You're confused.

HP's BR support is not exclusive anymore. This is a huge blow to BR because the 2nd biggest PC manufacturer will now offer HD DVD equiped PCs as well as BR equiped ones. Spin it however you like.

Do you have a link to an article? HP has yet to change their stance of supporting Blu-Ray. All they've done is point out they would like Mandatory copy managment and iHD support. The BDA has already comitted to the former.

I have yet to see a press release of their neutrality.

You will see DELL cave in pretty soon considering Vista comes with HD DVD playback software out of the box. ;)

DELL has been an even bigger supporter of the Blu-Ray format. Why do you think they'll go neutral?

HP have officially announced this?

In any case it's likely not to be a "huge blow" since HP is one of many on the BDA side. It would start to get significant if Dell and others started doing the same. The level of significance attached to potential HP neutrality is overstated when you look at things in context. The situation is very transparent, one format seems to have the support momentum and attention, the other is losing steam day after day.

Toshiba lost its biggest ally in TimeWarner and it looks like the best feature of HD-DVD (MMC) is now with Blu-Ray too - I'm not getting into the iHD vs. Java shenanigans since I don’t know the intricacies of that debate :)

Anyway I'm off for the evening.

Maureen Weber, general manager of personal storage in HP's personal systems group, on Wednesday said if Blu-ray remains committed to this stance, the computer maker will indeed adopt a more neutral position versus being an exclusive Blu-ray supporter.

"If they are unable to incorporate technologies we think are critical for the PC architecture, we'll be more neutral. We'll think of cost and implementation across the board. Potentially, we could support both HD DVD and Blu-ray," she said.

"You'd see us supporting both formats in various trade show booths," she said.

Do you even read what people post?

In other words BR format is looking more and more like HD DVD. ;)

UMD ring a bell?

Yes it rings a bell, but what you just said has nothing to do with UMD. All you did was point out a few products that died over the years that that place sold. It would be like me pointing out that those places sell DVDs and CDs and proof of UMDs success. It's stupid and childish PC-Engine, and you know it.

So basically PC you're latching on to a possible move by HP and stating it as a blow to blu-ray's momentum. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, but you know HP may not jump ship at all either, y'know?

That still doesn't say that they're supporting HDDVD right now. They're just stating a hypothetical.

Give me a press release saying that HP has now given support for HDDVD.

PLease! Provide the link.

Nope, in other words, HDDVD is almost as good as dead. BR would look more like HDDVD if they significantly reduced the capacity of their discs.

If BR doesn't also adopt iHD then HP will support HD DVD too. Those are the facts.

How about you provide a link that says BR will adopt iHD.

Did you read page 18? Read the posts related to UMD then get back to me.

That really has nothing to do with anything as what is in contention is HP's support for HDDVD. Which, at this point is non-existant.

Those are not facts, those are threats.

We can play this semantics game all day if you like or you can get back to me when BR adopts iHD and turns into HD DVD's twin.

Unless you can show me BR supporting iHD then HP WILL support HD DVD. The writing is on the wall.;)

PC-Engine I'm just going to ask you a straight question, since you seem to dance around all day long with this stuff.

Do you think HD-DVD is "beating" blu-ray right now?

and

If you had to bet money on one of them, which would you bet on?

Fixed!

Face it, support for HD-DVD is waneing. Denying it is just delusional. When you have nearly all the content providers (film) supporting it, the two largest PC companies supporting it (HP and DELL, including Apple Comp., not large but makes for 100% of mac users) and then decide to release it on the PS3. Blu-Ray seems the clear winner.

Wait a second, where has it been stated that Blu-Ray supports Managed Copies??? Anybody have a link? That was one of my main reasons why I wanted HD-DVD to win...

HD DVD beats BR in different categories and vice versa. I'm not interested in predicting who will win.

Oh I'm sure you're not.

Hardknock, here ya go:

Article link

Relevent text:

...On Wednesday Blu-ray said it will incorporate mandatory managed copy but would launch it in spring 2006 with interactive features built on Sun Microsystems Inc.'s (SUNW.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Java software...

There's a linked article a few posts back. If not ArsTecnica has a piece on it.

so BR is launching in spring now? If so I would think that somewhat seals the deal for HD-DVD.

We have a confirmed spring launch for the US?

HD DVD is launching in Japan in December this year and other countries early next year.
