I don't even know where to begin after reading that.. The reason for making Wii very under powered is so it can be left on in sleep mode 24 hours a day for freaking net updates??!! I haven't heard something so stupid in a long time. Have Nintendo engineers not heard of power saving? (dropping the speed and so power of components when the system isn't being used for gaming)..

Well, they've implemented a power saving mode in Wii. According to their jp-Website it draws less than a miniature light-bulb in that mode.

Yeah, in a way, it ridiculous. Hopefully, these "updates" will give Wii more capabilties (upgrading firmaware). I wish they didn't go this route and at least but a decent graphics card in the system that could match atleast the current mid-range graphics cards for the PC, instead of just overclocking the GC and throwing in a motion controller. Well, at least there won't be a huge power brick.

In that case the entire low power high efficiency idea behind the console is even more pointless. Outside of running the console in sleep mode how much power it consumes is irrelivant. The system is plugged into the mains not ran on batteries Nintendo!..

Well, it's official. The Wii is a low power, overclocked Gamecube!!!!!!

On a side note, the prevalence of "sleeping" electronics is rather disturbing given the questionable benefits (waiting for a rare firmware update?). I recall reading a report from awhile back indicating that sleeping/idling devices account for something like 1/5 of all household power consumption.

On another note, I think Iwata wanted devs to squeeze a lot more out of the GC than previous efforts with the exception of RE 4 and Factor 5's Star Wars games. I believe he made a comment about devs not utitlizing the full potential of the system (GC). I guess the Wii is an excuse for them to do so with an upgraded model of GC.

Nintendo does make effecient systems that hardly break in comparison with the competition. My question is who is going to be willing to go beyond just a basic GC port and make some absolutely stunning looking games.

always on means more than get updates (really depends developers). For example, as I may suggest, Wii's animal crossing will become more interesting as people can go to your village 24 hours since it's always on.

even if that was true, Wii has over 3 times the amount of 1T-SRAM main memory compared to Gamecube (88 MB vs 24 MB). that alone should allow for much larger environments and overall performance especially when Wii is really pushed.

Teasy, it's not so simple. if sleep mode/downclocking was all that was needed to turn a powe-hungry system into a power-efficient system then nobody would have ever bothered with developing low-consumption devices - people would've just used desktop-grade top-consumption parts with sleep mode and voila. it takes purposeful, intelligent design to get something to low power consumption and keep it still reasonably-powerful. you can't get much work done while in sleep mode, you know ; )

Marvel:Ultimate Alliance looks awful on all platforms. XB360 and PS3 versions look like the PS2 version with a spot of normal mapping on the ground. Do not use this title as a reference point for Wii hardware capabiltiies!

I usually don't talk much, but this is flat out wrong. From what I know on the broadway as fact the Gecko(750CXe) can't compete with it.The broadway offers bigger cache sizes in comparison to it (though not the same as 750GX) along with how the memory adresses it that alone makes it a distinctly different piece of hardware from the Gecko. Since these recent announcement about power have come out no use in holding back some info, yet I won't be specific. Imagine if this cpu using lower power now imagine it being stuck into the next nintendo handheld.

Looking at that Nintendo football (ACTUAL football) title, Mario Striker or whatever it's called... The audience consisting of realtime rendered 3D models makes me think Wii must be at least somewhat more than simply an overclocked GC; I don't think the CPU could software-skin THAT many characters at a steady 60fps framerate.

Vertex shaders seem a distinct possibility.

It also have more memory, so they can simply pre compute the software-skin. Or they'll just use instances which are easier to do on CPU if you software-skin. Or mix of both. Afterall they do have games like Pikmin and the likes on Gamecube.

Of course its not that simple for a mobile device that needs to conserve power even when its being used. But that's not what we're talking about. We're talking about power saving when the system is not being used by the end user, when its basically off.

from the interview that accompanied the pic:
IGN Wii: Obviously the focus on Wii is in the gameplay and not so much in visual specifics, but for the hardcore readers, how do the visuals stack up to the 360 version you're working with? Did you scale down the model poly counts, did you have to remove any normal mapping or bloom? How does it stack up on a general level?

Karthik: It looks different than the 360 version. We have been pleasantly surprised by some of the effects and detail we've been able to get from Wii, but our actual assets and visual look were designed specifically for the Wii, as it's a very different approach than the 360. It looks really nice. We're now supporting 480p and 16:9 widescreen.

Thank you very much for the info.I wonder if the new way of how the memory adresses is (partialy) due to the controler.

from the interview that accompanied the pic:

Even if this is the case will probably take some time till we see the diference as many time thet just pick one version (usually the best one) and put it to all the versions (althought UBI with wii games this time is not doing this). So this is probably a general ss.
