Windows tablets

Looks nice , i wonder what battery life will be. They also have a compal A6 trinity tablet but the huge heat vents scared me away.

Where did you see the A6 Trinity tablet?

I'm convinced the Trinity tablet doesn't exist, it was just a typo in the original youtube video.

Fitting a 18W Brazos isn't the same as fitting a 18W Trinity, as the idle and light power consumptions should be different.

But the 18W A6 in a tablet would totally rock.

reference design, made by Compal, has the same form factor we've seen over and over again this week: an 11.6-inch, 1366 x 768 tablet paired with a keyboard dock. The main differences are that it has a kickstand, and packs one of AMD's Trinity A6 APUs. The chassis is on the chunky side, at a shade under 20mm, and the screen's a fingerprint magnet, but then again, we don't put too much stock in prototype designs; such details are subject to change.

She even says it in the video .

The verge is reporting it also

Update: We've now learned that the Compal prototype is running a 17W AMD Trinity BGA APU.

The pictures show a huge vent by the ports on one side

The video you posted of what you say is the E-350 tablet even says "Compal Hybrid Prototype Running AMD's New E Series Trinity APU"

It would make more sense for it to be a Trinity APU vs an E-350 since the E-350 has been replaced by the E-1800

I like the iPad form factor so I'm little disappointed that no vendor has released a Windows tablet that looks and feels like iPad.

Don't worry, there'll be plenty of underground chinese companies willing to make ipad knock-offs.

If you want it to "look and feel" like an ipad, why not just get an ipad?

I have it already :) As I mentioned, I like the form factor but with Windows 8 it could be even better.

How would they be better? To run legacy desktop apps or Windows games?

It will be awhile for Metro apps designed for tablets to reach the breadth of iPad-designed apps.

Sure, but far more importantly will be potential support for an active digitizer. Which, after using a capacitive touch only slate for the past year is an absolute necessity for any slate/tablet I buy in the future.

Words cannot express just how much I hate being limited to touch only (or even worse having to use a capacitive touch "pen").

That is probably the number one reason, out of many reasons, I will likely never get an iPad in the future.

So, I just have to hope one of the Win8 slate makers decides to not only have a 4:3 screen but also include a dual capacitive touch/active digitizer screen.

Anand has a pretty good hands on with the w700 from acer. This is a intel core chip in there. They wont say more than that. Its amazingly smooth.

It has usb 3 and thunderbolt . Would be amazing if they had a keyboard dock they are looking at 8 hours battery life.

The video is really good at showing off how fast windows 8 is and how smooth it is on a tablet.

So you can do handwriting and draw?

Guess that would be useful for note taking. I didn't touch type when I was in school so I hand wrote a lot. And doodled.

Looks like they are going to push voice recognition in the long term though, with dictation and Siri for input.

Aye, Win7 improved on Vista's already impressive handwriting recognition. Out of the box it'll recognize even really horrible script (cursive) handwriting. it can still hiccup on some letters if the handwriting is particularly bad. However, you can also take the time to train it to your personal handwriting style and the accuracy becomes nearly perfect.

With an active digitzer I can input text fairly quickly via handwriting. As I type nearly 200 wpm, however, it obviously doesn't approach my touch typing speed, but it is fast enough for most things on the go. And thus far, I far prefer handwriting to typing on a virtual keyboard.

One note (office app) can also be used to take handwritten notes and drawings and the later convert them to text, etc. if desired.

MS is expected to announce its own brand of tablets on Monday. If they're serious they'd have to go all in, not half-assed like Zune. That means committing billions to build up a supply chain like Apple, to get economies of scale, in order to compete on price.

But if they try to become a big player then how would their licensees react? If they go into business against their own customers, why would they bother malign Windows tablets, especially if the rumors about what they're going to charge for each license?

I doubt its MS making the hardware . I bet it be a nokia tablet and I bet its only the Arm verison . I also doubt hp/dell/samsung wil lreally care. I doubt arm windows will make a big splash.

Also at this point

Apple makes all its own hardware.

Google bought Motorolla and has been making a blessed nexus device with one company each phone generation.

So I don't see ms making a tablet as a big deal for these companys

Seems like an Asus Windows 8 tablet 600 series showed up at the FCC

http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/27/did-asus-windows-8-packing-tablet-600-hit-the-fcc/

The feds out the device as the TF600T, an unannounced product that sounds suspiciously similar to the Tablet 600 ASUS trotted out at Computex. Further investigation only revealed a standard radios -- Bluetooth, WiFi and NFC -- but the Transformer-like model number and Windows logo have our attention

Engadget got a hands on with the MSI slider also

That MSI convertable tablet looks interesting. Supposedly a version of it will be available with a ULV IVB CPU. Now if only they put on a better display. There's no way I'm getting a slate/tablet with only 1366x768 resolution. I want a minimum of 1080p (even better if it was 1200p) so that there's at least somewhat useable width when in portrait mode. Although I'd definitely prefer a 4:3 ration display with 1600x1200. That would be my ideal slate.

So the 810 leaks out

While not what we'd call a stunning revelation, the filing for the 810 (as the TF810C) shows a WiFi-only device with the expected NFC for quick peripheral syncing. The 11.6-inch transforming slate is still devoid of a few key details in spite of having its wireless life laid bare -- namely, if and when it reaches the US

Looks like we will get some good variaty at launch.
