Water tech *spawn

It's a shame that Naughty Dog couldn't use their advanced water effect they had made while developing the first Uncharted. Hopefully in Ucharted 3 they can finally implement it.

They showed it in their U1 post mortem presentation at GDC: http://www.gametrailers.com/user-movie/uncharted-gdc-post-mortem/180700 (the water is shown at 38 seconds in).

yeah, I hope this too!!
Would be really great to fight with Drake in rather deep water, with the water making him slow!! Would be great gameplay if you ask me, some mix up of the usuall run around gameplay!!

Is probably becouse it has reflections for pretty much all water surfaces which few games and they are not Crysis nor U2. Both those lack in parts or use cubemaps to fake reflections (Crysis only ocean has full reflections, limited for rivers). Funny becouse Far Cry 1 had reflections on all water surfaces and reflected everything.

EDIT: Anyway if for Warhead you're talking about the tunnel or cave then it has distortion for sub surface objects/terrain. Just enable the flashlight or shot down the roof lights and pick them up and use em as flashlights to see! ^^

Anyway I find Anno1404 to have more impressive water than Crysis and others not just becouse it is highly detailed deformable 3D water mesh far into horisontbeing physics based with refractions, HQ shader effects, very high res reflections, sub surface rendering with caustics and more. Impressed me a lot. I actually have a dev video about their water implementation. ^^

That's nice! Does it react like the water in Super Rub-a-Dub?

I totally agree! I have never seen in-game water like that before! How is that possible?

The link was removed. Here is the Gametrailers link.

Indeed, and not just the water "looks very 3d maybe a fluid dynamic system?" the particle effect seemed have improved a ten fold both in volume and clarity. The lighting also looked brighter than before, HDR perhaps? The AO looked good also:).

Its shaping up rather well! The snow setting makes a welcome break from the decayed urban\dessert settings of KZ2. Hopefully they'll be returning to the Jungle type sections like they had in KZ1, that was one of the best sections. Well that and the beach landing bit.

The water almost looks like it'll be inducing seas sickness in 3D!

Yeah, I thought the same about the water!! I almost wanted to start chanting a seafarer song!

Looks quite standard as you have the water mesh and the surface is 2 or more texture layers intersecting each other like for example in BF game. But then it lacks transparency, refractions and reflections.

Hm, I thought that such things depend heavily on the view angle and of course on the surface of the water...if it is like this water is very wild and moving with spray's and all...

Just compare this pic:

(which is by the way very funny!)
This does not seem to show much reflections at all and it does not seem to be transparent.

Here a small gif of the trailer:

I am not sure, but if seems to me that this gif shows some reflections and some transparency??

The object is dark and reflection and shadow is being cast towards camera postion and mostly missed by camera lens due to angle. Even if conditions are not optimum you would still get a very dark reflection if sun is out or fullmoon.

Also it is different about transparency with a dark object with "thin" support poles in deep water compared to white ice blocks acting as walls where water intersects.

Looks like some shiny effect on water surface but not reflections nor transparency.

I have never really fully understood the fascination with water tech. :)

I agree they can look cool, but I have always wondered more about what's in the water.

The R2 water is interesting to me because of those &%*$&%$*( armadillo-scorpions that charge at you in shallow water. They are partially hidden by murky water. When you see incoming ripples with scorpion tails, you see troubles coming. Next time, they should make it deep enough so that only the disturbed water and ripples are showing (but no obvious tail). It'd be more scary.

The God of War 3 River Styx is interesting because of the hidden treasure at the bottom, and the swimming nymphs (?).

The R2, Lair, and GoW3 oceans are fun because they all have Krakens (or super-size sea serpents) to fight. ^_^

The KZ3 one may disappoint unless it's interactive or have hidden surprises. May be some visual effects like the windscreen water in the F1 racing game ? Or fogging up our vision because of the extreme low temperature ? Or Animal Inside(TM) ?

EDIT: It needs something to remind us that this is not Earth. The water doesn't have to be of the "right" color too.

Looks like it's still using LDR. No SSAO either, seems to have more jaggies than KZ2 (so I doubt MLAA is being used), and the water certainly isn's the best. That title still belongs to Resistance 2's.

Also, those "real water" videos posted above aren't a fitting comparison, considering the difference in lighting conditions (stormy vs sunny).

The weather is not sunny, it is snowy in KZ3 trailer. The comparison is perfectly valid. For Jaggies, I agree. For SSAO, I don't know, I prefer watch gameplay sequences.
