What games have exploited consoles' graphics the most?

it is unfortunate that some want (and expect) Cgraphics to 'look' like CGI graphics (oo self shadowing). if they don't see it, then it gets graded 'low tech'
Hehe, coincidentally, Ico DOES have self shadowing :) Everything in that game is so subtle, though. That's why it's visual accomplishments fly over most peoples' heads.

I know it added an erethreal glow to Yorda for me.

I'm a real GFX whore and I had to stare real hard to make out the effects in that game. it really brings together how well the art assets were in this title IMO.

yes, ICO featured some effects in the early life of PS2 that no other game on the platform had.
the shadows in the game, not only self shadowing but also the shadows other objects cast on the characters (see the shadows from the trees in the introductory scene when the big horny guys on horses take ICO into the castle...) look amazing.
i was playing the game last week and the part where ICO first meets Yorda, the chamber with the loooooooong stairs and those curtains flowing with the wind... i was looking at those curtains for like 10 minutes straight... they just look amazing, with the light coming in from the wondow and the shadows and everything... it just looks so good...
i guess there are many games that "push more polygons" than ICO or have better resolution or whatever else, but all those games should only be so lucky if they looked half as good as ICO does with all those effects they used...

hope we are not limiting this to current gen consoles.

radiant silvergun- - Sega Saturn.

Ridge Racer Type 4 - PS1

In that case, how about Seiken Densetsu 3 (what would have been Secret of Mana 2)

Best looking SNES game evar

ICO is a very good-looking game sure (although a bit on the monotonous side). It just always puzzled me why they had to succumb to pointfiltering in some places, or was that an error?

I'M PRETTY sure it was a mistake... i remember seeing that room (i think its the one with the bridge thing and the ropes and stuff...) and seeing that there was no bilinear filtering....
i was absolutely shocked. no words.

Acutally I originally stated in the 1st message I was only interested in current gen consoles. I wasn't ever interested in consoles till now. I looked down on them due to their graphics being crap compared to PCs with 3D acceleration. ;)

Even if this is only about current gen console games, I think Vagrant Story (PS1) deserves a mention, as it's graphics (artistic direction mostly, of course) stand up to and surpass many current gen games.

Huh? That's just weird. I'm pretty sure US version didn't have that problem. I thought Euro version was even more polished...

Axelay on the SNES - came out early on in its lifecycle and used Mode7 to absolutely stunning effect.

i gotta say b 17 bomber looked pretty hot on the intelivison. So did sea battle .

LOL. Excellent point! I was blown away when I sat down in front my 19" color, no-remote TV and my Sears Atari 2600 knock-off and played Sea Battle for the first time. It had 16 different colors!! ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist. :D

I used to allways be second player and create a mine ship and a battle ship and go behind the base and leave the battle ship and plant all mines around the opening and i would never lose .

GC is obviously Metroid Prime as everyone has stated may times.

PS2 I would have no idea but since very one says Silent Hill 3 I'll go with that.

Xbox well Wreckless is one of the best showing off load of visual effects (plus real time reflections on all the cars, that's ALL of them), that with the huge draw distance and huge cities makes for one visual feast.

Tekken3 and Sould Edge were pretty impressive on PS1.

Contra: Hard Corps on Genesis (Megadrive) was also great looking esp those explosions!! Wow! Even when I play it today (emu :D ) it looks awesome!

Panzer Dragoon Orta on Xbox looks way better then Wreckles...
ICO looks good, but not as good as VF4: Evolution or perhaps Kill Zone
Metroid Prime looks good and zelda hasn't got that good cell shading, only nice particles (JSRF is best looking cell shaded game)
