The current XBox 360 WILL NOT be getting a new "built-in" HD-DVD player, however the new XBox "360" AV will.

This is a new unit, to exist alongside of the current XBox 360 line. New features:

Plays All XBox 360 titles
250 gb HD
HD PVR functionality
Live Anywhere support - Server Support
Wireless Hub "Built-In"
Built-In HD-DVD player
HDMI Output
Connection to other Live Anywhere "Xbox" Branded devices - even over internet.

Out for this Christmas to compete with Sony PS3 - pricing undetermined but within $100 of the PS3 is assumed. (Hopefully below)

Also look at this. It looks like a press release from Belkin.
This Switch easily solves the problem of insufficient HDMI inputs caused by the quick and widespread adoption of HDMI in the marketplace. High-definition components that commonly feature the HDMI connector include TVs, up-converting DVD players, cable/satellite boxes, entertainment computers, the newly released Blu-ray(R) and HD-DVD players, and upcoming game consoles, PlayStation(R) 3 and Xbox(R) 360 (HDMI connection to come). People who own multiple digital-video devices can avoid a bottleneck at the HDTV's single HDMI port with this Switch.

Sounds a bit too good to be true -- I'd sell my 360 and buy one of those if it was around the same price as a PS3 (after getting my PS3).

This sounds like a wishlist to me. Hd pvr? Why would they have this but no hdtv tuner/ card support?

250GB HDD? I assume 3.5" (wish both had gone with those anyhow). I wonder if it is removable and replacable with off the shelf items? (Kudos to Sony for this!) The HD PVR sounds nice, still not sold on HD DVD though (what happens when one of these formats dies... egads!) Sounds nice... too nice, so it wont happen ;) All we need now is a browser and Windows support

Yep, sounds like a wish list to me as well.

So is this kinda like the panasonic gamecube and PSX? The AVS forum thread makes it seem like a entirely different product. Though I assume if this rumor is true, MS would make this avaliable in more regions than the previously mentioned were.

Sounds like the early PS3 rumors =o

It isn't really practical without, at very least, some sort of video inputs (and then you still need an HD Tuner seperate, and that sort of makes it a pain because you'd have to change the channel on the tuner yourself, so it wouldn't even be able to do the "scheduled recording" part that makes DVRs so handy). If there was a tuner in there already then I don't see how this thing would be priced reasonably and I can only imagine this thing would end up being huge as well (if it was a 3.5inch drive like Acert mentioned that wouldn't help things either).

Aesthetically it would have to change to accomodate the 3.5 hdd but that doesn't bother me as I think it would be more fitting to stick to a standard 17" wide AV casing with this config. However the timing makes no sense. Why would they push this into a market which is primed to gobble up 360's this Christmas with a solid lineup and potentially big shortages of ps3 and Wii hardware? This would only serve to confuse the market and dilute their message.

I could see them releasing this in the spring after the die shrink to enable cost reductions and not dilute the market in the critical q4 buying period but even then it seems suspect. Perhaps they are readying this as a counter if ps3 does fly off the shelves.

if they were smart, they would make this AV thing with a removable face and clips so the drive could be changed or replaced. Then you could buy a hybrid drive and stick it in later or swap to the format that wins. however that won't happen.

Anyway you won't be seeing any 360 games coming on HD-DVD's.

That argument plays both ways.

What would be sweet is if they implemented a hybrid hd-dvd/bluray player in this box. If priced competitively, this would sweep the high-end market even if sold above the ps3 pricepoint as long as the quality of the internal av components were up to par. Problem would be price and availability but both could be a non-issue (comparitively) come this time next year. The av enthusiast does not want to waste money on not only the player but the movie library as well. If the player is high quality and both standards supported (and hopefully a stable hdmi standard exists by then) they will have an attractive piece of kit. Sort of a flip of the standard console acting as a movie player.

We'll see but the timing would have to make sense and the pricing/quality as well.

I'm confused.

You linked to an AVS thread that appeared to have nothing more than a wishlist of what somebody from an AVS forum would like in a 360 HD PVR, and then linked to a 1up article which I mistakenly assumed provided some sort of rumor mongering support for the AVS wishlist.

When actually, all the 1up article does is discuss the possibility of an HDMI port which we have an ongoing discussion in another thread about.

So how did we get from HDMI port on something that looks like it might be some version of the 360 motherboard, to a built-in HD-DVD player, HD PVR, 250gb HDD, wireless hub, etc.. to be launched this holiday season at a price around $100 of the PS3?

Personally, I'd like it to make Clams Casino and get me a cold beer every hour or so..

If BluRay fails, PS3's BRD drive will still serve high capacity games (unless they're never filled up!). If HDDVD fails, the HDDVD drive in XB360 VE (Vapourware Edition) would serve no useful purpose as there won't be any HDDVD games.

But in Sony's case it would be a bit more painful if no games truly utilitize BR media as this is a base cost limiter regardless of the medias success as a movie format.

Assuming theres a value-add in BR games of course...

EDIT: And what chef said...

EDIT2: Without a cablecard slot, HDPVR is very vague tho i recall a deal with directv at some point so they might be related, maybe over USB2?

That's assuming all games come on BR discs. Well according to the rumor if the formats failed you would still have a PVR. if it's a hypothetical situation there's beenfits to both.

Anyway I think the format the porn industry goes with will be the defecto standard, lol. Too many people like their Pr0n
