Last month we brought you friends management for My Xbox®. A lot of you wrote in to tell us thanks for giving you the ability to send, receive, accept, and reject friend requests on Xbox.com (see sidebar). But some of you weren't shy about wanting even more. Many of you wrote in with messages similar to this:
"Friends management is great, but the thing people actually want is to be able to send messages from their computer (just an idea). Keep up the good work."
—Darkstar ZX
In our unending quest to give our Xbox Live® members more of what they are asking for, we hereby unveil the My Xbox Message Center. Exactly what you've been requesting!
Here's the story on the coolness that is Message Center.
  • All My Xbox users (Xbox Live Silver and Gold users as well as those who just signed up here on Xbox.com) can now read text messages in the My Xbox Message Center. So someone can send you a message from their Xbox 360â„¢ console and you can read it on your PC.
  • Xbox Live Gold members can compose and send messages in the My Xbox Message Center. The character limit is the same as on the Xbox 360 console: 250 characters.
  • Xbox Live Gold members can send messages (up to 200 per day) to gamers who are on their friends list.
  • Xbox Live Gold members can send messages (up to 25 per day) to other gamers not on their friends list.
  • All My Xbox users can block communications with other gamers. Designate a gamertag as blocked and you won't get any more messages from them. Change your mind? Unblock a gamer simply by sending them a message.

So, how about the IMPORTANT stuff, such as being able to download stuff while, say, watching a movie for example?!

Messages schmessages. I can't believe how screwed up MS's priorities are.

in time my good man... it's been promised. ;)

personally I like the messaging because I like to interact with my friends all the time whlle on my PC (to plan times to meet to play etc) without having to fire up the box, but your requested update is obviously one we all look forward to.

Dashboard team != Live community team

I expect the Dashboard update to be one of the E3 announcements.

One step closer to messaging between MSN messenger and XBL.

I think its only a matter of time before the "Live" platform encompasses 360 and PC with MSN messenger becoming the PC client for Live interaction.

This is cool though, and i think theyre moving in the right direction. Maybe next it will be video chat between 360 and PC owners next?

EDIT: Incidentally, wasnt there a promotional video at some point which showed people getting XBL messages on their cell phones? I think the idea was that you could send an invite to someone anywhere like "Hye we're playing Madden in 15 minutes." I wonder if thats stil on the horizon, i know you can send messages to cell phones via messenger if the recipient has configured it.
