Windows tablets

http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/04/acer-iconia-w700-windows-8-pricing/

The Iconia W700 is launching at $800 for the 11.6inch 1080p with core i3 1.8ghz 4gb of ram and 64 gig ssd.

$900 gets you the i5 with 4 gigs of ram and 64gig ssd and $1k gets you the i3 ,4 gigs of ram and a 128 gig ssd.

The verge reports it diffrently http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/4/3453032/acer-iconia-w700-tablet-availability-pricing

They claim the i5 processor with twice the memory (8 gigs i guess) will be 1k . The tablet runs 2.3lbs .

This bodes well for the surface I think. That comes in febuary instead of october . I'm thinking $800 for the i5 4 gig 64gig ssd verison of hte surface is possible with 1k price getting set aside for a 128 gig ssd with 8 gigs of ram and faster ivybridge chip .

To latch on to the cover.
also for the pen to attach to the device instead of taking up inside volume with a slot .

The Samsung Pro Slate seems really nice. I think it's Haswell version would be very nice.

I am looking for something with transformer style keyboard + stylus + REALLY good battery life + Core i5 class CPUs.

The surface's keyboard just doesn't seem useful to me.

B3D's thoughts on the matter?

THe surface has 2 keyboards

I wouldn't want to type a novel on either but for casual usage it will surely beat the touch screen. Not to mention that the surface has a usb2 /3(pro) so i can hook up a keyboard it also has blue tooth so i can hook up a wireless one.

A dock like the asus trasnformers have are pretty good but add alot of bulk for traveling. The plus side is the extra battery built into some of them.

Sorry but your blind :) there is one which has no real keys. That's the top one its just touch sensitive and the other has actual keys with a membrane under it. The keys have give and what not. Im on my phone so it's hard to pull up more info for you

I am not buying for casual use.

Both of them look like they would be useless to me since both latch magnetically and the keyboard/screen angle is fixed. Using it on my lap or in the bed would be difficult. The touch/type difference is really orthogonal to my issues here.

Typing with the device on your lap or in bed does sound casual. Can you really expect to type so much that a physical keyboard would be needed in those situations?

In situations like those, the weak attachment and the fixed angle of screen with vertical look like they would render the keyboard useless.

In serious typing situations, I think I would still need to adjust the screen orientation, if the keyboard is up to snuff.

Thats up to you. In bed i can picture having my knees bent with the tablet laying against them to prop up and the keyboard on my lap.

whats your useage with the dock ? The way I see the dock is simple. Your going to use it just like a laptop which means your tablet will allways be docked in bed. Otherwise what are you going to do , be reading in laptop mode and be like that damn eastmen doesn't know what he is talking about ! I gotta respond right away ! Let me get my dock and plug the tablet in and then start typing !

With both these covers i can just flip the cover over while in bed and type something out.

I also see that usage while i'm on the go. It will be easier to just flip the cover over to type something quickly than it will be to take out the dock. Same with traveling. The cover adds almost no weight to the tablet.

The asus infinity is 1.31 lbs , the dock is 1.2 lbs . The surface pro is going to be about 2lbs mabye a little less according to MS . If you add another 1.2 lbs to the device your looking at notebook weight.

If I want to type on the couch or in the bed, I can do that. When I want to just use it in media consumption mode, I can do that. Surface is good for the latter but isn't a good fit for the former.

By typing, I mean lots of it. So I am not going to pull out the dock for minor typing sessions. Surface doesn't look like it's keyboard is usable without a desk support. And while typing, I am ok with about 3 lb weight. In touch mode, it's close to iPad's weight. As it is, I have to carry a 6lb notebook everywhere, so it will be a big improvement for me.

Acer's new W700 Win 8 tablet (11.6", i3 / i5, 1080p) supports both landscape AND portrait mode while docked! Sweet!
hmm now tell me why this MORE EXPENSIVE device has a much lower res than my ipad3 & prolly slower, so why should I buy it?
I said it before & I'll say it again, Why is MS doing kin/WP7/hotmail etc ^2
do they like losing money (pssst), balmer oh ok, passs

The keyboard doesn't look floppy and looks quite sturdy. So i should be able to type anywhere i can keep the screen propped up and on my lap i would assume i'd just have it open flat like a book while typing.

As I've said before you can also use a bluetooth or usb keyboard
something like this. The case for the keyboard will bend into a tablet stand

The more expensive device has a much better cpu in it and runs windows pro allowing you to play popular pc games ? Windows 8 pro on my acer iconia w500 which has a c-50 in it (dual core 1ghz bobcat) is butter. So i don't see how an i5 will be slower .

Also now when i do work instead of bringing an ipad(andriod tablet) plus a laptop with me , i just have to bring a laptop.

You can. You can also use a keyboard and mouse. You know this little thing called USB allows that... I know it's not allowed in the apple eco system , but some company's allow you to use it. You can also play using blue tooth accessorys

Uhhhhmmmm Intel i3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ARM everything.

1080p IPs 11.6" on a Windows-Tablet/PC being able to run Metro and traditional programs is sufficient.

I know I have stayed away from the iOS crap ecosystem and Android malware mess waiting for the tablet form factor to properly support x86 software and getting an OS that runs all my important programs but can double-up as a device for reading and very light casual media consumption. I don't really care to have too many devices running around so an all in one is something I approve of for my uses.

Lets see what the battery life of these Intel W8 tablets are like.

Ars has a story about Intel wanting to micromanage Haswell tablet designs. Haswell will have lower power consumption than Sandy Bridge but Intel apparently wants to do everything to make tablets using Haswell look good, by specifying other components that manufacturers should use for Haswell tablets.

There are also the Samsung ATIV S tablets both in RT and Pro versions.

The Asus Vivo Tab tab RT and Pro

The Dell Envy

HP has a very nice tablet coming with hard clamshell like keyboard

Toshiba and Sony have very interesting sliders

Asus has the Taichi dual monitor solution...

Lenovo may have the best tablet coming out.

Intel had a reference day where 28 vendors show of hardware.. nevermind the CEATEC, IFA shows...
