Warner Exclusive Blu-ray= More PS3 sold?

In that respect it looks like BRD inclusion has been vindicated. Sony used PS3 to establish the format and it worked. The financial success of PS3 has to be considered with respect to the financial success of BRD now, as if the net gains for Sony are beyond what a DVD based console could get (say comparable to PS2's success) then any losses in the console space are still a plus for the company as a whole. A lot now depends on whether the masses adopt HD or stick with DVD.

Considering things like netflix, blockbuster, Video Ave. Hollywood video, and dvd decrypting software freely available. Dual Layer dvds prices, the last bastion as most movies tried going DL to mitigate copying, is also coming down in price as all media is. Hollywood studios will try to FORCE a move as soon as possible, I think dvd sales are also going down, iirc, possibly as a result of rampant and ever increasing piracy.

Stronger DRM, and larger sizes to impede copying and distribution and thus piracy, are strongly desired by hollywood.

One of the things that drove DVD Disc sales was catalog titles being reissued. With 83.000 titles out in R1 i would guess that the catalog titles are done :)

Now it´s off to Hi Def and a rerun :)

Since Xbox 360 has only 16MB of flash storage which is smaller than PSP's (32MB), a memory card or HDD may be required for a player software if MS choose to release a Blu-ray addon. Also they can't wipe out the obsolete part in the flash even after HD DVD's life.
If they can do it for HD DVD, why not BRD? They could even embedded player software in the external BRD drive.

Even though they could, don't you think it can be a problem if 360 tries to add more platform features throughout its life cycle? I searched for a teardown analysis of a BD player but couldn't find one, so searched firmware download instead.

Panasonic DMP-BD10: 22MB

Panasonic DMP-BD30: 29MB

Sony BDP-S1: 51.93MB

Sony BDP-S300: 52.24MB
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=BDPS300

and these are compressed. 360 can reuse H.264/MPEG2/VC-1 decoder in its firmware, but I doubt it's a large part in these firmwares.

As for putting a software stack in the add-on firmware, such a special drive may not be exactly cheap, looking at the DVD drive in 360...

The HD-DVD drive for the 360 apparently did a neat trick. When you connect it to a PC it comes up as a 360 HD-DVD drive and a 360 HD-DVD memory unit. So i guess they solved the problem with 128MB local storage by providing the drive with static memory and maybe even kept the actual player software on the drive as well. It shouldn´t be a problem for them to do the same on a Blu-Ray drive.

Thanks, now it makes sense that the flash in the console is relatively small. It also makes the flash in the console clean as opposed to my earlier assumption.

Here's something from the grapevine...
http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Gaming/Console/J7L7H2R4

Insiders at Microsoft in the USA have told SmartHouse that Microsoft has already configured a standalone Blu-ray player that can be connected into an Xbox 360 and that subject to internal marketing and sales approvals the model could be on sale within 3 months.

Michael Ephraim the Managing Director of Sony Computer Entertainment said: "We would welcome Microsoft to the Blu-ray stable. In fact it is quite logical for them as the PS3 has been very succesful in driving consumers to Blu-ray. In fact we believe that it has done more to win the format war than traditional Blu-ray player".

Let's see what profile they intend to push ;-)

If MS comes out with a Blu-Ray add-on, that's an admission that Blu-Ray is helping PS3 sales.

That would be the only reason to do it, because MS would have to eat a very large crow to accept BDJ and BD+, both of which they trashed savagely.

There are stories that the Toshiba board is meeting on Tuesday to possibly make a formal decision to withdraw out of the HD-DVD business.

A couple of Japanese securities analysts have upgraded Toshiba on that prospect, because getting out of HD-DVD would reduce their losses.

That suggests hardware subsidization.

Yes. The real question is how far does MS intend to support Blu-ray if/once it takes a step in that direction. The HD DVD add-on did not rank high amongst HD people, let's hope they do a better job in the Blu-ray add-on.

Even then, I don't think SCE is counting on Blu-ray to win the console war for them. This year, I think the focus will be on network services and software.

The price of this add on is going to be interesting...
I mean if MS has PRO 349$ + Blu-ray add on 149-199$ it might look a bit silly compared to 399$ 40GB PS3.

MS needs to do something about that very soon, and I quess they will.

On the other side, of the two most advanced consoles only one could claim to be truely Hi-Def, this of course all in a PR sense. If i were Microsoft i would eat the crow and sell the drive at a price were i would make money. They wouldn´t loose money and they would help hammer the point home that HD-DVD was the cheaper format.

I doubt it. They will never be able to compete at price there, so I think what they will do instead is point out that a lot of people don't need the BluRay add-on, so for those that don't want it the 360 is the cheaper gaming platform. But those that do want it, still have that option to make the 360 the 'complete' multimedia device. Driving home again that whole 'choice' thing with which they also sold the HD DVD drive add-on.

It's over. Blu-Ray wins. Toshiba can grasp all the straws they want, but the bottom line is that there are just too many PS3s out there.

Blu-Ray didn't really help the PS3 all that much so far, but the PS3 certainly helped Blu-Ray. Now that Blu-Ray has won, it might help PS3 as well.

Read: "We still wanna sell the stuff we already produced"

As I said ..."yet". For a forum of people that are so good at reading into what isn't there, many of you are terrible of reading into what is actually there in front of you. It gets pretty annoying sometimes.

Cant find the link now, but I read some report which stated that Toshiba already canceled work on new hardware.
1) Its over (but I dint said that in my previous post), even Toshiba knows.
2) Other than that I dont know what are you refering to, might be that you are reading into something that aint there?
