What features does Xbox Live lack?

Get a rope.

(Cookies for whomever gets the reference.)

More seriously, the web browser. That I can sort of tab back forth from while playing the game. Make it easier when I have to go find help (such as some of the scavenger hunt missions in Borderlands). This would basically require Natal or a KB though.

Browsers tend to be memory hogs, so you'll never see an in-game web browser on a console this gen.

I really like the idea of having better sound quality for Xbox Live! I can't understand a lot of people from the United States as you all have funny accents and deliberately slur your words to make life hard for perfect english speakers like New Zealanders. :)

I think it would definately be good to have Xbox Live family packs. What I think would be a good solution is having Xbox Live be tied to a user account and console like they do with the Arcade games. I think that would be a good compromise.

Another thing I would like is to be told how many people are in multiplayer for certain game titles. I hate spinning my wheels and waiting in futility because I can't see if there are any other people playing the game!

I originally wanted to post my ideas for the UI, but decided against it since it wasn't really Live related, but then I started thinking that once the next version of Live is here it will be hard to seperate it. My original idea would be to allow lots more customization of the dashboard. Simple things like colors, backgrounds, etc. But the biggest thing would be customizing your own channel, kinda like a favorites. I want just those games & apps that I use all the time there. Like my favorite Arcade & Indie games, Games On Demand or disc games, plus Netflix, Facebook & Twitter.

Then I came across something pretty cool. I know we don't talk much about homebrew apps, but Team Blackbolt, responsible for the Xbox 360 blades skin for XBMC, is now planning on releasing their beta for their new Xperience UI this weekend...

Microsoft needs to take some lessons from these guys. :)

That's really cool. It's the reason I still keep my modded Xbox around which for me is by far the best media player I have. Too bad it not able to do HD vids.

Now if I can find a work around so that I can stream Netflix vids--U.S. territories are locked out atm.

Also having to sign in to Live to watch avi movies is retarded as well--I recently was in Arizona without access to Live and could not view movies saved to an external HDD. While they're at it, add support for more formats (.mkv, .mov, etc)

You need to create a silver account and redownload the optional media update. The update is tied to the console and when you have to get it repaired, they usually send you a different system. You then need to be logged on to live to verify the license. When you redownload it on another dummy account it ties it to your new console again.

Thanks.

I never thought of doing that.

Not everyone wants its for free. I like all the content on there and all the updates. If being free has to knock it down a few levels to what sony is currently offering I am very happy to pay $3 a month for live.

I just feel like you should get more for the fee you pay...like dedicated servers for one thing.

Can you get dedicated servers for $4/mo (~US cost of Live Gold)?

Honest question, as I really don't know. Seems like guaranteed dedicated servers would cost a lot more than what they charge for a Gold membership.

You can get slots on ded servers for that; getting a server can be pretty cheap actually. A group of 20 could easily get a ded server -- the catch being that how often would all 20 be online at a time? Based on my Live list the peak is a very small percentage so you could (just like how we calc bandwidth utilization) go off a percentage of peak. So you may have 1 server per 100 users because you may never peak above 30.

Anyhow, another lame thing about Live: We setup a FM3 user for my son so he could have his own cars, paint jobs, etc -- but he cannot buy stuff from the storefont a he needs live. Lame.

How's that lame? Over-reaching a bit?

Have you created a parental control gametag? And did you allow your son gamertag to see others user's content? Don't remember when you're silver that you can't access to user's contents, but may be.

I'd like...

- Consistenly being able to bring in the silver membership profiles on my Xbox to an online game if one profile is a gold account. If I have people at my house and want to play Death Tank online then I should only need a single gold account. It was possible with Halo 2 if I remember correctly but with the introduction of the 360 it wasn't possible any more
- Uploading of save games to a server and access of my profile from any console (why do you people talk about clouds?)
- MUCH faster response times when browsing. Actually being online shouldn't have any impact at all when navigating menues.
- Search function for Live-content (PS3 has it)
- The option to download films in the original language (in Germany all movies are dubbed in German which is horrible)
- Slash all film-renting prices to a half of what they are now (in Europe). I thought online-distribution saves publishers a lot of costs. Why do I have to pay double the price of renting a packaged version of the movie? In certain days it's cheaper to go to the cinema than renting a movie from their Zune service. This is ridiculous
- Elimination of all advertisements on the main screen of the dashboard. If my 360 is connected and I turn it on, it defaults to a row full of advertisements. Then there are another two rows full of advertisements and I have to look around to find basic functions like starting a game and playing music. On the PS3 there is a single column devoted to the playstation store. The whole rest is about telling your console what to do. On the 360 there is a single row for doing stuff with the console. The whole rest tries to sell you something. I also don't care about facebook and twitter. How do I make it go away?

BBC iPlayer!

And also free sharing of UGC. They should allow communication of savefiles with the pc and allow users to share files via PC. Makes life much easier.

addendum:
Indie Games....there needs to be a better system...Having to input my parental code every time my son wants to play avatar golf is crazy...especially since I had to input my code to purchase it. Also, the need to be on Live to play Indie is ridiculous.

This might be a little, umm... Harsh? And I don't mean to pick you specifically, Nav, but aren't we a little better than just a bunch of list collectors?

Take your desired improvement above: What would be the reasoning for having to input your parental code each time to play an Indie game? It's an annoyance, but they didn't do it irritate you to stop buying Live and go play on the PS3 for free. I'm sure it's part of their parental security controls - controls that you requested when you took advantage of them.

Point being, if they didn't force you to input your parental code when your son wants to play avatar golf, what else would they be giving him access to do without your code that you set up the restriction to prevent?
