"While we are in the very early stages of another strong growth cycle, it is not a mirror of the past. In fact, our 2007 guidance is based on our belief that this cycle will be deeper, wider, and longer than any previous period of new console introductions. From the technology powerhouses of Xbox 360 and PS3, to the uniquely engaging ease of play and inventiveness of the Wii, to the portability of the DS Lite, to the value of the PS2, there is a product and a price range to stimulate the core and casual gamer, and attract new customers to the video game experience."

Fontaine added, "No previous cycle has had the diversity of console attributes currently in our stores; no previous cycle has merged other technologies like HDTV, Wi-Fi, and MP3 attributes to make the gaming experience truly the best ever. The video game business has become more complex with more console choices, more sophisticated software, and a huge variety of enhancement accessories. The business is increasingly favoring the game passion and deep expertise of our 22,000 managers and game advisors whose product knowledge differentiates GameStop from the competition and will give us an even greater edge in the marketplace of the future."
Hear hear. Maybe we can, as a whole, drop the fanb*y mentality and appreciate that there is something out there for everyone. The videogame market is the strongest it has ever been, from the breadth and depth of titles available, to the price points and gameplay experiences.

This in the end is only good news for us all. So please, no more wishing for /insert hated console/ to fail. It only hurts us all in the end.

Bravo! I was damn sure this post was going to be nothing but flame bait... but wow, I'm thoroughly surprised. Especially coming from Businessweek (being a completely non-gaming journal).

 Drum roll please:!: The winner of the console war is.....GameStop and consumers:!:

I sorta don't get this thread, but I am all for being positive. I am a gamer and not a shareholder for any of these companies and pledge no allegiances. It did make me uncomfortable when I heard that, "the cycle will be deeper, wider, and longer".

Well, I agree ... I mentioned a few times before that I think the market is big enough now to sustain three players in the console market, just as the handheld market is big enough for 2-3 players (say, Nintendo, Sony, and some kind of Java standard). In theory there could be more, but I think instead we'll see more products from these three players, possibly in co-operation with other companies.

The thread is basically answering the question of who's winning the console war. Answer? All of us. :)

As for deeper, wider, longer, get your mind out of the gutter. :p

'War' is a very bad term for people to use. Wars have no winners - only a side that didn't lose as much as the other side. In this particular race, all sides are winning, only some winning less than others. It's more a race. Perhaps the 'Console Olympics' given that each console can win in different events? One will walk away with the most golds, and the coveted 'Most Sales' race, and can be crowned champion. But that doesn't stop even the Dominican Republic from having their moment of glory and being winners.

PSWii60 anyone?

(Note: I just wish I could find a Wii to complete my personal tri-fecta  )
(Follow up to Note, Note: Mods, we need a PSWii60 icon.)

I prefer the term "Wii-S-3". You could replace the P with a Wii logo turned on its side.

This is an interesting graph I ran upon today. I don't know if it has ever been discussed here before:

It's a graph of the number of development staff at the disposal of each company's games divisions.

Interesting points are: How freakin huge EA is, how big Sony is compared to the other platform owners, and how tiny Sega has become. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

It really helps put things in perspective when these publishers names are being thrown around.
