Is COH interesting from a pvp perspective? Is it ffa pvp? It's one of the few mmos I haven't tried... That and eve. I'd like to try eve but I'm not sure about the setting and combat mechanics... I'd love it to be an Xwing type mmo game, but I'm sure it's not like that at all...
The game I think is going to really make me an addict will be the new Star Wars mmo from bioware...
I know nothing of it, but I know Bio, and it's Star Wars. What can go wrong
PvP in Eve is...different. Likewise the game is...different.
Character progression is entirely time based. There is no such thing as experience points or advancement points or whatnot. There is only skill points that you gain by training skills. Training skills takes time. Attributes reduce training time and have no other effect. (IE - Intelligence doesn't do anything other than reduce the training time for intelligence based skills) And some skills reduce training time by raising your abilities.
So the entire game is all about finding good equipment fits for ships that you fly to maximize your type of playstyle.
It's the ONLY MMO with a viable player run economy. Due mainly to the fact that items do get destroyed. If you die for example approximately half of the equipment you had on the ship is gone forever, the other half is still there on the wreck. You can retreive it, or if you're in PvP, chances are someone just got some loot.
Space combat isn't X-wings or flight sim style. You don't command fighter craft but rather ships that have crews of more than one person. From something as relatively small as a Frigate (crew probably number in the 10's) to something as large as a Titan or Mothership (crew probably number in the thousands). So everything is 3rd person with a point and click aspect.
You can be anything you want in the game. If you want to be a good crafter you can be a good crafter (could take literally years of RL time to become one of the top crafters). Likewise if you wanted to be a trader. Or a long haul "space trucker." Or a miner. Or covert ops (stealth exploration and infiltration). Or an E-war (electronics warfare) specialist. Or a interceptor. Or a plain old combat junky, or anything else.
There are a few things to note though.
1. Some worked out that if you wanted to train every single skill in the game to max. It would take you over 25 years.
It pays to specialize.
2. Due to skilling up in the game being entirely time based, you can be as hardcore as you want or as casual as you want. In the end only money will limit what you can do if you're an ultra casual player. Even casual players should easily be able to afford anything they've trained a skill for. Although it may be hard to replace blown up ships and equipment in PvP.
3. Equipment is everything. But you can do pretty much everything with basic equipment that is cheap and easy to attain. Better equipment can give you an edge but is also more expensive (Tech II) or rare (faction/named). And can be painful to lose if you die. For example Navy (faction) Battleships are very nice compared to the regular kind. But they also cost a fortune in Loyalty (faction) points. As such, if someone see's one in PvP, it's likely to get focus fired on.
4. For a space game, the graphics are gorgeous. Although if you use an ATI card you have to turn off HDR for AA. /sigh... And in the MMO world of things, I'd put it just behind AoC and VG in terms of graphics brilliance.
5. The game has a rather STEEP learning curve. You can easily be overwhelmed by the sheer number of skills, ships, ship equipment, etc that are available to you in the game.
6. Bigger =/= Better in this game. Every single ship and every single ship equipment loadout has a counter. A Titan for example has awesome firepower making it the premier choice for taking out other Titan's, Motherships, or Starbases. However, it's tracking speed is so slow (due to useing super large capital sized weapons) that it has no chance in heck of hitting a Frigate or Cruiser. Has a hard if not impossible time hitting even Battleships.
7. Which boils down to. Most of the real PvP involves using fleets with a mix of ships that support each other. If you are flying a Titan or a Dreadnaught (other than possibly a Moros) then you NEED to have other smaller ships to protect you from other smaller ships.
8. And finally. One versus One PvP is very rare. If you go into low sec (no empire police to punish bad behavior) be prepared to run into gangs more often than you will run into a loner or small gang (fleet).
