Played and finished You Are Empty last week. For me, that was a 10/10 game, I loved every bit of it. People were bitching about the crappy visuals, they were damn sexy to me (in fact, in some areas they appeared to include far too many polys on objects, like buildings, so things ran a lot worse than they should but looked incredibly nice). Music was eery, depressing and scary all at the same time. Enemies were mostly funny to look at, and deceptively difficult when needed, also very good at hiding.
But the one thing that really does stand out is the visuals. Some places just seem so stunningly realistic and beautifull, the abandoned, dead inner city areas especially so. They also used a lot of excellent textures on everything too. Another thing I found was that I loved every single level. At no point was I going "Oh when is this stupid level going to end" or anything, I was just having a blast running through it. It's essentially a serious Serious Sam
I was checking out some of the game data and found references to things that obviously didn't make it into the final game, such as HDR
There's a developer mode too that i'd like to access, but haven't figured out how.
I haven't really done the game justice in my post here, and i've left out lots more positive things, but regardless, I absolutely loved You Are Empty. A gritty, 'realistic', stylish and fun game.
*edit* I was just thinking on it for a moment. What YAE reminds me most of is Half Life 2. The visuals aren't technically astounding, but the art direction and attention to detail really bring everything to life and make it all look stunning. The storyline is also deep and well thought out, but extremely hard to understand and get into for most. But yes, now that I think about it, I would definitely compare the style and design of the game to that of HL2... The way you crawl through the 'wastelands', construction areas, into the city then out and onto a train to a gigantic monolithic tower for the 'final showdown' is all very HL2, but in a good way.
