What are you playing now? [2007-2018]

After that, I got into Everquest II. I really got into that one hard, and even managed to be an officer in one of the two best guilds on the server (we claimed ours was best, of course, but I'm sure so did they...they tended to get more disputed kills, but we got nearly all of the server firsts, at least when I was with them). Well, I got really pissed off at one of the leaders of the guild, pissed off enough that I just didn't want to play anywhere near those players ever again. So I just stopped playing. And I experienced a bit of schadenfreude a little bit later as I noticed that my guild had disbanded within months of my departure. I'm sure my departure didn't have anything to do with it, but I am wondering what the cause was.

Same here. While Dark Age of Camelot was my first MMO, I was out of it by fall of 2002 and only briefly tried Asheron's Call 2 before EQ2 was released. At one point I was so enthralled with EQ2 I remember thinking to myself that I'd never stop playing. My addiction lasted, somewhat sporadically, for roughly a year, maybe a little longer, and then I was done with the game. And then Lord of the Rings Online came out almost two years ago and made my EQ2 addiction look like a mild fondness for salting my pizza. Two characters maxed out, full radiance armor sets (current best in game), a third only 5 levels shy of the cap, a 4th at level 48, and two more toons in their mid-20s. I refuse to type /played in the game, I don't want to know the hours I've spent at night once the wife and kids are in bed.

Yeah, but unless things have changed dramatically, SOs cost around 1mil inf at level 22. And, again, maybe my numbers are old, but SOs at that level will better than IOs in effectiveness (not that I expect a level 22 to be able to afford a bunch of sets).
Well, the nice thing about the market system now is that it's pretty easy to get that amount of cash through selling salvage and recipes. And as for IO's, those are much more expensive, and thus largely reserved for people who are building a character specifically for exemplaring to a particular level (e.g. a person who makes a character build specifically for doing the Positron task force over and over).

I think now lowbies can have temporary travel powers?
Yes, as a result of safeguard/mayhem missions, you get temporary travel powers starting as early as level 6. They definitely help.

But it used to be that CoH was an incredibly slow-starting game (CoV was far better that way).
Eh, I can hit level 14 in about a day of hard playing. They redid the level rewards so it's much smoother at all levels. Plus there's no longer a problem of running out of missions to complete (rather there's a problem of there being too many at most levels...if you consider that a problem...).

Of course, as you level up it actually becomes easier to rebuy your enhancements (at least if you're not in an SG) and by 40 or so you have more money than you need (well, more money than you needed pre-issue 9. no idea how bad inflation's been, if it's been a problem at all.).
Well, you easily get more money than you need if you stick to single origins. But if you go for IO sets, well, it can take hundreds of millions to fill out a character.

And by the way, even at level 22, it can be good to get IO's because they don't decrease in effectiveness with level. So you can just hold on to them for 20+ levels to save cash for the really expensive sets at higher levels.

I seem to remember, though, that at 22 IOs were something like a 26% boost, while at 30 they sort of level out at about an even-level SO, around 33%. It's a fairly big difference, especially with how you're so slot-limited early on.

Is COH interesting from a pvp perspective? Is it ffa pvp? It's one of the few mmos I haven't tried... That and eve. I'd like to try eve but I'm not sure about the setting and combat mechanics... I'd love it to be an Xwing type mmo game, but I'm sure it's not like that at all...

The game I think is going to really make me an addict will be the new Star Wars mmo from bioware...
I know nothing of it, but I know Bio, and it's Star Wars. What can go wrong :)

PvP in Eve is...different. Likewise the game is...different.

Character progression is entirely time based. There is no such thing as experience points or advancement points or whatnot. There is only skill points that you gain by training skills. Training skills takes time. Attributes reduce training time and have no other effect. (IE - Intelligence doesn't do anything other than reduce the training time for intelligence based skills) And some skills reduce training time by raising your abilities.

So the entire game is all about finding good equipment fits for ships that you fly to maximize your type of playstyle.

It's the ONLY MMO with a viable player run economy. Due mainly to the fact that items do get destroyed. If you die for example approximately half of the equipment you had on the ship is gone forever, the other half is still there on the wreck. You can retreive it, or if you're in PvP, chances are someone just got some loot.

Space combat isn't X-wings or flight sim style. You don't command fighter craft but rather ships that have crews of more than one person. From something as relatively small as a Frigate (crew probably number in the 10's) to something as large as a Titan or Mothership (crew probably number in the thousands). So everything is 3rd person with a point and click aspect.

You can be anything you want in the game. If you want to be a good crafter you can be a good crafter (could take literally years of RL time to become one of the top crafters). Likewise if you wanted to be a trader. Or a long haul "space trucker." Or a miner. Or covert ops (stealth exploration and infiltration). Or an E-war (electronics warfare) specialist. Or a interceptor. Or a plain old combat junky, or anything else.

There are a few things to note though.

1. Some worked out that if you wanted to train every single skill in the game to max. It would take you over 25 years. :p It pays to specialize. :)

2. Due to skilling up in the game being entirely time based, you can be as hardcore as you want or as casual as you want. In the end only money will limit what you can do if you're an ultra casual player. Even casual players should easily be able to afford anything they've trained a skill for. Although it may be hard to replace blown up ships and equipment in PvP.

3. Equipment is everything. But you can do pretty much everything with basic equipment that is cheap and easy to attain. Better equipment can give you an edge but is also more expensive (Tech II) or rare (faction/named). And can be painful to lose if you die. For example Navy (faction) Battleships are very nice compared to the regular kind. But they also cost a fortune in Loyalty (faction) points. As such, if someone see's one in PvP, it's likely to get focus fired on. :D

4. For a space game, the graphics are gorgeous. Although if you use an ATI card you have to turn off HDR for AA. /sigh... And in the MMO world of things, I'd put it just behind AoC and VG in terms of graphics brilliance.

5. The game has a rather STEEP learning curve. You can easily be overwhelmed by the sheer number of skills, ships, ship equipment, etc that are available to you in the game.

6. Bigger =/= Better in this game. Every single ship and every single ship equipment loadout has a counter. A Titan for example has awesome firepower making it the premier choice for taking out other Titan's, Motherships, or Starbases. However, it's tracking speed is so slow (due to useing super large capital sized weapons) that it has no chance in heck of hitting a Frigate or Cruiser. Has a hard if not impossible time hitting even Battleships.

7. Which boils down to. Most of the real PvP involves using fleets with a mix of ships that support each other. If you are flying a Titan or a Dreadnaught (other than possibly a Moros) then you NEED to have other smaller ships to protect you from other smaller ships. :p

8. And finally. One versus One PvP is very rare. If you go into low sec (no empire police to punish bad behavior) be prepared to run into gangs more often than you will run into a loner or small gang (fleet).

SB

Actually, level 25 IO's are 32%. By contrast, equal-level SO's are 33.3%, and level +3 SO's are 38.3%.

So a level 25 IO will be worse up to level 25, but better at level 26-27. And since they're good enough to get into the diminishing returns stage, as long as you've got three slots into one power or another, there's almost no drawback.

But really, this is a minor point.

Thanx for all the answers guys.
I might give Coh a try somewere down the road, but I think eve is not for me... After all those years without a new wing comander or an xwing, all I'm thinking when I see new games with spaceships is the fact that it won't play with a joystick...

On a side note, does anyone remember the multiplayer of the original Jedi Knight? Aoc reminds of that... As wierd as it sounds. :) It's like a complex action game with powers...

System Shock 2. I bought this game a little more than a year and a half ago but at the time I had XP and could never get it to run - well, I did after a while but I could never get the videos to work so I just gave up all together after a short time. I recently decided to install it on my new rig/Vista and to my surprise it ran without trouble (didn't even have to disable any cores). I also installed the ddfix patch (fixes the dithering problems), the widescreen patch, SHTUP, and the rebirth mod. I even got the vids to work by registering the codec. So far, so good. I'm just loving the atmosphere of this game and the outdated graphics don't bother me one bit.

BTW - there's user made updated patches to greatly increase graphics detail of both the environment and the NPCs/monsters.

Don't remember the website offhand to get them, but if you're interested I could dig 'em up. Looks quite nice with the updated graphics.

You mean there're other ones besides REbirth and SHTUP? I'd definitely be interested if you could dig up a link - Thanks in advance :)

Well, Book 7 came out yesterday and took the proverbial meat sword to the dps classes. My level 49 captain now burns through mobs faster than my 60 hunter (a pure dps class). Way to go, Turbine.

Hey guys, I just installed Witcher the Enhanced Edition. I was wondering what the latest patch was. The game says I have 1.4.5.1280 installed but when I click check for updates it takes me to the Witcher website and says to download 1.4 lol which makes it seem like I indeed do have the latest patch already?

I'm not sure. I updated from the original game to the Enhanced Edition, and my game version is 1.4.5.1282. This may only reflect a difference in whether the game was installed from the Enhanced Edition straight away vs. upgraded from the original retail product. I don't know if the 900MB patch available at that site even upgrades a game from 1.4.5.1280.

I found this site:

Looks like you are right. If you download the patch from the website instead of the pressed DVDs like I did for the enhanced edition, then it seems the version numbers are going to be slightly off despite the content being the same. I also am experiencing a game crash if I try to enable EAX. Looks like for that there is another 106 MB patch. So I am downloading that at the moment and seeing if that helps me out any.

I guess gone are the days when one popped in a cd/dvd installed the game and just expected it to work. I guess games are just so complicated nowadays that to get the maximum experience the end user must be willing to sacrifice some time and effort to trudge around on the interwebs and find their solutions to their problems.
