Witcher 2

The Witcher 2 is the new Crysis

CD Projekt's RPG The Witcher 2 is set to launch in a matter of days, but already those who pre-ordered the game on Steam can now take a peek at the game's readme. Doing so reveals a very long list of graphics options, one of which in particular stands out: "Uber sampling."

As you'd expect, it's a high end option: "The whole scene is rendered multiple times to give best possible texture and object details and antialiasing (better than antialias and anisotropy even on highest settings)." The developer says this is intended only for those with both the best possible CPU and GPU available now (X4 980 / i7 980X and 6990 / 590).

Aside from that, count on options for textures, shadows, lighting, LOD, bloom, anti-aliasing, blur, depth of field, "vignette" (a strictly aesthetic effect), rain, SSAO, motion blur, animation, decals, and vertical sync. Keep in mind, this is just the short version.

A few of the above options are noted to be quite demanding as well, though not much compared to uber sampling.

Test systems (@1080p):
C2D E6750 (2 cores, 2.6Ghz) + 4870 = low end system
X4 955 (4 cores, 3.2Ghz) + 6580 = mid range system
i7 2600k (4 cores, 3.4Ghz) + GTX 570 = high end system

Results:
C2D E6750 + 4870 = Play on low, or reduce to 720p on medium
X4 955 + 6850 = no difficulty @ High, Ultra a bit jerkier.
i7 2600k + GTX 570 = completely smooth @ Ultra, beyond all doubt
??? + 6970 = completely smooth @ Ultra, beyond all doubt

I think HD4870 can do more than low end, but that system is limited by dual core CPU. Official recommended spec is Quad-core and HD4850 or GTX260 both with 1GB VRAM, and minimum spec is Intel 2.2GHz / AMD 2.5GHz Dual-core and HD3850 or GF8800.

Apparently this game engine will scale up to 8 cores/threads :D.

Starting to look like a must-have, so I put in the preorder on Steam. Even though I never played the first one and I already get tired just looking at rpg screenshots these days. Fantasy as a genre is mostly dead to me, but this looks like it may stand out.

I pre-ordered on Amazon: release day delivery, a $10 credit, plus an in-game suit of armor. Just hoping my third 570 arrives today as scheduled.

Few SS taken @2560x1600 with Ubersampling, apparently playable on 980X and 3xGTX580 :D

Nice! So I am getting my 980x in june...and then will have ot make do with my 285 in sli for now...till christmas...

Preloaded from gogamer and waiting for tomorrow.

That ubersampling is supersampling I guess? I wish every dev think this way.

I could activate my game about 90 minutes ago. Now I just need to figure out how to make it run at more than 1 frame per second. 0I have an i5 750, 4 GB DD3, a soon to be replaced GTX 275, and I'm on Win 7 64 bit home edition - not exactly a monster, but it still beats the game's recommended hardware configuration.
