Windows 7

Have they finally implemented Xbox 360 pad control of the media centre and games explorer? I doubt it but i'm amazed how they could miss such an obvious bit of UI enhancement at practically zero cost.

And for that matter, is the games explorer still as useless as in Vista? Or can you actually edit game info and icons now?

They changed the game explorer somewhat (game updates and the right panel now has a tab control - don't ask me why) but no editing.

The Games for Windows Live client should subsume the game explorer. There's just so many alternate UIs it's crazy. It's like the Media Player and Sync solutions from Microsoft: You have Media Centre, Windows Media Player, the libraries, Zune Software... argh then Live Mesh, Sync Centre, Sync Toy, Active Sync, FolderShare... ad nauseum.

Microsoft: PICK ONE!

lol yes essentially

I moved the task bar to the left side and widened it. Then I created various folders in the taskbar (Applications, Windows, Multi-Media, Internet, Games, Gaming Applications). Then I simply drag and dropped desktop icons into the folder area to create quick-launch icons. The bar itself works from both a horizontal or verticle perspective.

Here is with the taskbar in the traditional position:

I dig it definitely!

I have wiped out my virtual machine that had Windows 7 Beta on it but can anyone report the age old problem of Microsoft IE when downloading a large file and how it downloads to some temporary folder and then copies it over at the end despite you telling the stupid program where the location to save the file should be in the first place? Has that been fixed? That is so f#*king annoying I cant even begin to describe it...

I can't understand why someone would use the "traditional" taskbar rather than the superbar like you do

When figuring out how you did it I tried doing this in XP and got remarkably far! Then, explorer crashed and everything was back to default.

I'm using quite basic stuff myself :p
edit: using Build 7057 nowadays, but otherwise the same

On calculator all the keyboards I have gotten have a button to launch that, it works with no driver installed as well. For notepad there is the whole windows key and typing bit if you dont mind typing, but otherwise you may be right.

The way I have my system set up:
I have pinned my most frequently used programs to the task bar Ie Firefox, Outlook etc
Any frequently used programs are pinned to the start menu so they are always at the top of the list.
Once I got used to doing that its very straightforward.

Sorry Quoted the wrong person and cannot edit the post

Proper Quote:
I'm really not particularly sure that I like the absence of quicklaunch.
I do heavily use it both at home & work.
Programs like calc & notepad are always in quicklaunch where they are out of the way but quickly run with 2 clicks.
To get the equivalent function in W7, I have to have a big clunky icon constantly on screen :???:

I have just started using windows 7 on my desktop and my laptop. I installed the technet version just today.

The most pleasant surprise was out of the box driver support. My wifi adapter in my desktop was a real hassle requiring me to remove it before installing the drivers and replacing it back into the computer (drivers had to be downloaded from dlink) and it had a habit of disconnecting every time a remote desktop connection was attempted in Vista 64, but this time it, was supported right out of the box in Win 7 x64.

On my laptop the 32 bit version has been working well and I am impressed so far.

It has definitely been the most pleasant install experience for me out of all of the operating systems that I have tried over the past years.

Care to publish MD5s and SHA1s of the images from MSDN/Technet along with filenames?

Someone should so other people with "unofficial" RC1s don't get shafted with infected images.

Oh, for that I can give you MD5 sums:
x86: 8867C13330F56A93944BCD46DCD73590
x64: 98341af35655137966e382c4feaa282d
These two are the safe MD5's for 'unofficial RC / 7100'

It's not "really pirating", it's just leaked builds which work with the same keys which Microsoft issued on release of build 7000.

Or people could just wait till the 5th if they don't have a technet or MSDN subscription.

The humanity, having to wait for like 5 whole days :O
