbers at all. If they choose to stay with their circular theme/exponential aspect of console generations they might call it the "Xbox Orb".

I'd Suggest Xbox 1080. Two reasons for that. 1080 cause that's 'real' HiDef, and also because 1080 has links to various 'cool' sports.

Carl is absolutely correct on this. It's like trying to sell the car Nova in Latin America or in France. The number 4 sounds almost like the word death.

Beside, I'm assuming they would one up this generation and do 5D instead of 4D. ;)

For the time being, I'm calling it "Nextbox", but I agree it'll be an Xbox <blank> type of thing, where it'll be lifestyle-fun-extreme-open-casual in nature, like "Xbox Green"or "Xbox Pure" or something. *shrug*

Not sure about the next xbox, but I think the next Playstation will be just
PLAYSTATION
no number 4, or some made up word, just
PLAYSTATION
with a model number like PS-X8000
Like most AV gear is named.
Well, I'm not sure about this either ;)

Maybe xbox, having gone the full 360 circle, goes back to xbox too.

People will then just talk about them as "the new xbox," and "the new Playstation"
Marketing would just be by the brands xbox and playstation.
If they keep (bring back) the backwards compatibility, it would even make some sense.

Or, they scrap the old names altogether and come up with something totally new.

I've always thought the next one would be called XBOX Revolution or something like that, but somebody connected revolution with 360 degress so maybe not. I'm pretty sure it will be a word though... maybe XBOX Reliable :devilish:

No, the idea was 360 was a digital gaming/entertainment/lifestyle/wtfever circle with "you the gamer" at the center, or some such marketing BS.

I dont think they'll pick a wii-ish name for 360 succesor, unless they intend to go the Wii route, which I dont think they will.

I'm not sure they'll ditch the names Xbox, or Playstation, because those names have jillions of dollars in past marketing causing widespread name recognition tied into them. Brand recognition is a extremely cultivated thing.
