Whats needed for character/facial Photo Realism?

There are simple proportions that nearly everybody's face follows.

The eyes are close to the center of the head, and approximately split the head width-wise into thirds.

The bottom of the nose and the mouth split the lower half of the head into thirds.

Look in the mirror. Look at anybody around you. You'll see these proportions mirrored (though they are based upon skeletal structure, so excessive amounts of fat will obviously screw this up).

Is that regarding the inner edges of the iris?

They do in that pic.

I do agree that the iris and lips seem to be a bit too big. But other than that, the proportions appear uncommon, but not unnatural to me.

Nose and mouth are too low, eyes appear too high (though without the top of the head for reference, it's hard to tell for sure).

That doesn't make it unrealistic. It just make it uncommon. In fact Hollywood likes to cast actors with rare facial proportions in order to better fit certain roles.

People who have facial proportions that far off are typically dramatically deformed, and thus far from Hollywood material (for the majority of roles).

Seriously, go to a movie info website and look at pics of a bunch of actors and actresses.

It looks weird to me too. If I cut the mouth away, I see a young man, but the mouth should belong to a woman obviously.

I work for Hollywood I should know. It all depends on the movie and the role. You don't always want a prince and princess in every role.

That's all well and good, but the pic didn't seem to be any attempt at anything other than realism.

Gotta check this out:
Err... That's an 'analouge' 2D painting. Quite a lot of artists can do (extremely) close to photorealistic work in 2D. Even more so if working with a model or from a photograph. Photorealistic 3D modeling of a human face in motion is something completely different. Nice work, though.

I know that but the guy posted examples of paintings and I'd just seen that recently and thought it was nice. It takes a LOT of skill to get THAT photorealistic. Even for really good artists it's something a little special.

Funny that all the replies to that picture are glowing of admiration...

Can't say I see anything terribly wrong with that picture. She looks a little long in the face perhaps, but as the image cuts off above her eyebrows it skews the impression a bit. What exactly is it that annoys you?

I think it looks terrible as well if it makes you feel any better. I mean especially considering that one would assume it took some skill to get the model to look decent it is sad, but perhaps he orignally was modeling a wolf man or something and then decided against it.

Anyway I think the dude is one of the better ones, maybe a beard is easier to do than skin so it saves some work.

Ever seen Brandy?

How about Sam Cassell?

Okay, the latter's not hollywood, but still, proportions vary a lot. She doesn't look that deformed, and the shadows/hair make the eyes look narrower than they really are.

The bottom of the nose and the mouth split the lower half of the head into thirds.
Again, the shadows make her lips look bigger and lower than they really are. Even the Brandy pic above has "less realistic" lip proportions.

Okay, I agree that the proportions aren't perfect, but they're not "ugh" bad. All other aspects of the rendering look pretty damn good IMO, with the exception of the less than spectacular eyebrows.

Lips from hollywood are not really a good example of what peoples lips look like anymore :p
