While the forums were down, I went shopping!

This seems like the perfect little thread to confess my shopping habits went a little overboard last week as well...

Actually, the smilie is not very fitting, this one gets the point better: :devilish:

Hell yeah, I now have got a PS3 as well! Got one of the few 60 GB "starter-pack" versions left together with Resistance + Motorstorm and a new Hitachi 720p beamer!

Eventhough I knew exactly what I was expecting (been playing regularly at my friends place), I am still a bit overwhelmed by the whole package. The XMB is very sleek indeed and the prospect of new functions through regular firmware updates is very exciting.

Loving Resistance and Motorstorm as well. Awesome stuff.

Only negative points I have at the moment is that backwards-compatible on the European PS3 is a joke and has me quite a bit disappointed. Tried a couple of games and they either don't work, or run half as smooth (Ratchet & Clank 3). PSone backwards-compatibility on the other hand works fine - but is *very* pixelated. Tried Tomb Raider 2 and can't remember Lara being THAT pixelated. In other words, it hurts the eyes and is that bad, that it's hardly playable. :???:

Oh well.

Rock on PS3 games! :)
Next on the list will be Warhawk and Ratchet & Clank!

PSOne games look fab on a PSP though! Just bought a slimline doohickory. It and the PS3 just work so well together, I'm really looking forward to more dev support for games that cross utilise the PSP as an extension to the PS3!

Well, you could just be unlucky with the games you tried. All the games I tried worked pretty well, but I only tried games that I still wanted to play (though I'll probably never get round to them now) like Resi 4, MGS3, and some of the stuff that keeps being fun like Buzz actually plays and look smuch better on the PS3. GT4 has some artifacts in the clouds sometimes, but most of the time it runs and looks great, and I can even use the DFPro wheel, and you have the added benefit if having unlimited memory cards. Singstar works too, mikes and all.

But recently I haven't touched anything PS2 (except my DDR with big dancemat, but that is in the guestroom downstairs for visiting kids and when I need a workout ;) ) and when this year is over, I doubt I'll ever put a PS2 game back in there. There's just too much stuff to play, as I'm sure you'll agree / find out soon enough. ;)

Let me know when you want to do some online Motorstorming (my PSN Id is over to the left), I haven't had a chance to play that game nearly enough, and should be fun to do some online stuff. And sign up for the Warhawk clan ;) Warning though, that game is terribly addictive online, once you get into it ...

Anyway, you know all these things ... but all these games are just so big and long-lasting, there's just not enough time in the day!

Thanks Arwin!

You're probably right about PS2 B/C. Must have been a bit unlocky in the choice of games I tried out. Being one of those PS supporters for over 10 years, I was looking forward to a more or less perfect B/C feature. Knowing that Sony ditched the EE in the European PS3s was a bit of a disappointment, but I was nonetheless expecting a very well integrated B/C feature, especially as I still have quite a bit of games I'm still interested in. Looking at the B/C compatibility list by Sony though, the picture isn't quite as dark as I assumed after trying out a couple of games that didn't work for me.

One thing stands though. SD games looked a hell of a lot better back on my SD TV and is probably the one thing that will hold me back going back to some of the last generation gaming peaks.

Sorry about missing you last night though - was playing Resistance with a friend (Story mode in CoOp) and missed you for a online match.

Will buy Warhawk soon though - have played it a bit at my friends place and love it, though I am still a bit overwhelmed by everything and the possibilities the game offers. Especially flying the Warhawk is quite challenging, though very much fun! I'll get it soon and I'll be sure to enlist in the B3d Clan when I do. Until then though, i'll be more or less focusing on Resistance. Am getting better by the day and want to better my skills. :devilish:

Motorstorm. Have played a bit and though I quite like it, I find the menu structure very confusing. Have only played a quick Online game and realized that I still have to get a whole lot better if I want to be competitive. Any advices? Can you add friends/buddies in Motorstorm Online as well?

Doesn't PS1 BC support the groovy upscaling solution that's had some great results on PS2 titles?

Yeah, it does - though I must say, I'm a bit unsure as to if it makes the game looks better or worse. IMO, it makes the game look... different. Have only tried Tomb Raider though and will have to try some more (perhaps newer games) to see how well it stacks up. I still think SD games should be played on SD TVs for best effect. On a 2 meter wide screen, it just all looks very pixellated...

Cheers Phil

I've only seen screenshots of PS2 games, where the interpolation is in smaller steps. I guess on PS1, with square steps being replaced by triangle steps, it'll still look freaky!

I should also add that the Navy trained me VERY well to protect myself from attacks, lol.

Well, if you are going to bring the Navy into this, just remember that your better half is an officer, and you are merely enlisted. ;) All of the Seal training in the world won't help you with chain of command issues. :smile2:

61" and 40" tv in the same room... Some people :p

All going well I'll get my new TV cabinet sometime this week so I'll post piccies when I get that all setup
Although the glass has been screwed up twice, so it's taken just on 10 weeks to get built :(

We don't get the W series in NZ, 'high end' it's either the D series or the X series for us (with the X being close to twice the price). I choose the D, although I had the option to get the X for 35% more, I decided for what I use the D would suit me a better (brighter + contrast + 120hz* + response). I like it a lot

*I don't actually use the motion thingy. Although I assume it helps response time

Please! I'm grieving a loss of a family member here... The 61" is no more

Have you built it yourself or what's going on with the glass?
Looking forward to see the pics.

And here is the proof :)

Yep, it was so boring while the site was down that I finally gave in and bought a PS3, the 40GB one. It is very quiet and I'm liking it thus far, I also picked up Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Two Blu-ray movies: 300 and Corpse Pride, and oh I just bought this SUPER awesome Sony KDL-40W3000 Full HD TV today.
Congratz Dr Evil. I too bought the PS3 80GB this weekend with three Blu-Ray disks. Still have to install and test it

No I'm not building it. Getting a furniture company to do that, but I did design it.
It has a lot of glass, the first order came out in the wrong size and the second was badly scratched. Apparently the new glass should have arrived today, so fingers crossed. :)

I suppose the game would look outstanding on any HD screens, but you 90"+ folks here"hate you", any chance of posting an offscreen shot? Always wondered how games would look on those.

I sit about 3.5m or 11.5' from the screen. I'll try to take a pic for ultragpu tonight.

I didn't wan't to derail the Killzone 2 thread, so I chose to raise the dead instead!

The quality of these pictures are not very good. It seems my pocket camera needs really good lighting conditions to perform adequately. I tried to take some pictures from a Blu-ray movie, but wasn't able to get good enough quality. The picture quality is better in reality, than what these pics suggest. My projector is an entry level Full HD-projector Sanyo PLV-Z700.

Click the pictures to make them bigger. The screen is 100". Two of the pictures has a Blu-ray movie covers on the bottom left corner to make seeing the scale easier.

edit: for some reason only the first one is clickable... Oh boy the compression artifacts are pretty ugly... edit2 you can click the first one to get it bigger and clicking the other two makes them smaller...
