God i was at best buy for the friday sales and bought 200$ in dvds and cds and its taking me forever to open them. Not only do I have to go through the crappy plastic but then those tape seals . Its to friggen crazy .

It is a conspiricy. They are in league with the medical profession. You have no idea how many people see the doctors after tring to open one because of cut fingers or frayed nerves.

And with the current state of affairs and DMCA, I say NEVER buy one.

ByteMe is right.
It's a conspiracy: knife/scissors makers, pharmaceutic companies, healthcare system.

People will buy more knifes/scissors, they will get cut more often, needing more and more plasters/disinfectant, and at worst stitches.

The economy stays high, everyone's happy. Apart people's fingers of course.

They were thinking that it would stop people stealing discs out of the boxes. That way you wouldn't get home and say "WTF!! My discs are all missing!!"

I find a scalpel or pair of scissors works well. If you look carefully, a lot of DVD boxes now have those little strips you can peel to break the plastic wrapper.

Yea come on though if it takes me 20 mins to open its going to take a thief at least 5 or 6 mins. YOu telling me no one can catch him ?

I think that says more about you than the packaging.

Well my mommy wont let me play with sharp things so i can't cut the plastic or slice it

Seriously think we can find out who ever invented that set up. Kill him. Clone him and repeat. 1 time for each dvd and cd ever made and packaged that way ?

Well, there's a better solution to that problem that's commonly in use over here. You only have empty boxes on the shelfs in the store. When you buy your CD or DVD the cashier puts the the right disc into your box. Solves both problems. No theft (unless you're interested in an empty box) and no hard to open boxes.

There are issues with that system. Loose discs get lost or misfiled. They can get scratched or covered in fingerprints. For the store there are space and tracking issues to deal with. Can you image a big store with 100,000+ units in stock having to open all the cases and safely store the 1-4 discs inside the boxes? That's why it's easier and simpler to keep them all together on the shelf.

It's not like these boxes are any harder to open than a childproof cap or a jar with a tamper proof lid. And once you get the wrapper and security tag off, they don't bother you ever again.

I must say, it does irritate me when i buy a game (usually happens with games, since i shop at GAME for games and Virgin or HMV for CDs/DVDs) and they give me an already opened case, with the guy (usually a total p**ck) handling a disc that is supposed to be brand new and untouched.

I much prefere spending 6 hours with electric knives and all trying to open the wrapping, at least i'm sure the disc i get is absolutely perfect. And if it isnt (NEVER happened), then it's covered from the publishing company to be refunded. Not sure what are the legalities of "buying a disc that has been opened and handled already"... Anyone informed here?

Bit of a contradiction in terms then if you were buying it from Virgin.

No no no i meant, it happens with games because the shop, GAME (how original, it's what used to be called Electronic Boutique), has that policy. Virgin discs have wrapping. Lots of it. :D

I've had a couple of damaged CDs and a couple of damaged DVDs from places that open the boxes. Now I just look for factory sealed boxes.

BTW, GAME originally used to be called... GAME. EB from USA bought the GAME chain in the UK and renamed them all to EB. Then when EB UK bought themeselves out from EB US, they reverted back to their original GAME name.

Well. Let my just say that for me as a consumer the system has never been any problem. If it can keep theft away and I don't get any redundant packaging, then I'm all fine. Storage space isn't much of an issue. Discs don't take much space. They got them all under the cash desk and they are usually quicker at finding the right disc than the average customer is at getting the right amount of money out of his wallet. So I don't see any problems with this system at all.
