Xbox 2 In Motion
Someone who's seen an Xbox 2 game describes the wonder.
by Anoop Gantayat

March 1, 2005 - Final Fantasy father Hironobu Sakaguchi made a surprise announcement last week that his new development studio, Mistwalker, would be working with Microsoft on the development of two RPGs for the next-generation Xbox. Upon hearing the news, we immediately started imagining what we could expect from the new titles.

One individual far more privileged than team IGN Xbox was able to do more than just imagine. Sakaguchi gave Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Famitsu publisher Enterbrain and one of the most respected names in the Japanese videogame scene, a private first look at a video of the game in motion.

During a speech given at the Asia Online Game Conference 2005, Hamamura had this to say about the experience: "It's such a realistic video that with just one look you'll know that you're looking at a next-generation system. It's something that cannot be realized on today's machines."

Going into more details, Hamamura offered an example of what's possible on the next generation Xbox: "It's possible to show a camera outside the Earth's atmosphere approach a forest on the Earth's surface, then show leaves on a tree one at a time." Hamamura wasn't clear on if he'd seen this specifically in the Mistwalker footage, or if he was just giving an example of his own.

Regardless, this is an exciting view of things to come. Hopefully, we'll get to see what impressed Hamamura so much as Microsoft gets set to unveil the Xbox successor.

opps, excuse me for being captain obvious, of course this is more positive, being that its from IGN Xbox.

OMG.. it´s all about the FLOPS baby! :D

(hehe seriously, the comments sounded a little vague.. we want pics and clips goddamit!!) :D

the wait to see what Xbox 2 is all about is killin' me hahaha. and probably will have to wait til E3 to see anything being that all indications are no presence at GDC. maybe we'll see more XNA demos though.

This article does really say anything about the power of the system.

We don't know if these movies they are talking about are realtime or prerended.

That's not exactly the point. The point is that they're telling us that next gen machines will produce visuals that will look like next gen material... for real... and that all that stuff can't be done on PS2/Xbox............. Err.......... Which is dumber than saying "OMG the Earth is round!"

The same thing about procedural geometry was "envisioned" during the PS2-hype already. If I remember correct the talk was about going from Galaxies down to Trees - on "future" Consoles. Beat that :p

PS. sounds just about what Frontier - Elite 2 did over a decade ago, with alot more detail of course. *faints in hope of finally seeing Elite 4*

Funny thing is that it was done this generation, more or less. Dropship on PS2 was a GORGEOUS game that did that. So it "could" be done this generation, obviously not going down to singluar leaves but whatever.
Shame no one else abused of this possibility. Or maybe you just dont care to see every game starting from space, then going down all the way to the stadium in a football game... Just to give you an example.
Or starting from the moon and going down all the way to the stage you're gonna fight your fight in Tekken5...
I think it would become quite tedious.

Surely this isn't impressive? I mean, you load a world model, then as you zoom closer load a forest model, then closer load the tree model...

Really, saying a next-gen system is going to look better than a current gen isn't really mind-shattering news, but if you're going to give an example of what's impossible on current hardware, at least give a good example! Point instead to 100 soldiers sword fighting, fully boned and skinned, with a physics based combat system, and then you'll be talking next gen.

I think the quality of the implementation will be what matters. Specifically the detail and scale. I've seen demos like this before on PC, and usually something is lacking - often the scale is just totally wrong. Imagine passing through really nice 3D clouds, proper atmospheric light scattering, seamless and totally smooth LOD transitions etc. .

Anoop really jumped in his Captain Obvious suit before reporting this news. Next-gen consoles will do "stuff" that actual consoles can't...
