WiiGeePeeYou (Hollywood) what IS it ?

Its interesting the compare the Wii version of Madden NFL to the XBox version. The Wii version has higher resolution textures and more advanced lighting and shadowing then the XBox version and runs at 60fps (twice the framerate of the XBox version according to reviews I've read).

It will look nice. Hopefully, next year they can ditch the current-gen engine and make one exclusive to the Wii to maximize the graphics. Of course, I won''t go as far as saying it will achieve Xbox360 levels.

They do look good, but except for the (clearly not "real") image quality, they don't look much better than RE4 does on gamecube. Of course that was a GoTY quality title, so that's by no means bad - but also no reason to believe that Hollywood is anything but a slightly tweaked Flipper. Btw, who doesn't believe that? It seems to me that pretty much everyone agrees except for slight deviations on the extent of those tweaks.

I don't believe it's a slight tweak at all, which exactly is what? Hopefully when people who have broadway knowledge can start freely talking about it more you might take the same design aspects nintendo wants for that and apply it to that. Everything I know about this system isn't just a tweak. They got rid of GC"s ram problem, the cpu is way beefier, and my logic leads my down the line if they are tweaking the design and cpu got a nice upgrade it's highly likely the flipper did too. In clear terms like the gecko went from being CXe to a GX and I'm pretty sure nintendo did the same with flipper in their own way.

Far Cry Vengence

I just saw recent scans from a german magazine for Far Cry Vengence. It includes the first pics that were ever posted in this forum, which looked similar to the Xbox version. There are so much better than the crappy official ones released on-line. You can tell they are using bump mapping on the hands and possibly on the characters as well. The lighting looks better and there is full reflection on the water. The dev team was telling the truth that the were working to make good visuals on the Wii. If you want to see the scans you need to go to the Neogaf website forums.

They also have some good zelda scans as well.

On this screenshot, the characters looks like cutouts. The lighting and shadowing on the characters aren't good at all compared to the rest of the image. That is what bothers me the most. It seems like the character models are a mixed bad and they haven't implemeted advanced lighting on them. Hopefully this will change.

It could be a design decision to make the enemies stand out so they're easier to spot. Most first person shooters tend to have easy to see enemies, especially faster paced ones.

What exactly was changed about the cpu? Isn't a GX practically the same architecture (and performance per mhz, ignoring SIMD) as a CX?

Same microarchitecture. It's basically a die shrink with a larger L2 cache and a few minor L2 related improvements.

I think most people here are probably on the same page, but just have different opinions as to what constitutes an 'improvement'.

I got a chance to see the magazine scans (which I won't link, of course), and one of the shots is the exact same as the first of these earlier leaked screens. Also, the crosshair for the machine gun in the scans identical to the second of the leaked screens. Looks like Wii is capable of at least modest amounts of normal mapping.

Some more screenshots (offscreen, though), of Wii Sports and Excite Truck. Excite Truck in particular is especially good and looks definitely out of NGC's reach (nice texturing, huge draw distance, and a decent amount of sparks in at least one screenshot). All screenshots look very clean, so either there is a good amount of FSAA going on, or the offscreen capture is making it look like there is...

Will Wii end like DS, with only Nintendo and perhaps a couple 3rd party developers (Square-Enix in DS' case) bother making good-looking engines ?

Excite Trucks is so far definitely the best looking Wii title. Very nice water reflections, especially. Has there been any word on the framerate so far?

If you listen to the lastes IGN wii podcast,Matt talks about the look they are trying to acheive. He specifically mentions a "paperlike" manga look.

IGN has some nice Madden direct feed. It looks very good so far. The video shows how the controlls are really used (you can use very small and subtle movements).
