Witcher 2

Wow surprising number of people complaining about the quality and performance of the game...good thing I am still playing Mafia 2, gonna replay Witcher 1 and THEN use the saved games from that and continue this game so should be well over a few months before I actually fire up this game and play it in earnest. Hopefully they get all this stuff sorted out. It sucks for gamers who have pre-ordered their copies to just become beta testers...but such is the world of PC gaming I guess with all these various hardware and driver configurations.

So its confirmed that this games uses MLAA as a AA technique.

Anyone can make comparison with and without MLAA? And what about shimmering when moving, its a problem? MLAA affects textures?

I'm so interested which algorithm they used, own or from iryoku site.

Those of you who purchased the boxed copy, be wary of disc issues. I, including what appears to be many others, have encountered freezes during the install. I'm attempting to copy the contents of each disc to a folder, which apparently works.

This has got to be one of the worst launches in quite some time. Couldn't enter the activation key, had to set my text size back to 100%, then the servers were down. It's now activated and patched, but still can't launch. Tons of hardware issues, lots of performance issues, and a host of other problems (all 16:10 resolutions are letterboxed, for example).

Still waiting for the download to finish from Steam, going really slow.

John, I have read that if you set your desktop resolution to 1080, and leave the game set to whatever res you want to run it at, that works for some people, or try running it in a window.

Also, Avast will quarantine "witcher2.exe."

QTE Quick Time Events ? that doesnt sound good

I've been reading from the people who've played the game so far that the design has been "adjusted" for the controllers and the TV.

Everything from the menus which are easier to navigate with keyb. arrows to the combat system:

no combat styles choosing (high/low stance, fast/slow style), but fast/power attack, like it's made for button mashing
dodge and block with just two buttons, and are not skill-based, all you need to do is lots of clicking
dropping bombs Spliter Cell-style, where you can't just mouse click to dropped them where you want
QTEs and lots of them in boss fighs, GoW-style
journal/skill tree like Bioware did with DA2
highlighting of the items, TV sitting distance-friendly
auto-aim/auto locks

Yes, I absolutely love that they did that!!! I've been lying down on my couch playing it for a few hours now with my 360 gamepad, pretty cool game. It's been running totally smooth on my stock i7 + 580. I'm playing the steam version, and I did switch to the latest nvidia 275.27 drivers in case that matters. No troubles at all on my end so far.

That's too bad since PC games should be designed to be played with a mouse, keyboard and a nearby monitor first and foremost. Any other config options should have second priority. This isn't the case of a game where it doesn't really matter what kind of an input device is used and in which environment it's played, but when it has a significant affect on game design and mechanics, which are simplified to compensate for those defincies.

Lol not like combat in The Witcher 1 was fun. It was at best monotonous and often irritating.

I really hope this game is not going to disappoint me. I been really looking forward to this game! :( On another note any reason why you guys who got the game from Steam did not get it from GOG? The install worked quite flawlessly for me. And I also saw the 0 day patch got popped in to the game install as well. I also ran the setup program and I asked it to auto select and on my system it pretty much maxed it out other than the ubersampling or whatever it was called at 2560 x 1600! I think I am going to go and update my nvidia drivers now though I don't think it will make a difference since my cards are the 285 GTX models and so old compared to the 580s.

I got to chapter 1, and finally the game stopped being on rails (the damn tutorial/intro took me 4 hours). The enviroments esp. in chapter 1 are really great looking. Runs ok with my Q8200@2,8GHz + 4890 on high settings + cinematic dof (which looks great on the enviroments). Still plenty of settings to crank up when I upgrade my pc. Characters have pretty much the same polish as Mass Effect.

There have been some quick time events, boxing is done with them for instance. I'm sure bosses will have them too. I'm playing on hard difficulty and I died tons of times in the tutorial. Combat is pretty brutal. At least on low levels it takes just a few hits to kill Geralt. Using signs and potions seems like a must to survive.

Seems like the game is just not ready, but rather than delay a month and lose their launch/marketing window, they shipped the game anyway: "ship it broken, patch it later".
